Measurement Day 3

The students are learning to measure objects using centimeters. They previously measured with non-standard units. Now the teacher will demonstrate how to use a ruler to measure in centimeters, pointing out the centimeter side and 0 mark. The students will then practice measuring their books, crayons, and name cards with rulers, recording the measurements. Finally, they will write one thing they learned about measuring. Their work will be assessed formatively through their graphic organizers.

I can identify the cm side of the ruler.

I can start at 0 when measuring.

I can use my ruler to measure things around me.

*demonstrate how to find the cm side of the ruler*

*point out the 0 on the ruler*
It is very important to start at 0 when you measure because otherwise you will get a bigger
number than the actual size of your object.
*demonstrate how to measure with cm*
Im going to read you a special book. The pictures in this book are the actual size of the
animals they show.

Activity:

*demonstrate how to find the cm side of the ruler*
*point out the 0 on the ruler*
*demonstrate how to measure with cm*
With the same partner you worked with yesterday, I want you to use your rulers to measure
your busy books, a crayon and a name card, and write your answers on your graphic
organizers.
*observe and assist as the students complete the task

Plenary:

On your graphic organizers, write one thing you learned today about measuring.

Assessment/ Monitoring:

The students graphic organizers will serve as formative assessments of their knowledge.

Why is it important to measure with cm rather than with
something like dice or paper clips?
Where do we start our ruler when we are measuring something?
