They invite you to pause, and to slow down from the

visual busyness of everyday life. In fact, most of our

visitors linger upon entry, being truly awestruck by the
over 40 works of art currently on exhibit in Nature
Inspired: The Paintings of Sherry Loehr.

Its only natural that the art of Ojai artist Sherry Loehr
has garnered such a profound response from museum
visitors. Loehrs paintings are tranquil and meditative.

Inspiration for the paintings in the exhibition comes

from nature: flowers, fruits, birds, plants. Loehr feels
particularly close to nature in her bright, Craftsman
style studio in Ojai, California. A native of San
Francisco, Sherry studied English at the University of
Colorado and earned an MA in Art Education from

Columbia University. Af ter a successful career as a

ceramicist, Loehr turned to painting on a whim. Her
skills as a painter are largely self-taught, a result of a
technique that she herself describes as trial and
error.
Loehr works primarily in acrylic, and from photographs
of her own carefully arranged compositions than can
include fresh fruits and flowers, bowls and vases, and
folds of fabric. The photographs prove useful as her
organic subject matter does not of ten survive the
painting process. Loehr renders these realist elements
with disciplined precision, reminiscent of the Old
Masters.
Mostly though, Sherry prefers to just let things happen
naturally. Each painting is a conversation between the
artist and her artwork, an energetic exchange that
allows for happy accidents and new discoveries. She

has the most fun in painting the backgrounds. They are

freely improvised, a result of playing with the paint:
lots of layers, textures, and surprises. There are no
rules, boundaries, or preconceptions. The freedom of
the background balances the exactness of the realist
subject.
Every painting is its own adventure for the Ojai artist.
When one work is finished, Loehr is eager to find a
new trail to follow. For Sherry, the ultimate and
unattainable goal is always to create a better
painting. While we cannot imagine how Loehrs work
could be any more stunning, we are grateful to be
able to witness her journey.

Nature Inspired: The Paintings of Sherry Loehr opened in February to great

acclaim. Loehrs work is a striking addition to the Museums Great Hall as it
brings the gallery to an entirely new level of elegance. Not only do our adult
visitors appreciate the exhibition, but our young visitors enjoy it as well with a
customized I Spy game that encourages them to take a closer look at the
artists works. There is also a wonderful video interview with Sherry available
for viewing on our iPads, allowing guests to learn more about the artist in her
own words. If you havent seen the exhibition yet, I invite you to come and be
inspired!

In March, we premiered Building History: The Story of the Museums Home.

Visitors often inquire about the history of the museum building. Was it a bank?
Why is there a vault? What was the brick room used for? We decided it was
time to tell the story of the Limoneira Building. Of particular interest is the section
on the renovation of the building completed in 2009. It includes a fascinating
video interview with architect Doug Nelson, general contractor Chuck Teague,
and general contractor Chris Wilson. We are thankful for their help not only in
returning the building to its original splendor, but also in producing a video
documentary about this important work of architecture.
As we look forward to summer, we are busy preparing for One Look at Nature:
The Paintings of Gail Pidduck to be featured in our Great Hall, and The Art of
Aviation to be featured in the Douglas Shively Gallery. We are honored to
have the opportunity to share Pidducks work with our visitors. Gail is one of
Santa Paulas most beloved resident artists, and her art is beautiful beyond
description. The Art of Aviation is a new juried group exhibition created in
collaboration with the Aviation Museum of Santa Paula. Artists have already
begun to embrace the aviation theme during two paint-outs at the Santa Paula
Airport. Dont miss summer at the Museum. Its going to be a lot of fun!
We are proud that the Santa Paula Art Museum, Jeanette Cole Art Center is not
only serving Santa Paula but the entire Santa Clara Valley. As always, please

In just over six years, the Museums permanent art

collection has grown to include over 200 significant
works of art, and our most recent acquisition is yet
another important addition. Fourth Lake by artist
Robert Clunie is a gift from Colonel and Mrs. Howard
Gabbert of Arizona. Mrs. Andrea Teague Gabbert
has deep roots in Santa Paula. She is the daughter of
Milton Teague of the well-known Teague family. It was
Andreas grandfather, Charles Collins Teague, who
commissioned the painting from Robert Clunie in
1947. Clunie was an adventurous artist who lived and
worked in Santa Paula for 25 years beginning in the
early 1920s. Clunie is famous for his paintings of the
Sierra Nevada, and most summers found him at his
campsite at 11,000 feet in upper Big Pine Canyon,
painting feverishly from morning to dusk. This is the first
work by Robert Clunie to enter the Santa Paula Art
Museums permanent collection.

