    A Woman in Offshore

    The oil and gas market is one of the most promising industries. Because of that
    reason, when I was in high school, I always have dreamed to be an engineer and
    worked in oil rigs. I applied as a student in Chemical Engineering UGM. Then, I
    realized that many male students study to engineering and they have the same
    dream like mine.
    People know that the oil and gas industry is still dominated by men, especially
    for drilling. I do not think the male dominance makes me down. I want to stand
    out as a woman among them. I like challenging myself to compete with boys
    since I was young. When people say that oil industry is a work for men, it drive
    me to see what made it a career for men.
    I want to break the stereotype as a Javanese woman. My mother thinks women
    should stay at home, take care of her family, and never get a higher pay than
    her husband. But, I have a different opinion. When women work, they still can
    take care of her family, increase a family finance, and they do not feel stress
    because just stuck at home. I want to be the first engineer in my family.
    Last year I won an award about safety procedure in offshore platform. Since that
    competition, I am interested to work in offshore and create a platform safer for
    the workers. I think safety is important in work area, especially offshore.
    Evacuation hold an important role to keep the personnel safe from danger zone. I
    want to be a specialist on safety procedure in oil rigs, so I have read many books
    about safety and escape, evacuation, rescue, such as Chemical Process Safety
    by Crowl and Louvar.
    If I work in oil and gas industry, I can expand my knowledge about safety and
    meet different people. I can learn from the seniors how to make a better
    platform. In the oil and gas sector, there are always changes and it makes me
    thrilling to do the best I can.
