Education, Events, and Service Enhance Lisas Liquor Barn

isas Liquor Barn was founded in 1987, and expanded twice most recently in 2011to become the 24,000 square foot super store it is today. It currently showcases one of the largest selections of wine and liquor in New York State. However, Lisas Liquor Barn is more than a storeits an experience. Locally owned for more than 25 years by Lisa Tobin Healey, an alumnus of Brighton High School, the business has skyrocketed because of her commitment to the wine-buying experience. Healey travelled and studied in Europe, and obtained a B.A. degree in literature from Dennison University and a Masters degree in French literature from University of Rochester. For many years, she taught English as a second language to immigrants. But her affinity for foreign language was matched by her love for French wine. She opened Lisas Liquor Barn with the goal of not being the biggest, but the best (and with the greatest customer service). With an emphasis on spaciousness and comfort, and conscious efforts at lowprofile merchandising, a visitor can enjoy artistically breathtaking displays rather than claustrophobic tunnels of wine bottles and the discomfort of edging around other customers in aisles. Outstanding selection, low, low pricing, and superior service fromexpert staff earned Lisas Liquor Barn its reputation as Rochesters finest wine and spirit retailer. But its the passionate people behind the business that make the difference for customers. Shopping at Lisas is a full customercentered, educational experience. The sales staff of over 50 people prides themselves on knowledge. In fact, Patrick Tobin, director, has been enjoying wine for over 50 years. His passion has brought him to the major wine-producing regions from Napa, California to Hammondsport, New York, and from Burgundy in France to Tuscany in Italy. His life-long goal is to further his knowledge of the wine industry from the source. All associates attend product seminars, and even travel the worlds vineyards, most recently in Southern Italy and Sicily, to expand their knowledge. They bring this back to their state-ofthe-art tasting and education room which seats 50 comfortably. Equipped with computer and video technology to enhance the educational experience of tastings, this educational center is a key component of the commitment to research and education. It complements the comprehensive tasting facility, located in the center of the store, which accommodates up to 15 vendors at s time.

Wine and liquor tasting events are both a social and educational activity. Whether its a holiday activity, a wine and food pairing, a seminar or a weekly tasting, the answers and the place to be are all found at Lisas. The free Prestige loyalty cards feature discounts, sales notification, and tasting events, and are a customer favorite. The Prestige card automatically beats Century or Marketview weekly Democrat and Chronicle ads, and offers hundreds of in-store specials on wine, liquor and much more. Besides product knowledge, the staff sees education as a key part of their customer service obligation. Our staff is well trained and ready to meet any customer need, says Leeann Riesenberger, manager. They are equipped to research products and satisfy customer questions. Riesenbergers commitment to customer satisfaction facilitated their meteoric rise as Rochesters fastest growing wine and spirits store. She has traveled extensively and her love of Italian wine coincides with her management experience. All the wines are vintagetracked to ensure freshness. With the variety and selection available, staff need to be able to help people find the wine of their choice, whether they seek a $3.99 or $699.99 bottle. Staff are trained to be efficient, and accommodate customer needs whether they be product-related or a need for carry-out. Their research and knowledge knows no bounds-or boundaries. Jonathan DEttore, assistant store manager, is tasked with bringing in the freshest wines that people have yet to discover, while maintaining the vast selection our customers have come to enjoy. DEttore has travelled to Argentina, Chile, Italy, and California on quests to find delicious wines for reasonable prices. Ernesto Pescosolido, Italian wine specialist, was born and raised in the Lazio region of Italy and came to America in 1985. Growing up making wine with his grandfather, father, and brother, his passion for wine is embedded in his blood. Pescosolido devotes his time to reading and learning about the more than 3,000 Italian grape varietals to help select the best quality wines available. So when you ask for a recommendation, they take that request seriously. Looking for something to do? Make sure you put their tastings and special events on your calendar. Whether youre planning a formal dinner menu or purchasing a gift, allow Lisas trained experts to advise you. Whatever your plans, put Lisas Liquor Barn at the top of your list. Youll find the perfect complement for any event.

New Wasabi
New Wasabi restaurant located at 2186 Empire Blvd. is a fairly new restaurant and opened their doors in December 2011. It replaces the old Asian Buffet that closed last summer.

ew Wasabi is a sushi, tempura, and hibachi restaurant. It features all you can eat sushi bar, seafood, grilled steak, beef, vegetables, chicken, hibachi, tempura, and many other great dishes. The dining room floor plan is entirely open, and the walls uncluttered, reflecting traditional Japanese design. There are some tables and booths along the walls, but most of the seating is right out in the middle of the expansive dining floor. The large sushi bar, located at the far side of the restaurant, is where all the action really takes place. Iting, the restaurant

manager, says that presentation is a very important facet of the dining experience. Every meal is made fresh to order, so the restaurants sushi chefs are very busy. Diners can sit at the sushi bar and watch their meal being prepared, or sit in the dining room and have it brought out. New Wasabis claim to fame is its all-you-can-eat sushi option. Items can also be ordered la carte, and the menu also features some Chinese and hibachi selections. They are open seven days a week.

