MCD Assignment Lesson Plan

This lesson plan is about teaching measurements of length to grade 5 students. The learning intentions are for students to be able to use tools to measure length, estimate lengths in units, and determine differences in measurements with 100% accuracy. The teacher will introduce measurements by reviewing how to use a ruler and recognizing centimeter units. Students will then practice estimating lengths of various objects and measuring to check their estimates. Formative assessment will include an Estimate and Measure worksheet and Measure It! activity. Enrichment activities include measuring objects at home.

Lesson phases
Introduction

To begin this lesson, learners will be seated at their desks and focused on the
teacher providing instructions.
I will ask learners if they know the difference between the two. Explain formal measurement is the use
of units (ie; cm’s, mm’s, etc) and informal is the use of objects and items that may be used to
measure certain areas,perimeters, length, etc.

I will present a ruler to the class. As a class, they will review on their previous knowledge on reading a
ruler and recognizing the units of measurement (CM). It may be necessary to measure a few objects
together as a class to review more on this subject and teach some learners to read the rulers. Have
them viewing their own rulers at their desk during this process.

I will provide the learners with an introduction on estimating and comparing different measurements
as well. Hold up various objects along side the ruler and have learners to estimate how long they
think each one is before measuring and finding out.
Conclusion

I will split the learners into groups of 2-3 and distribute the "What's the Relationship?"
(attached bellow) worksheet to each learner.
• I will have the learners work with their partner or group to complete the worksheet. They
should try not to use they measuring tools, but if they get stuck they can use them to help. If
they finish ahead of time, I will give them out the bonus question.

• I will circulate and observe, offering assistance if needed.

• When most students are finished,I will reconvene as a class and ask volunteers for their
answers, comparing with their classmates, checking for understanding of equivalency
between units.

Assessment

The formative assessment used for this lesson will be the Estimate and Measure worksheet, as
well as, the Measure It! Activity. These will both ensure that the students have understood the
content and that they are progressing correctly.

Enrichment and learner support

Learners should select an object at home to measure in length, weight, capacity, and/or
temperature. Ask them to bring that object in (or draw a picture of or describe the
object) and be prepared to share with the class that object’s length, weight, and/or
capacity.
