Technology
The properties of the ultrathin organic photovoltaic film result in some truly unique product features of
HeliaFilm . The film is ultra-light and flexible and less than 1 mm thin. It keeps its conversion efficiency
in low light conditions and at high temperatures up to 80C. Through modifying the absorber chemistry
different colors can be achieved and even transparent cells are available.
Since many years Heliatek holds the world record in OPV conversion efficiency and numerous awards
demonstrate the long-term validity of the concept and technological approach.
Production
The use of vacuum deposition process allows Heliatek to make
use of the well-established production elements being used
in the OLED industry. This enables Heliatek a robust and stable
ramp-up curve and a well-defined roadmap for scaling up
production capacity. The highly productive roll-to-roll process
in combination with low cost PET substrates yields a huge future
cost saving potential.
Company
Heliatek was spun off in 2006 from the Technical University of Dresden and the University of Ulm. The company
is the established leader in the field of Organic Photovoltaics. Its business model is to supply custom-designed
HeliaFilm to industrial partners in industries as building and construction materials and the automotive sector.
Heliatek maintains a total staff of some 80 specialists at its facilities in Dresden and Ulm, Germany.
Investors in Heliatek include leading industrial and financial companies such as BASF, Bosch, Innogy Venture
Capital GmbH, Wellington Partners, eCapital and AQTON SE. Research and development work, as well as
the installation of production technology, has been funded by the Free State of Saxony, the Federal Ministry
for Education & Research, the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology and the European Union.

Technical features
HeliaFilm Patented multilayer stack architecture
The reasons for Heliateks competitive advantage are the fundamental patents covering the production
of multilayer organic solar cells with doped transport layers. Using this proprietary architecture, it is possible
to absorb a broad solar spectrum, using extremely thin layers. The active layers are only around 250 nm thin.
The manufacturing process is completely free of toxic materials and rare earth elements enabling a
scale-up without any restrictions. In addition, the low power consumption of the production process will
lead to a uniquely short energy payback time of less than 3 months.