A Whole Lot of Bar-B-Q!

exas Bar-B-Q Joint is a family-owned business born from family dinners. Owner Richard Mogab was born in Rochester but grew up in Houston, Texas, where the familys dinner conversation often centered around: We should open a BBQ restaurant in New York! After graduating from Texas A & M University in 1999, he returned to Rochester and worked as a paramedic. But after he began catering in 2004, the family dinner joke became reality when the Texas-style BBQ and reputation for great food caught on. Eventually, his parents, Gina and Richard, moved back, and together they opened the restaurant alongside the successful catering business. Catering weddings, graduations, and company picnics remain a large part of the business, but the restaurant has also taken off since its 2007 opening. Mogab describes his restaurant as a hole in the wall with a whole lot of taste! The restaurant embodies a casual, easy-going environment with southern features. The focus is on the food. And what a selection of food it is! The Mesquite wood used for the slow-smoked BBQ is imported from Texas, and the emphasis is placed on the flavor of the slow-cooked meats rather than heavy sauces. The beef brisket, smoked for 12 hours, is one of

their signature dishes that cant be found anywhere else. Of course, everythings bigger in Texas-and if you dont believe it, order the Outlaw potato and full rack of ribs! The customerfamous Outlaw potato is a full pound of baked potato loaded with butter, sour cream, cheese, bacon, chives and topped with a huge serving of BBQ pork, beef, or chicken. Authentic fried green tomatoes, fried pickles, cornbread, broccoli-rice-andcheese, and baked beans loaded with bacon and brown sugar are the ideal sides. Originally known as Taste of Texas BBQ, they changed their name to Texas Bar-B-Q Joint once they started bottling sauce for retail sale a year ago so as to avoid brand confusion with a Houston restaurant. The sauce is currently available at Hegedorns in Webster & Zarpentine Farms in Hilton, as well as in the Spencerport restaurant. With its mouth-watering menu, Texas Bar-B-Q Joint prides itself on being the best BBQ Restaurant in the Rochester area. Experience the true taste of Texas with slow-cooked pulled pork, beef brisket, ribs, smoked turkey and chicken. If youre looking for a casual, comfortable family environment with terrific food, this is the place!

The Johnson House

he Naughtons Johnson House fine-dining restaurant opened in the 1940s in Churchville, New York. The Johnson House has been successfully managed by owner Peggy Naughton since mid December in 1977. Peggy and her late husband Mike bought The Johnson House without any initial plan, but saw it as an opportunity they could not refuse. Mike and Peggy believed this would play a major role in helping them instill hard work and success into their eight children. Their children and grandchildren have, and continue to, contribute to The Naughton Family the success of the restaurant. In fact, they have also gone on to become successful in their own right. The structure of The Johnson House is still in the same setting as it was when it was originally built 127 years ago. Very little has been changed about the building, other than the north wing. Peggy has a Pianist at the Baby Grand every Friday and Saturday to play various pieces of musical art. The combination of soft music, dim lighting, and antique decor creates a calm and intimate atmosphere for families to come and enjoy their meal together. Speaking of meals! The Johnson Houses specialties are on the steak and seafood menus, including entrees such as: Filet Mignon, New York Strip, steamed clams, shrimp, and lobster tails. You will not forget to remember what the rest of their menu has to offer. Carrying an assorted amount of entrees, the restaurant has plenty of dishes that will definitely capture your taste buds. For example, the Chateau Briand is a succulent, juicy, prime steak, a dish for two; if you think you are willing to share! The Frog Legs are another popular item, cooked to perfection to offer the most delectable taste. People from everywhere make reservations just to have a chance to try these two unique dishes that are difficult to find anywhere else. Some may argue that finding family style type welcoming customer service is not easy to come by today; but not at The Naughtons Johnson House! Anyone who sets foot past the door is treated with top-notch customer service. Peggy visits from table to table sparking conversation, and making sure your time spent in the restaurant was a phenomenal and impressive experience. If you are thinking about having The Johnson House cater your next special occasion, make sure you book in advance just call Marry Murray the manager at their VIP catering division. The catering is booked for over 300 out of 365 days in a year for parties which are mainly corporate. In addition to full service catering, the Johnson House is perfect for private parties, offering three beautiful private banquet rooms in the upstairs of the building. The Naughtons Johnson House is preparing themselves for their 35th anniversary this December. The plans are still in the making on how they will celebrate, but rumor has it the restaurant may give out prizes, including a grand prize on the last day of celebration. Congratulations to The Naughtons Johnson house on their 35 years of excellence making it one of the finest historic dining establishments in Western New York!

Sound Healing by Global Risings, Inc.

n the beginning, there was the word, and the word was sound. The use of sound energy can be an uplifting and highly effective means for you to experience growth in all areas of your life. A growing number of people have personally experienced magical journeys and private sessions conducted by Global Risings Inc. Each and every encounter has been truly awesome. The people from Global Risings, Inc. take you on a journey filled with music and sound. Musician guides will help you travel a path to self-awareness through the use of vibrational music and energy work. Gongs, crystal bowls, tuning forks and more can be used in ceremonies, in medical facilities, homes, schools, meditation sessions, workshops, art events and concerts. Theories abound for the last 6,000 years regarding the mystical properties of gong playing combined with spirituality. Gongs gave been used for thousands of years in the Eastern spiritual traditions. The sound resonates, producing many harmonics from each note which immerse the body in sound. Just like when you meditate and chant the Om sound, the gong tunes your spirit, resonates, and helps you release the negative

energies of stress and daily life. Global Risings uses gongs not just as musical instruments, but also as powerful and versatile healing tools, with the intention of raising your vibration, increasing your energy, and tuning your physical body. Some people enjoy the musical experience; some enter a meditative state, and some experience clearing and realignment. Client Sean Liebel says: When I am being gonged, I feel very relaxed. As a form of sound healing, it works on all levels physical, spiritual, and emotional. When musicians play some people can feel waves of electromagnetic energy pulsate into their physical body, acting as physical and nonphysical sound energy for the nervous system. An authentic three foot Balinese gong is used in this work. A combination of teachings, magical journeys, storytelling, channeling, music, and sound vibrations are offered to open you to your greater self. Musical choices may reflect your heritage, or be a blend of Celtic, New Age, nature, and familiar tunes, all enhanced by the vibrational accent of the gong. Global Risings Inc. uses the gong for energy redirection encouraging positive

changes which in turn. Let them work with you in breaking up any destructive patterns that you may hold. A recent client describes a healing session as a magical, mystical environment filled with nature energy, universal connections, crystal salt lamps, smooth lighting, artistic creations and more all designed to maximize the opportunity for growth.

