Division 2 Sitework

Part 1 General
Summary
This section includes the following:

excavating and backfilling of trenches

rough grading to elevations
preparing of subgrade for building slabs, footing and columns
placement of batter boards

Project Conditions
Existing Utilities: Locate existing underground utilities in areas of excavation
work. If utilities are indicated to remain in place, provide adequate means of
support and protection during earthwork operations.
Provide minimum of 3 days notice to architect and receive written notice to
proceed before interrupting any utility.
Use of explosives is not permitted.
Protection of persons and property should be practiced. Barricade open
excavations and post with warning lights.
Protect structures, utilities, sidewalks, pavements and other facilities from
damage caused by settlement, lateral movement, undermining, washout and
other hazards created by earthwork operations.

Part 2 Products
Drainage fill : Evenly graded mix of stone 100% passing a 1 sieve
Backfill and fill: Soil free of clay, rock or gravel larger than 2
Batter boards: 1 thick ledger boards

Part 3 Execution
Building lines and levels
Locate and lay out batter boards for structures, building foundations, column
grids and locations, floor levels and control lines and levels required for
mechanical and electrical work. Set batter 6 beyond all corners and stretch lines
across the location of exterior faces of the walls.

Dewatering
Prevent surface water and subsurface or ground water from flowing into
excavations and flooding, project site and surrounding area.
Do not allow accumulation of water in excavations. Provide pumps, well points,
sumps, suction and discharge lines to convey water away from excavations.

Storage of excavated materials

Stockpile excavated materials acceptable for backfill and fill where directed.
Dispose of excess excavated soil material and materials not suitable for fill and
backfill.

Excavation for structures

Conform to elevations and dimensions shown within a tolerance of 15cm,
extending a sufficient distance from footings and foundations to allow placing and
removal of concrete formworks, installation of services, and other construction
and for inspection.

Trench excavation for pipes and conduit

Excavate trenches to uniform width with a minimum of 25-30cm of clearance on
both sides of pipe or conduit.

Backfill and fill

Place soil material in layers to required subgrade elevations.
Undergrassed areas, use satisfactory soil material.
Under building slabs, use crushed gravel, 15-20mm

Placement and Compaction

When existing ground surface has a density less than 80% standard density,
break up ground surface, pulverize, moisture condition and compact to required
depth and density percentage.
Place backfill and fill materials in layers not more than 18cm in loose depth for
material compacted, and not more than 10cm in loose depth for material
compacted.
Before compaction, moisten each layer as necessary. Do not place backfill or fill
material on muddy surfaces.
Under structures, building slabs and steps and pavements, compact top 25cm of
subgrade and each layer of backfill or fill material at 90% max density.
Under lawn or unpaved areas, compact top 15cm of subgrade and each layer of
backfill and fill material at 80% max density.

Disposal of waste materials

Remove waste materials, including unacceptable excavated material, trash and
debris and dispose of it off owners property.
