Maha mrityunjaya Mantra one of the oldest and most significant Mantras in
Indian mythology and spirituality. The Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap addresses Lord Shiva. It
is a blend of three Hindi language words i.e. Maha, which means great, Mrityun means
death and Jaya means victory, which is translated as victory over death. It is also
famous as Rudra Mantra or Trayambakam Mantra. The Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra is
known to have been made by Rishi Markandeya. It is said that the Moon was once in
difficulty, cursed by King Daksha. Rishi Markandeya bestowed Sati, Daksha's daughter,
with the Mahamritryunjaya Mantra for the Moon. According to another translation this
is the Bija mantra as disclosed to Rishi Kahola that was presented by Lord Shiva to sage
Sukracharya, who taught it to Rishi Dadichi, who gave it to King Kshuva, through whom
it reached the Shiva Purana.
This Mantra is related to very aggressive form of Lord Shiva. Thats why its practice
should be done very carefully or in supervision of some expert person (Guru or master)
The Mantra and Meaning of the Mantra:
om tryambaka yajamahe sugandhi pushtivardhanam
purvarukamiva bandhananmmrityor mokshiye maamritat
We worship Lord Shiva (three eyed), who is our nurturer. We pray him to give us liberty
from confinements of death just as as cucumber gets plucked very easily from its roots.
Reciting this mantra has usually been known to generate positive physical, mental and
emotional advantages. Often thought of as a moksha mantra, this prayer is believed
to help promote longevity. This mantra is addressed to Lord Shiva and can help to
prevent the ill-timed death of you or your loved ones.