The people from Global Risings, Inc. take you on a journey filled with music and sound. Musician guides will help you travel a path to self-awareness through the use of vibrational music and energy work.
I was surrounded with a most powerful and unique combination of large gongs, crystal bowls, tuning forks, music and natural sounds all woven together and experienced while atop a raised air mattress. The healing, electromagnetic, and love vibrations produced explosive growth in me. It was new, intense, and profoundly effective. For a deep, moving, and all inclusive experience, check out the people of Global Risings, Inc. A most special and delightful time awaits! Call them at 585-208-2501 e-mail globalrisings@ yahoo.com, or visit their website at www.globalrisings.com.

Austin Wheeler notes that Global Risings helped the connective energy prosper at TEDxFlourCity2012(Listening to the gong music) while receiving the crystal bowl treatment seemingly helped me to organize my spaced out and clouded mental energy by forcing it into the center of myself, whereby it peacefully fell right into place resulting in a noticeable boost in focus, drive and most importantly, confidence. Positive life-giving energy on earth exists in abundance;you just need to seek it out in the right places using the right methods. Inner-energy structures (the mechanics of energy in the mind of a free-willed entity), external energy vibrations travelling along mathematical pathways and the connection between the two are what make life worth living. Wheeler adds, Global Risings has a lot of knowledge about energy identification, manipulation and distribution to share with the world. Consciousness and free-willed life are driven by energy structures and pathways that we as a society do not fully understand yet, so anyone whom is providing a reality-based glimpse or full-path into such is providing a great service to the universe. Such services should be sought after and explored by any willing and able person, free from all legal restrictions. Working with experienced energy healers makes it much easier to find a deeper energy-based connection to life since their guidance teaches us to listen to and flow with the energy that exists in and around us. A client who had a series of private sessions with Global Risings Inc. said Throughout my life, I have always been attracted to the song Summer in the City by The Lovin Spoonful. This song always triggered the same responses of yearning and unfulfilled desires. I felt a need to be anonymous, lose my individuality, and belong to some vaguely greater whole. I felt smothered in heavy, thick sweat with the smells of my own body mixed with those of others. As I felt a gentle push into the night in the summer of the city, I experienced a feeling of more belonging to something, but not yet fully accepted. As the song began, I was immediately transported into times gone by and found myself reliving the energies of old that were once again surrounding me. By adding the sound of the gongs, crystal bowls, tuning forks, bells etc., and applying some of the deprogramming techniques that I had been presented with, I was able to achieve a huge release. As the night of the summer of the city took me further into the depths of selfrealization, I knew that it was me. I am the creator. I am the one along with my unseen friends that were able to then surround me with this Love and allow me to bathe in this most rare and powerful Love the Love of Self and the Love of the whole- the Love of all that is. This Love was an expression of joy, happiness, ecstasy, fulfillment, and more. I was able to own my own power and begin to learn how to consciously create success and learn how to have more fun and how to achieve more clarity. Anonymous

Pittsford
Anais Salibian And The Rosen Method
nais Salibian has been a message therapist since 1981. At the same time as receiving her license as a therapist, she was also a peer counselor. After a while Anais began feeling frustrated because she was unable to address the body and the emotions at the same time. After a long search for effective mind and body modality Anais found the Rosen Method bodywork and movement treatment. She didnt know that her training would get her embodied enough to heal from her own trauma of being the child of Armenian genocide. She became a Certified bodywork practitioner in1996 and has continued training until she became a certified bodywork teacher in 2010. The Rosen Method was created by a women named Marion Rosen who was a physical therapist when she got curious about her patients. Why where they continually returning for treatment due to injuring themselves? Why did others get better and incidentally have other aspects of there lives change? She realized that the patients that she talked to and relaxed where the ones who where healed. That is when she realized that The Rosen Method was a way to access the unconscious through touch. The Rosen Method is called

a psycho-spiritual bodywork because there is no separation between a physical problem, the emotions or memories embedded in it psychotherapy states associated with it, and the opening to and experience of self. Clients come with a variety of presenting problems. Some have physical pains and dysfunctions that doctors can not treat any further because they find nothing wrong or because it isnt their job to deal with the psychosomatic components of their patients complaints. Some people tend to want to work on a specific issue such as recovery from abuse, addictions or eating disorders and are at a stage where body work is appropriate. But, we must keep in mind that the Rosen Method is not for people with serious mental illness or those in acute crisis who need to add structure in there lives and rather loosen it up! Rosen Method Bodywork offers the conditions that allow your body to rewire your nervous system to get out of its old ruts and learn new pathways to the present moment. By becoming conscious of what is going on in your body, you make the connection between body and mind that is physiologically necessary to restore health. You feel pain relief, both physically and emotionally. Your body is more flexible, and so is your thinking. You are better able to make choices in your life that align with your best interests and deeper values Rosen Method includes talking, both as a way to devolve deeper into the clients experience and to process what comes up. Physical and verbal contact are used to establish and respond to changes in the body, specifically changes in breathing patterns and muscle tension. The mind and body are

