CERN Initial Letter For Yr 12

Dear Parents/Carers
Visit to CERN in Geneva, 14th to 16th July 2016
As part of the AS and A2 Physics curriculum, students study particle and nuclear physics. The
understanding of the scientific process and how scientists work is also an important part of their curriculum.
In order to develop their understanding in these areas the Science department is planning a trip to CERN,
home of the LHC, in Geneva.
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are
probing the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex
scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter - the fundamental particles.
From : http://home.web.cern.ch/about
Students will have an insight into the world of particle and nuclear physics, on a guided tour by
one of the scientists working at the project. A visit lasts between two and three hours. It starts with an
introductory presentation on CERN, followed by a film, a visit to one of the experiments and/or to an
accelerator located at the surface.
A company specialized in school visits, Adaptable travel, will organize flights and
accommodation for two nights at the Geneva Youth Hostel (http://www.yh-geneva.ch/). More practical
details will be available in due course, and a meeting between parents/carers and myself will be
organized closer to the departure date.
The total cost for the trip will be around 450, which includes flights, accommodation, meals and
transfer to the airport. This value may change depending on how quickly we pay the booking fees for all
the students involved, as air fares may rise the closer it gets to the time of flying. We can only quote you
an accurate price after a booking deposit of 175 is paid to the travel agent.
In order to be eligible to go on the visit , you must pay a 175 booking fee by the 15th December
2015. This booking fee is not refundable. A further letter will be sent setting out the details of the
required payment instalments.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding the trip.
Yours sincerely
Mr Pimentao
