NORTH AND SOUTH---- GASKELL
It features a strong female protagonist, a mature love story, and relevant
social and political commentary regarding industrialization and class antagonisms present in mid-19th century England. The fictional industrial town of Milton was based on Manchester, where Gaskell lived with her family. North and South was published in weekly installments in Household Words, the magazine edited by Charles Dickens, from September 2nd,
1854 to January 27th, 1855. The novel was originally to be
titledMargaret Hale, but was changed at the suggestion of Dickens. It thus calls greater attention to the disparities between the North and the South, which was a common subject in the discourse of the day. Dickens also wanted the section on Mr. Hale and his religious doubts trimmed. This and other suggestions on reshaping and altering for serialization annoyed Gaskell and damaged the pair's cordial working relationship.

However, it did steal into her mind that perhaps his behavior was a way to mask his pain. RIFLESSIONE DIVERSIT UOMO E DONNA PSICOLOGICA- POI IL PADRE MOLLA LA CHIESA Margret was scornful of this and wondered why people living in an industrial town would need a tutor. Mr. Hale gently corrected her and told her that several people did want learning and that a Mr. Thornton, to whom Mr. Hale was recommended by Mr. Bell, was very intelligent. Nicholas's fervid atheism Quartieri separati nelle citt industriali tra middlee-class e operai the novel of manners is a realistic story that concentrates the readers attention upon the customs and conversation, and the ways of thinking and valuing of the people of a social class.[1] As such, the narrative structure of the novel of manners recreates a social world (civil, military, political, business) and shows the spheres of public and private life sufficiently to convey the dominance of social-codemores upon the personal and public lives of the people in the story.