18

Community and Wellness Guide

so connected that if the client thinks or feels something that is part of the issue loged in the body, the practitioner can feel it with their hands. The Rosen Method also includes touching you silently for a while, feeling a muscle soften or breath enter an area where it wasnt before. The practitioner may give you a gentle verbal marker or ask you what just happened. The Truth immediately translates into a palpable change in the body. Rosen Method is uniquely helpful when other modalities have not addressed how physical, emotional, and even spiritual issues are intertwined. To a Rosen practitioner, there is no difference between a tense muscle, a hidden feeling, and a loss of self. The body and the mind are one. Thats why healing happens on the physical, emotional, and psychological levels at once. Thats why Rosen can make your back pain go away at the same time as you find out who you really are. A Rosen practitioner does not engage in talk that is not connected to changes in tension, expansion of breath, or a sensation of new life coming into the body. The body is a Geiger counter for the truth about what really matters, what is distorting your posture or causing you pain. Beliefs, insight, awareness feelings that can come from talk therapy are limited in their ability to cause actual transformation unless they happen in your body as well aw your brain. The usual format is a 50-60 minute session with the client lying covered on a massage table, having removed as many outer layers of clothing as is comfortable. No oils are used. The touch is gentle, seeking to make contact and support relaxation.

Sometimes buried feelings emerge, insights occur, physical pain eases. Clients often use words such as grounded, expanded, or oceanic to describe their experience. They say, I feel as if Ive come home. Sometimes, off the table, people are amazed at postural changes that occurred without effort. Later, they report changes in their reactions and behavior in daily life, and even changes in how others treat them. For some clients, even one session can bring about a major shift or address a particular problem. Some have taken advantage of three introductoryrate sessions to successfully resolve issues such as overcoming fear (of an upcoming surgery or test or other event), making a major life decision, or healing physical pain. Others use Rosen on a longer-term basis to work on chronic issues or childhood traumas. Anais Salibian is an extrovert with an affinity for the inner life. She also has a passion for science and needed her beliefs to be grounded in reality. Over the years Shed integrated those interest to find and create processed that she would be able to offer people such as the Rosen Method. She wanted to help people lice authentic lives to the best of their ability by also creating a safe place that comes easily to her as does the work with diverse groups and with asking the right questions. Having spent her whole adulthood seeking, She is now living the life she always wanted. She is grateful to have work that satisfies two of her deepest longings: to be her whole self and to somehow help the world.

Changing Closets

f you are looking for good quality name brand clothing at an affordable price, visit Changing Closets Consignment shop! Changing Closets sets a whole new standard when it comes to consignment shopping. For over 10 years, owner Barbara Bernier has maintained her shop by providing only top notch name brand clothing and accessories. Before opening her consignment shop, Bernier frequented other consignment shops that did not always seem to satisfy her want for acceptable and inexpensive items. I used to shop consignment and sometimes you would find something nice, but other times there might be stained things or things that smelled; I had a desire to provide something better, said Bernier about her motivation to open a consignment shop. While shopping at Changing Closets you will find second hand clothing, shoes, jewelry, purses, and even greeting cards in better condition than when it was originally purchased. All women, from their 20s to 60s, can find something in Changing Closets. This clothing and accessories consignment shop offers popular name brands such as:

Steve Madden, Michael Kors, Coach, Kate Spade, Ann Taylor, Calvin Klein, and more. This buy and sell consignment shop allows customers to come in and earn money by selling their unwanted clothing. You can make more money by trading in your clothing and accessories at Changing Closets in comparison to any other consignment shop. At Changing you will get at least 40% of the price your item would sell for. They except items that are clean, odor free, name brand, and no more than three years old. Bernier is extremely hands on in her shop, as she participates in the organization, purchasing, and distribution of all Changing Closets sales. Her philosophy is that while shopping your experience is as if you were on Rodeo Drive. Some people have a stigma about consignment shops, that they may smell inside or that the clothes may be stained. My shop is the complete opposite. I want to offer good quality items and an even better price, As for young entrepreneurs interested in starting their own business Bernier suggests, organizing a detailed business plan and set goal. She strongly believes in determination and to be prepared for difficult times. Conveniently located in Victor, NY, Changing Closets is sure to make your second hand shopping experience unlike any other. Patients Participate in Hearing Solutions

earing loss usually occurs gradually. It can become severe before anyone realizes whats happening, because the brain compensates, making it difficult to perceive your true hearing. Early recognition and treatment is important before it interferes with your lifestyle. When making a hearing care decision for adults or children, getting the information that you need to be an informed patient is important to your success. Dr. Christine A. Steins business philosophy is centered around her patients experience. If its a problem for a patient, its a problem for me. Stein works diligently until she finds an answer that satisfies, and patient participation is key to her success. With a reputation of providing the highest quality in hearing health care, her company, Professional Hearing Solutions Inc. So PHS evaluates individual lifestyles, and determines what meets their needs most effectively. We invest the time to allow a patient to become comfortable with instruments

