Exercising Your Name

Have all students stand in a circle, including the teacher.

The first student to the right of the teacher says his/her first name, then
does an exercise or a stretch.

The next student must say the first persons name, do that persons
exercise, then say his/her own name and do his/her own exercise.

The third person must say both of the first two persons names, do their
exercises then his/her own etc...

Then the last person is the teacher who must go around the circle,
starting with the first person, and say each student's name plus do their
exercise.

Accommodation /
Modification

Some students may

already know each
other, but it will be a
good way for teacher to
get to know names
better in a fun way.

Alternate activity is the

human knot.

Game: A Tangled Web

Gather students in a circle sitting around you on the floor. Hold a large ball of
yarn. Start by telling the students something about yourself. Then roll the ball
of yarn to a student without letting go of the end of the yarn. The student who
gets the ball of yarn tells his or her name and something good about himself or
herself. Then the student rolls the yarn to somebody else, holding on to the
strand of yarn. Soon students have created a giant web. After everyone has
spoken, you and all the students stand up, continuing to hold the yarn. How
does this activity relate to team work? Start a discussion of how this activity
relates to the idea of teamwork -- for example, the students need to work
together and not let others down. To drive home your point about teamwork,
have one student drop his or her strand of yarn; that will demonstrate to
students how the web weakens if the class isn't working together.

Customized warm-up activities.

-Many times warm up activities can be boring and mundane. Having
ownership in an activity can make it more fun.

During
12:05

- Pair off students at the beginning of the year and tell them to make up
their own activity for a 5 minute warm up.
-The pair can lead the class on their designated day. Jumping jacks,
jogging, dancing, stretching, sit-ups, can be suggested as starters - but ask
them to be creative.
12:15

-It can be fun to see the ideas they come up with when it is their turn to
lead the class

Football drill: Simon Shows.

Players are spaced out and facing coach who has the ball. When
coach holds ball to right, all players run tin that direction, when coach
moves ball to left, players move in that direction, ball to chest, players
move towards coach, ball held down low, all players should drop on
ground and immediately get back up.

Result: This drill will teach players to react to whats happening in

front of them on the field. However, coaches need to make sure
proper fundamentals are used by all the players.

Players feet should not cross over as they slide from side to side.
Also, players shouldnt lose sight of the coach. Their heads should
be up at all times.

Run Around Cones (offense)

This is a simple drill that helps develop ball carrying skills and coordination. Divide your
team into 2-3 groups. Each group lines up in a straight line. Set up cones every 3 yards (3-4
cones per group should be fine for this age group). Then on the coachs command, have the
first player in each group run around the cones. You can make this drill into a relay race, the

first team to finish running through the cones wins the game.
Team Hand-off Exchange
With this drill, you can have a number of players work on the proper way to give and receive
a hand-off. Divide your players into 2 lines approximately 20 yards away from each other.
A player from one line starts with the ball. On the coachs whistle, the player with the ball
races down field (maintaining the proper grip on the football). Once the player reaches the
1st player in the other line, the player with the ball hands the ball off to that 1st player. That
player is now the ball carrier and races down field towards the other line. Emphasize holding
the ball properly when running, good hand-off exchange (hand-off acceptance target, and
good hand-offs into target). This is a great drill to use if you are employing reverse, double
or triple reverse plays that rely on a smooth hand-off to be effective.
Pass and Catch
Players will pair of and begin 5 yards from each other. Have players throw the
ball back and forth. Make sure players use the appropriate touch on the pass,
according to the distance they are from one until another. After a few throws,
have each player take a step back. Continue. Next, make it a competition: pair
that drops pass, sits down - go until 1 remaining pair.

Discuss why we did some of the drills. Teamwork, be aware of where the
ball is, hold ball properly, practice.

Self-Evaluation / Reflection:
I over planned and ended up changing things around to work better for what was presented.
Location was changed to inside, the students wanted to go straight to playing soccer instead
of activities. Name game was inclusive of everyone. The human knot was fun, the boys and
girls were a bit reluctant at first having to link hands, but once they got started unknotting
they enjoyed the activity. I let them pick partners for the warmups they will be in charge of
and gave them some time, and to be ready to lead a warmup when they are called on to for
classes to come. Played Simon shows to get them running. Then we played capture the flag.
I need to make more of a presence in the class, use my whistle to gather attention faster.
Improvised with equipment, didnt have flags, and so used diferent colored balls. Also had
to change rules, just needed to reach and touch the ball without being tagged to win for
your team. Better to play with more space, students still had fun. Then to wrap everything
up, linked hands in a circle and had to get hula-hoop through body, each taking turns till it
got around the circle.
