Module 6 Objectives:
To ensure that housekeeping staff knows the vocabulary that describes the repeated
actions (reaching, stretching, bending and lifting) in their daily work.
To apply WHIMS to the strong cleaning products used in housekeeping.

6.1 Background Information

Most of the safety issues around housekeeping have to do with ergonomics, especially
repetitive movements. To understand good ergonomics, the learners must first know the
action verbs related to cleaning.
General housekeeping themes, that is to say, maintaining the home, can easily be
developed to include any workplace. Tidying a work area, keeping walkways clear of
hazards, and the correct handling of hazardous materials are key safety issues in most
sectors.
Look at the generic exercises on housekeeping and repairs in the home (Activity 4.2.1)
taken from the Oxford Picture Dictionary (older edition). Move on to the extended
vocabulary and phrases from the Picture Process Dictionary (Activity 4.A.2). Then go on
to the Safety Dos and Donts. The photos and dos and donts are taken from the OSHA
posters which are very good, but bilingual, which makes them a little hard to read.
Its easy to see how the housekeeping exercises pave the way for good safety practices in
factories and other work areas. See Exercise 3 in the Section 5 in Module 7, Industry.

CAL/OSHA website. See Resources for details.

6.2 Classroom Activities

Activity 6.2.1 Housekeeping in General

Use the pages from the Oxford Picture Dictionary to test previous knowledge of verbs
and nouns associated with cleaning and housekeeping.
Move to the pages from the Picture Process Dictionary to expand the vocabulary and
practice more complex structures. For very low level learners, the captions can be cut
away. Use the pictures alone for oral practice, or write new, simplified captions for use in
the class.
(See the instructions on manipulating graphics in Introduction.)
Activity 6.2.2 Housekeeping Duties (Reading and speaking)
Distribute a copy of the Housekeeping Duties List. For low level learners use only a few
items from the list at a time. Have learners cut up the picture pages from the previous
activity. Ask them to assemble pictures that represent the items on the list.
Using the list and the pictures, have students talk about their daily routine (real or
imaginary). They will use sentences like
First, I sweep the service area. Then, I mop the floor.
I have to/I dont have to empty the garbage.
Have them role play a supervisor giving orientation to a new employee.
You have to take the laundry to the laundry room.
Dont forget to bag the cans and bottles.

HOUSEKEEPING

DUTIES

Service Area Night Staff

Sweep service area
Empty garbage.
Mop service area, kitchen and cafeteria.
Vacuum lounge and hallways.
Clean kitchen sinks and staff washrooms.
Dust reception area.
Maid Service
Vacuum carpet and dust bedroom furniture.
Scrub toilet, sink and bathtub.
Clean mirrors and windows.

Check drawers and cupboards.
Empty waste baskets and line with clean bags.
Recycle cans, bottles and paper
Bag other garbage.
Put away all cleaning equipment in the supply room.
Leave all dirty laundry in the laundry room on ground floor.

Activity 6.2.3: Tips for Tiolets (WHMIS)

Review the information about biohazards and discuss the hazards of using strong
cleaning products.
See the photos in the Visuals section to illustrate the dangers of and the protection against
hazardous cleansers.
Use the handout and reading exercise Tips for Toilets to reinforce vocabulary and
emphasize the use of rubber gloves for handling cleaning products.

Tips for Toilets

Can you label the parts
of this toilet?
Lid
Tank

Seat
Bowl

Bacteria can live and

grow in toilets.

Disinfectant spray

Bowl brush

Toilet bowl cleaner

Spray the surfaces and let the cleanser sit for a while.

Leave the toilet bowl cleaner in the bowl for several minutes.

Wipe the surfaces clean. Use a different cloth for the bowl.

Rinse the bowl brush well. Bacteria can live and grow there.

Activity 6.2.4: Dos and Donts

Distribute the Dos and Donts cards and have learners join the captions to the pictures.
Put up the Housekeeping Safety Posters and discuss them one by oneprobably over
several days.
For this activity, it is a good idea to plastic coat the cards and use a dry erase marker so
that you can wipe the cards clean and use them again. Distribute the dos and donts
pictures and have students write captions for each picture. They may need to consult the
posters to understand the message that is intended. Encourage them to draw on the
pictures to clarify the message, for example red circles for donts, arrows showing the
direction of the movement or angle of the wrist.
With the class, choose and edit the best captions. You might have the students make a
matching set of cards and play matching games with them.
Activity 6.2.5: Creating a Housekeeping Safety Checklist
Group students at tables of 4 or 5. Tell them the task is to create a checklist for
housekeepers to remind them about working safely every day. They can use copies of the
posters if necessary but they should choose the 10 safety tips they think are the most
important.
They can print the finished (student edited) list on the computer, or present it as an
illustrated poster.