and how they interact with the environments, notes Stein. We customize programming to individual needs and listening strategies. We take the time to teach strategies for better communication and listening activities which promote acceptance. Patient satisfaction is key to their service philosophy. And education is key to that satisfaction. The more our patients understand about their hearing loss and the solutions that are available, the greater the chances are that theyll be completely satisfied, Stein adds. Their website features an online, awardwinning educational video that was created to give patients all the information they need to make an informed buying decision. And they are full of solutions! A personal consultation allows staff and doctor to understand you and the situations where youre struggling to hear. An exam and screening test determine the next step. After the initial fitting, cleanings and check-ups are offered at no additional cost. PHS services and repairs hearing aids in their in-office laboratory, and provide off-site repair if needed. St. Anns Community Opens New State-of-the-Art Rehab, Skilled Nursing and Hospice
t. Anns Community recently opened Rochesters only freestanding transitional care center, as well as a state-of-the-art care center in Webster. Were very happy with the two buildings, said St. Anns President and CEO, Betty Mullin-DiProsa. Everyone who tours them seems to say the same thing: Wow! The new Wegman Transitional Care Center in Irondequoit and the new St. Anns Care Center at Cherry Ridge are receiving rave reviews, not only because they enable advanced care, but also because they were designed and decorated as homes. The interiors look just like a house. Patients are welcomed by a charming parlor with a fireplace, are encouraged to grab drinks or snacks in the beautiful country kitchen, and spend time with family and friends in the great room. All the rooms in the two buildings are private, and have a bathroom with a handicap accessible shower. There are only 10 to 12 patient/resident rooms on each household, and this small number of people creates a personal and familiar environment. The small size and homey design of these households naturally encourages person centered carea philosophy of care which enables patients and residents to direct their lives and make their own decisions. For example, if a resident likes to sleep in and eat breakfast two hours later than it is traditionally served, the staff can utilize the kitchen to prepare breakfast for him when he is ready to eat. These buildings will also provide more opportunities for transitional care patients to participate in functional rehabilitation. Patients can plan for their return home by practicing daily tasks like cooking and loading clothing into a washing machine. And because the new Wegman Transitional Care Center in Irondequoit is freestanding, it provides an environment with a single focus: helping patients gain the independence they need to return home. Cherry Ridge, St. Anns Webster campus, now

has transitional care and skilled nursing services, creating a full continuum of care there. This enables residents to age in place and couples to remain near each other even if one spouse needs a higher level of care. As Betty Mullin-DiProsa said, These new spaces were designed to give our residents and patients better carecare that is more patient driven and resident directed. We are thrilled to provide this level of service. For more information or to receive a Free Transitional Care Planning Kit, call 585-697-6311. Canandaigua
he Seneca Indians were a great people (in their languagre, Onondowga), was the largest and most powerful of the Confederation of Iroquois Tribes. Formed in 1570, the Iroquois League or the Five Nations comprised the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga Seneca and later Tuscarora tribes. The Seneca Nation once covered the vast area from Seneca Lake to the Niagara River; tradition holds that the original people of their nation were birthed from the crest of a great hill at the head of a great lake and there those original people chose to settle Kanandarque which means chosen spot. For generations upon generations the heart of the Seneca Indian nation was located on what is now West Avenue in Canandaigua. Throughout its history Canandaigua has also been the chosen spot for several noteworthy people and events including the signing of the great peace treaty of 1794 also called the Canandaigua or Pickering Treaty, which is the oldest honor treaty between the United States and the Six Nations of the Iroquois League; and after Susan B. Anthony voted in the 1872 presidential election, she was tried and convicted in 1873 for illegally voting, the court fined her $100 which she refused to pay, the judge did not require her to be jailed. Gideon Granger, who served as the first U.S. Postmaster General from 1801 to 1814, making him the longest serving Postmaster General as of 2012. Granger served under Presidents Jefferson and Madison, after his retirement chose to make his home in Canandaigua, now known as the historic Granger Homestead and Carriage Museum. Besides the Granger Homestead another family who made their Summer home in Canandaigua was Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Ferris Thompson, who were New York financiers and Frederick Thompson was amongst the founders of Citibank. A widowed Mrs. Thompson was one of the areas biggest philanthropists and transformed their Summer estate into Sonnenberg Gardens, one of Americas great castles. As of 2012 there are 271 wineries in the State of New York and New York is the third largest wine producing state in the Country, focusing attention on the Finger Lakes region; Canandaigua was chosen for the New York Wine and Culinary Center, which offers visitors the opportunity of tasting New York State Wines, sample local foods and take both culinary classes and educational tours. With a commitment to fostering a growing artistic community, arts and culture is thriving in Canandaigua; the Hochstein School of Music and Dance chose to have a campus at the Canandaigua Academy and it is home for the Constellation Marvin A. Sands Performing Arts Center(CMAC) to host acclaimed performers of World class talent. There are numerous arts and artisan festivals throughout the year: the Downtown Arts & Music Festival, Sonnenbergs Arts at the Garden and the Annual Art Walk, to name a few. Canandaiguas artistic community is nurtured, supported, developed and encouraged by the nonprofit association, All Things Art; and is well represented on the Finger Lakes Art Trail. A wonderfully eclectic selection of businesses have been chosen to set up shop in Canandaigua, ranging from great restaurants to galleries, fine art, candles, gourmet coffees, pottery, photography, furniture, spices, herbs, and one of kind gifts and collectibles. This variety of businesses and services make life interesting in this vibrant, thriving community. From its rich history to its picturesque lakefronts to its busy shops, beautiful tree lined streets with gracious homes that have lovely gardens. Today over 100 years later this same appreciation still holds true for Canandaigua New York which is truly the chosen spot.

Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park

estled in the picturesque Finger Lakes region of New York, Sonnenberg Gardens is a New York State Historic Park offering one of the few remaining estates in the U.S. with a Queen Annestyle mansion and formal gardens. Built in 1887, Sonnenbergs 40room Mansion offers visitors a glimpse of what life was like in the late nineteenth century. Along with 17 other structures across the 50-acre property, the estate boasts nine formal gardens representing many cultures and historic periods including 12th-century Asia, 4thcentury Rome and the French Renaissance. A 20-acre arboretum of rare and exotic trees, plants and unique landscapes stretches across the grounds, while a Lord & Burnham wood-and-glass greenhouse complex of the Victorian period features varieties of orchids, succulents, tropical plants and flowers, as well as vegetables. The Sonnenberg Mansion Perched atop the sun-bathed hill of the estate known as Sonnenberg (German for sunny hill) is a 40-room Queen Anne-style mansion. New York City bank financier Frederick Ferris Thompson and his wife, Mary Clark Thompson, the daughter of New York State governor Myron Holley Clark, purchased the property in 1863 when it featured just a brick farmhouse on 14 acres. As business prospered, the couple purchased additional acreage and replaced the farmhouse with the mansion, which was built between 1885-1887. Today, visitors can view many of its stately rooms, including the impressive Great Hall, the Billiard and Trophy Rooms, the Library, Drawing Room, Dining Room, and upstairs, the Master Bedroom and several additional guest rooms. The Mansion is handicap-accessible throughout the first floor. A number of special events throughout the Garden Season are hosted on the wide porches of the Veranda, which encircles the south and west sides of the Mansion. Sonnenberg Gardens & Grounds Much of the signature floral design and landscaping seen today at our nine formal gardens bears the imprint of philanthropist Mary Clark Thompson, who brought home ideas and art from her many trips to European and Asian locales. Following the 1899 death of her husband, Mrs. Thompson involved hundreds of workers between 1902 and 1919 in a re-design of the gardens. She was assisted primarily by Boston landscape architect Ernest Bowditch, and later, his assistant John Handrahan. View our online blooming schedule to see what flowers will be in bloom during your visit. Take time to wander and enjoy The Greenhouse Conservatory Complex, The Japanese garden, The Sub-Rosa garden, The Rose Garden, The Italian garden, The Blue & White Garden, The Pansy Garden, The Moonlight Garden, The Old Fashioned Garden, The Peacock House/Aviary, and Rock garden. Kids Trail Adventure Not only do kids under 12 visit free at Sonnenberg, but a trail of clues along the garden path with hidden signs and stamps provides an adventure. Collect all special stamps at spots along the trail on your adventure map and win a prize at the end! Finger Lakes Wine Center Featuring some of the best wines and gourmet food products from more than 40 partner wineries and farms, we are a virtual gateway to all the Finger Lakes Wine Trails, and a member of the Canandaigua

Wine Trail. Housed in the historic Bay House near the conservatory, the Finger Lakes Wine Center is readily accessible from the main parking lot and garden admission is not required. A walking ramp along the north side provides wheelchair access to the retail area upstairs. Our knowledgeable staffers are on hand to help you make selections. We just celebrated our 10th year in 2010! Go to our website for information on our Specialty Wine-Themed Events. Meet representatives from local wineries who will showcase their wines at these fun and informative tastings ($3 pp). Learn about wine-making in the Finger Lakes and discover your new favorite wine. At The tasting Room, on any given day, visitors can taste selections from 10-15 different wines from our rotating-inventory tasting bar in the Wine Center cellar downstairs for a nominal fee. Featured vintages encompass the residual sugar range from dry to semi-sweet reds and whites, dessert or sparkling wines, all made with New York State-grown grapes. The tasting room closes one-half hour before the wine sales and gift shop upstairs. The 1911 stained glass Tiffany-style window -- the focal point of our tasting room was crafted by the Pike Stained Glass Studio in Rochester, NY. Its image is also featured on the label of Sonnenbergs own Abundance wine. Over the Garden Season, the Finger Lakes Wine Center sells more than 160 different wine products and gourmet food products from more than 40 partner wineries and farms. One of our main objectives is to provide information about these wineries and introduce visitors to the wide array of wines and food produced in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. Our daily rotation in the downstairs Tasting Room of the Historic Bay House features our three Signature Sonnenberg wines and a rotating roster of vintages from these partner-wineries. Upstairs, our shelves are stocked with many of their popular vintages, and a 10% discount on all bottles is available when you purchase a make-your-own case of 12. As always, Sonnenberg members enjoy 10% off all gift and wine purchases another great benefit of supporting our community non-profit! Through the support of our partner wineries, Sonnenberg proudly offers three private-label wines. Private after-hours rental of the Bay House Tasting Room for groups of 50 or fewer people may be arranged. See our website for more information. Gift Shop Sharing space with the Finger Lakes Wine Center inside the historic Bay House is Sonnenbergs retail gift shop, which carries an assortment of garden-theme, Victorian and contemporary gifts, including an array of Sonnenberg apparel, history books, photo postcards, calendars and more, plus jewelry, pottery, candles, and other collectibles many hand-crafted by Finger Lakes artisans some of which you can buy online! ARTI
A

