Selfless Living
I became a mother for the first time over nineteen years ago.
I remember being amazed at the
awesome responsibility that was cra-
dled in my arms. When we got home
from the hospital we keep feeling like
someone should come by and check
on us. We were solely responsible for
another human being’s life. If she
ate, it was because we fed her. If she was clean, it was because
we bathed her. If she learned, it was because we taught her.
I remember waking up in the middle of the night with a hun-
gry, crying baby thinking, “I don’t want to wake up. I am sleep-
ing.” My selfishness was beginning to show. I was under the
false assumption that life was all about me. It seemed our new
blessing was determined to make it all about her. Over time,
I came to the reality that being a mother is the hardest thing I
have ever done, but also the most rewarding.
It amazes me that the God of this universe considers us
His children. Our sin separated us from him and he loved us
enough to send his son, Jesus, to die on a cross for those very
sins (John 3:16). It is because of that selflessness that we have
the opportunity to be restored with our Heavenly Father.

and use them. Or, we can continue doing it our way, using our
tools, and the things that should bring beauty to our lives—our
relationships, our jobs, our family, our finances--will continue to
transform into the monsters we dread to face.
