Thanks to the Editor for the Maiden edition of your Journal on the article,
ADA PALM. The State government should go back and promote the available
Natural resource the state is known for, that will generate more revenue and
employment for our youths, than hoping on the Federal allocation for the State to
function whereas it has available resource to explore that will be of benefit to the
state, not only (Ada Palm), 1think more of it are available, only waiting to be
explored.

SIX YEAR SINGLE TENURE: To Be Or Not To Be.

On July 15.2011. the Special Adviser to the
preside:-::: media and publicity. Dr. Reuben Abati
in a press statement said that President Goodluck
Jor.atr.ar -

c e re r:: :

: : : a s:r.g.e te rr.::

in the polity in (hot some supported it while some

people swore-at.b not see the fight of the
day.
People
tgpcsed the said fc:il saw Goodluck
Jonathan s proposal as a calculated attempt to
elongate his term. Also, some Nigerians advised
him to jettison his proposition and concentrate
more or. sec::;:,' issue which has affected the
peace arc stability of the nation which is
evidenced in the Boko Haram crisis. In addition
there staunch opponents advised the president to
cor:cerca:e more on the provision of infrastructure
so that development will cut across the hinterlands
adc'.ng that the proposed single term is Jonathan's
gam.-: plan for self succession to say the least.
On the contrary, a large section of the country
praised Goodluck for his good Innovation and
initiative adding that if the single term bid
succeeds, it would reflect on the federal character
principle where all zones will be adequately
represented and the issue of marginalization will
be a thing of the past.
The president in a bid to clarify himself posited
during the 56* meeting of the National executive
council of the P.D.P that the single term proposal
was not his brainchild adding that it was agreed in
an inter-party committee set up by the late
President Umaru Musa Yaf Adua, headed by
Justice Muhammed Uwais committee on electoral
reform where all political parties consented to a
single term with the exception of the Action
Congress of Nigeria, ACN.
The President also added that before the bill sails
through, there must be wide consultations in the
legislative house. Governors and other
stakeholders' views will also be sought. The single
term tenure would not succeed in the sense that
Jonathan has placed his personal interest above

the general will. The president and his fellow

strategists have plans A and B. In their plan A,
if his proposed 6 year single term sails
through, he would be a beneficiary though he
saic he '-wild not -e-contest in 2015. He set a
mac to: himself by proclaiming not to contest
ar.d r.ov mpiored the single term as a remedy
for his utterance. In his plan B, if his 6 year
single term fails, he would re-contest because
he is a bonafide citizen of Nigeria. Also, the
single term bid of the president would spell
disaster for the unity of the country in the
sense that some geo-political zone have seen
the office of the president as their birthright
and an attempt to scuttle it would be a denial
of this birth right.
it would be recalled that during the national
political conference (confab) during the
Obasanjo administration, a single term was
proposed but it was only theorized. Also,
Obasanjo tried to elongate his tenure to a third
term. Even after the lobbying, it couldn't
materialize,
Nigeria is a heterogeneous country with
diverse culture and the issue at stake should
be to improve on security lapses which have
threatened the peace of the country and
scared potential investors with the recurring
bomb blast.
Our leaders lack sincerity which is why this
proposition would not sail through because of
the corrupt nature of politicians and the desire
to amass wealth.
We cannot be fooled by the pro-Jonathan that
the single term bill will cushion the rate of
expenditure among governors and presidents
in the sense that immediately they are elected,
they start seeking re-election on the second
day. In 2006, Jonathan as a governor was an
advocate of tenure elongation but this time,
his political gimmick in place is different.
The President has started lobbying the north
and south east where he will get the stiffest

opposition because the south east

(Ohaneze ndi-igbo) would always
support him as they did in the
previous election and the southsouth his own people would
always give him the necessary
support he so desires.
The Action Congress of Nigeria
ACN has resisted every move by
the president and swore to oppose
this bid (6 year single term)
vehemently But the P.D.P says
that if this bid sails through, it
would be one of the achievements
of the President adding that the
cries of the opposition are just
politics and the president has no
hidden agenda or skeleton in his
cupboard.
Obasanjo's 3rd term bid tried to
cause disunity in the polity and
subsequently paid all who did not
support his bid in a bad coin.
President Goodluck Jonathan
should concentrate more on
running an open door policy and
deliver the dividends of
democracy to the electorate who
voted him massively and
overwhelmingly and refrain from
been distracted by his 6yrs single
term which is for his own personal
aggrandizement and which will
spell disaster for the polity.
Unemployment, insecurity, poor
infrastructure, power shortage etc.
should all be tackled so that
realistically Nigeria would be one
of the leading economies in line
with his vision 20-20-20.