UES

RTIQUES Heirlooms and Art is a quality consignment home furnishings retail store located in the beautiful Finger Lakes area of New York State at 43 South Main Street in Canandaigua, NY. Owners Matthew and Cindy Burt considered the opportunity to buy the business formerly known as Changes Everything in the summer of 2008. Cindy has a tremendous love for and many years experience with researching, buying and selling antique and vintage items for both private and professional purposes. She is quick to point out, however, that she is not a professional dealer or appraiser. ARTIQUES is not just a consignment store...it is not just an antique store...it is not just an art gallery...it is not just a coffee shop. It is an eclectic and unique mix of old and new; primitive to modern; ever changing and always maintaining high standards with the products they carry. Just a few of the items that are routinely available are: scatter and room size rugs, vintage and modern jewelry, sterling silver pieces, antique and vintage art, vintage clothing, china, glassware and a large selection of furniture. Whether shopping for yourself or for a gift, it is sure to be found at ARTIQUES. Items found in ARTIQUES are quality antique, primitive, vintage, kitsch and contemporary. Among the artwork available for sale are the current works of local artisans. Each month features an individual artist who gets full display of one of the shops main street windows. Many varieties of gourmet coffee, frozen drinks, espresso drinks, teas and pastries are available for purchase. They have expanded their services to include lamp repair and furniture painting. They also have linked with service providers such as rug cleaning, furniture repair and restoration, chair caning, clock repair, interior decorating and picture and

art framing. Their customers receive special consideration when using any of these companies. ARTIQUES has been referring their customers to Matt Fairbrother who is involved with furniture restoration and repair. Matt has worked on all types of furniture, including pieces that date back to the 16th century. He is a stickler for quality work He prides himself on his finish work it has to be smooth! Many times people assume that you have to strip a piece to renovate it and thereby lose the old look. Thats not true. Putting life back into a piece doesnt mean you have to make it look brand new unless, of course, thats what they want. Old age is what antiques are all about. Theres nothing wrong with showing age says Matt. My job is to bring out the natural beauty, give it a facelift. Furniture is very personal to many people. They live with it everyday. Some pieces become part of the family. They are treasured more for their sentimental value than their actual worth. His greatest satisfaction is taking a piece of furniture thought to be beyond repair, giving it a little tender loving care and then watching the clients face light up when its returned! For the Love of Lizzy Candles is owned by Darcey Elias and began in Elmira, NY after the birth of her first daughter Elizabeth in 2001. Candle making began as a hobby and quickly blossomed into a profitable business. The business is now located at 41 S Main St in Canandaigua, NY after their family moved from Elmira to Canandaigua in 2011. ARTIQUES carries a wide selection of Lizzy candles and scents! They can also be purchased at www.lizzycandles.com. Lizzy Candles offers a wide variety of strongly scented jar candles in assorted sizes. The restaurant prides itself on serving customers with some of the freshest ingredients around the Finger Lakes region that are from the Finger Lakes regions local farms. Recipes are made by the owners family in an atmosphere that is sure to leave a lasting impact on your senses. Owner Juan Guevera started out in the restaurant industry as a busboy and a dishwasher who helped out his parents with their own recipes that they made themselves from their own ingredients that they themselves purchased and traveled with. Gueveras Father is an engineer and his Mother is a teacher who are both very involved in the Hispanic communities of the Sodus region. In the 1990s his parents bought a car wash which they made into a community

center where their neighbors could relax and come together, cook their Mexican food recipes, and eat together with their community. Yet what is even more interesting was the Guevera familys purchase of an old car wash in the Sodus community and what they turned it into over time. The Gueveras used the car wash as a focal point for the creation of an established restaurant in Sodus which was called the El Rincon Mexicano that through word-of-mouth, customers became interested in the El Rincon Mexicano restaurant on Old Ridge Road in Sodus. People started frequenting the restaurant until the demand of the restaurant increased over time due to its popularity it opened up El Rincon Mexicano 2 in Canandaigua in 2006 on Beeman Street. Gueveras love for natural, local, foods has inspired him since his youth, to serve and provide customers with some of the best authentic Mexican food available. What is best about the food is that none of it is canned, packaged, or preserved. Its all fresh food created with a family proud of their heritage, Rio Tomatlan is a genuine, enjoyable spot for fine Mexican cuisine in the Finger Lakes community.

Beer, Wings and Bowling at L & M Lanes

& M Lanes is one of those small neighborhood joints that is a hidden treasure, with cheap bowling, good beer, and great pub-style food. Casual and comfortable, youll be welcomed as a neighbor when you walk in and sit down. The small local bowling alley is located on Merchants Road right off of Culver Road in Rochester, NY. The retro ball returns that return the balls above the lane are nostalgic touch, the atmosphere is casual and fun, and the hot wings are really hot! With 12 lanes (six upstairs and six down), open bowling is always available, but lanes are often full with leagues, so call ahead if you plan to bowl. Other features include bumper bowling, darts and Quick Draw. But besides being a bowling alley, the L & M Lanes bar/restaurant is quietly famous for their legendary chicken wings, served crispy and covered in a tangy

sauce with a hint of heat. They are one of the best kept secrets in Rochester. They serve burgers, nachos, French fries and onion rings, too. They offer a surprisingly large and fine beer selection, in both bottles and on tap. Many regional and national micro-brewery standouts are available, including all of Anchors regular offerings, Sierra Nevada Torpedo, Southern Tier Finn and Matts, Victory Hop Devil, Victory Storm King and many others. Probably as many people come for the wings and beer as the bowling! Private parties are welcome with advance notice. Open seven days a week, L & M Lanes is located at 873 Merchants Road in Rochester, NY. You can call 585-288-1210, visit www.lmlanes.com, or e-mail them at info@lmlanes. com.