Debbie Brokaw Jackson, one of our newest board members, joined us in 2015,
after moving back to Santa Paula after almost 20 years in Oregon. Now that
she is back home, she provides consulting services to nonprofits and family
businesses, and helps with the family avocado and citrus ranches. She is neither
an artist nor an art collector, so why has she joined the Santa Paula Art Museum
board of directors? The Santa Paula Art Museum is a wonderful celebration of
legacy, art, education, and community, all in a beautiful package. It is much
more than another static art museum. The breadth of programming and the
dedication of the staff and volunteers are amazing. Who wouldnt want to be a
part of that? Debbie looks forward to using her 20 years of experience in
nonprofit management and governance to help SPAM create a vibrant future.

firm of Clunie and Dunkle. When he wasnt painting

on canvas (opposite page), artist Robert Clunie made
his living as a house painter. His plein air paintings
now hang on the walls that he helped to finish.

When the Limoneira Company offered its historic

headquarters for lease to the Santa Paula Art Museum,
it was a perfect pairing. Where better to display works
of art than a building that is itself a work of art?
Building History: The Story of the Museums Home
tells the history of the Limoneira Building through
art, artifacts, original architectural drawings, and
historical photographs. Built in 1924, the local
landmark was commissioned by C.C. Teague, then
president of the Limoneira Company, and the man
credited with revolutionizing the early California citrus
industry. Teague hired well-respected local architect
Roy C. Wilson, Sr. to design the structure.
The show reveals some fun, lesser known facts about
the building. For instance, museum staff were excited
to learn that the wainscoting was stained by the local

Building History also describes how the structure was

transformed from an office space to a museum in
2009. In a wonderful twist of fate, the contractors
leading the renovation, Chuck Teague and Chris
Wilson, were very closely connected to the history of
the building. Teague is the great-grandson of C.C.
Teague. Wilson is the grandson of architect Roy
Wilson, Sr. The goal of the renovation was essentially
to return the building to its original appearance. Ive
jokingly told people that when Limoneira hired my
grandfather to design an office building, he ended up
designing an art museum and passed it off as an office
building, says Wilson.
The exhibition is intended as a tribute to the men and
women who made this place matter: the people who
built it, the individuals who worked here, and those
who made the Museum possible including Yvonne
Babcock, Jake Colborn, Doug Nelson, Chuck
Teague, Chris Wilson, the Limoneira Company, and
countless others .

Our 2016 Fine and Decorative Art Auction was an

enormous success. This years event featured over 60
remarkable items, including 20 works of art that were
auctioned off live by father and son team John and
Jules Eubanks of California Auctioneers. The two
auctioneers entertained a packed audience with their
quick humor. They were assisted by board member
David Schwabauer who provided descriptions of all
of the items up for bid. Highlights of the live auction
included important works by Cornelis Botke, Otto
Heino, Douglas Shively, and many more. Jessie Botkes
Goose and Gate, an early work by the esteemed
artist, brought the auction to an exciting close.

items for the auction, those who purchased items at the
auction, and all of the volunteers who helped at the event. The auction is the Museums biggest event of the year

We are very fortunate to have so many active docents helping

to keep the Museum running smoothly, but one in particular
goes far beyond the call of duty. Since joining us in 2013, Kathy
Good has proven to be an exceptional volunteer in every
respect. Kathy works regularly at the front desk, currently serves
as the Events Chair for the Docent Guild, and she even makes
time to volunteer for our many school tours. At special events
you can always find her helping to set up and clean up, and she
is often one of the last to leave. Kathy is incredibly gracious with
her time. The Museums staff, board, and docents are all truly
amazed by her kindness. We are so thankful for you, Kathy.
Your dedication is what makes this Museum so special.

NEW OPEN STUDIO FOR TEENS

We are excited to debut our new Open Studio Program for
teens in June, which will take place on the first Friday of every
month from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Participating teens will look
closely at artworks, create art, and experience the Museum
behind-the-scenes with other youth ages 13-19 from across
Ventura County.
Workshops will be led by Silvia Huerta, a local professional
artist. Each workshop will focus on a different topic and art
activity. Students may select to participate in one or all of the
workshops offered. Classes are designed just for teens and
present a wide variety of ways to approach art. Students will
focus on a variety of techniques and develop their own personal
style while working side by side with their peers.

own little corner of the world. One Look at Nature, Pidducks much-anticipated solo show, will feature
breathtaking new works, all of which are an honest statement of the artists gratitude for an amazing world.