An Experience Thats Anything But Ordinary

Different Path Gallery began in 2010 with owner Katherine Westons desire for her own studio space close to home. On a whim, I looked into a building that had been listed for sale and was surprised to find that I could buy the building for a reasonable price, says Weston. A lot of work, and two years later, she has a gift shop, 2 art galleries, classroom space, four studios rented to local artists, and her own studio space all in that building. The official shop dogs are often visiting the space as well, waiting to greet customers. The Gallery Gift Shop carries artwork and fine crafts from over 50 artists. Described as a perfect mix of elegance and whimsy, it lives up to its reputation. Everything from pottery and jewelry to socks and clocks can be found in the shop. All is made in the U.S. or is Fair Trade. There are fourteen local artists on consignment. Theres no mass-produced anything here, notes Weston proudly. Yet prices are remarkably reasonable and can accommodate any budget and occasion. The Main and Upper Galleries host local artists on a monthly basis. Each month the exhibit changes and an artists reception is held on the second Friday. But artwork isnt the

only thing to see at the Gallery. Dance performances, poetry readings and music jams are a regular part of the events scheduled for your enjoyment. From dancing to drumming, you will find something on the event schedule for your taste! Professional artists rent 4 studio spaces in the building and their presence enhances the atmosphere. They often attend events, show their art, and teach classes. Weston also has her own studio in the building and her art is displayed in the shop. The newly formed Brockport Artists Guild is housed there as well. The Classroom is used by a diverse group of artists who offer various classes for youth or adults at the gallery, and is used for figure drawing on Sunday evenings. Music jams are also held every Sunday. A new pottery studio is under construction and should be open by late summer 2012. The store and gallery will be closed in July for renovations but reopen in August. Whether you seek fun, inspiration, education, or unique gifts, A Different Path Gallery is the place to visit! Stop in at 27 Market Street in Downtown Brockport or at www. DifferentPathGallery.com.

The Attraction of Magnetic Hematite Bracelets

cience has established that magnetic energy passes through all material, thus affecting all living things. Magnetic fields surround the earth and protect all living things from harmful radiation. Magnets can increase the blood flow in capillaries, flushing out lactic acid and other inflammatory substances from tissues, thereby relieving pain and inflammation and easing tension headaches and light migraines. Hematite is a natural steel gray or red stone comprised of iron oxide which is the principal ore of iron; in fact, the word hematite comes from the Greek, haimo, meaning blood. This stone is highly effective at grounding and protecting; it balances the meridians, as well as encouraging will power, reliability, courage, and optimism. Hematite also stimulates concentration and focus. In healing, hematite aids in circulation as it restores, strengthens and regulates the blood supply. A wide variety of health benefits have been attributed to magnetic jewelry. Magnetic hematite can maintain the natural charge of nerve cells, thus reducing pain. Many use it to improve quality of sleep, aid the immune system, relieve ailments of the hands, wrists and fingers, and generally enhance physical energy and vitality. Magnetic hematite comes in a variety of shapes: round, barrel, tube, rice, hexagon, twist, and more. Hematite beads can be coated with pastel and ivory colors (called pearls), painted with designs over the coating (Picasso), or silver-plated. Rainbow hematite gets its beautiful iridescent colors from a metallic coating. Gingerbread Shoppe Delights with Vintage Treasures

he Shoppes three-story building located on Route 31, has a history dating back to 1898. Originally built as a private residence, it soon became the National Freight Bureau near the turn of the century. The WayneCounty gateway from Rochester, the Macedon village was a prosperous canal, railway and trolley town. During the mid century, the building was home to Kellys Drug Store. Recently rehabilitated after 10 years of dormancy, the building, like many of the items it now showcases, has now found new life. Laurie Leenhouts and her cousin, Annie DAmbra, have been interested in history and have been long-time collectors of a variety of antiques. Both were very excited about opening up this new shop. We especially enjoy creatively repurposing older items. Finding new uses for old objects, and then also decorating with them and other vintage and collectible items, we are able to create a sort of whimsical atmoshere here at the Gingerbread Shoppe, says Leenhouts. As Macedon village residents, we saw potential in the declining Main Street building, adds DAmbra. Now the cousins who share a passion for Primitive and Shabby Chic styles can work together, close to their homes, and showcase what an eclectic array of refurbished cast offs can look like when paired creatively with more traditional historic treasures. When you enter the Gingerbread Shoppe, youll feel like you are taking a pleasant stroll into the past. Everywhere you look, you will see that the creative cousins have incorporated things with a glorious past life, like antique stained glass windows and Steiff bears. Antique German and French bisque dolls, from the turn of the 19th century, find temporary homes at the shoppe, eagerly awaiting their new adoptive homes. The main floor includes a variety of antiques, in addition to the antique doll collection, you will find a book room

and other themed areas. A customer favorite, the Blue Room, features blue and white china and accessories. You will also be able to enjoy a scenic view from decks off the Main and second floors. You cant help but pause at the Ginger Rose Tea Room, located in the front area of the second floor. Visitors often stop there with friends in the Victorian-style tea room, displaying English china and original rose wallpaper, for a cup of tea or coffee, providing shoppers with a convenient spot to relax on their four level journey. Renovations of the second floor also include the installation of a complete 1950s vintage turquoise GE kitchen. The Attic has a variety of vintage clothing, linens, bridals gowns, aRaggedy Ann collection and a resale items childrens room. The Cellar has tools, wrought iron, and other mantiques. A walk-out from the basement door offers shoppers garden items for sale behind the shoppe. Laurie has been making grapevine wreaths and baskets for many years which are displayed along the white washed fences in the back garden area. The Shoppe is located on 75 Main Street, Route 31, in the village of Macedon. Their current open hours are Tuesdays through Thursdays, from 2-5 pm, and Fridays and Saturdays from 104pm. For a tantalizing peek, visit them on the web at www.gingerbreadshoppe. com . From the vintage clothing and exquisite linens on the third floor, down to the garden level relics and locally made grapevine wreaths, treasure hunters are sure to find something wonderful. Bring a friend with you, and be prepared to reminisce as you move from delightful treasure to treasure. You will be certain to bring home as a souvenir that will remind you of the happy trip you took to Macedon and down memory lane!
