COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course builds upon the foundation established in Math 1. Overarching themes are
centered on deepening and extending linear and exponential relationships, exploring quadratic relationships,
geometric similarity, right triangle trigonometry, and probability. The Common Core Standards of Mathematical
Practice apply throughout this course and students will continue to experience mathematics as a coherent,
useful, and logical subject that helps make sense of problem situations. Since this is an honors section there will
be additional topics covered as well as more in depth investigations of concepts.
REQUIRED MATERIALS:

Workbook
Loose Leaf Paper
Pencil, Pencil, Pencil!

3-Ring Binder/Folder
Graphing Calculator (TI-83, 84)

All of these materials are to be brought to class every day.

CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK: You are expected to do work both in and out of class. You will be able to earn up
to 2 points per day. Those points will come from daily quizzes, completion of homework and participation in
class. On most days, you will have a short homework quiz where you will be asked to do similar problems to
what was in the homework. These quizzes do not have to be made up if you are absent, but you will be given a
grade for them directly from completion of the corresponding homework assignment. It is your responsibility
No matter how the homework is assessed, you will always have an opportunity to ask questions.
OTHER COURSE WORK: Throughout the course, we will be exploring and discovering mathematical concepts
through the use of problem based tasks (PBTs). These tasks will often be completed in class within your
cooperative learning groups, however, there will be times that a task will be assigned individually and completed
outside of class. In-class tasks will be completed by the end of the assigned period and occasionally will be graded
for completion and accuracy. Out of class tasks will be given a specific due date and these tasks will be graded for
completeness and accuracy and will not be accepted for credit if they are turned in past the due date.
This class will also have one project per semester to be completed. The projects grades will be included in the
problem based tasks section of your grade so it is imperative that they are completed and turned in on time.
There will also be a quarterly extension packet where you will be given problems related to content of the
course but involve more challenging problems that involve more problem solving then typical.
As part of being in the honors curriculum, there is a participation requirement in completion of math contests.
There will be a number of contests offered both before and after school which generally take 30 minutes. More
details and a schedule of the dates of the contests will be distributed later.
GRADE:

Your grade is calculated on the following scale.

A 100%-90%

B 89%-80%

C 79-70%

D 69-60%

F 59% - 0%

Your course grade will be determined by weighting several categories: tests will be weighted 65%, quizzes
15%, habit of minds (HOMs)/projects 15%, and homework 5%.
To determine your semester grade, course work will be worth 80% and the final exam will be worth 20%.

TECHNOLOGY: Mr. Malczewski has a Google Community site. The web site contains class information,
announcements, all of your HW assignments (if you forget ), as well as copies of many class documents and a
copy of the notes for the day for absent students. This will be an important resource, one in which is highly
recommended that you use often.
TARDIES/ABSENCES: You are allowed only one unexcused tardy. After the first one, you will be given a
twenty-five minute detention. This will continue until the fifth tardy when you will be referred to the deans
office.
Similarly, you are allowed one unexcused absence. You will receive a 0 for any work missed due to unexcused
absences. After your second unexcused absence, a call to your parents will be placed. Any more unexcused
absences will be handled by the deans office. Any major assessments that are missed due to an unexcused
absence must be made up upon return or they will result in a zero for the assessment. Any made up
assessments will have a grade reduced by 50% of earned points.
For excused absences, you are responsible to make up the work by the time you take the chapter test. NO
WORK IS ACCEPTED AFTER THE TEST. If you are absent the day before a test (typically a review day), you are
still required to take the test the next day. You can get any materials for the review online, including
solutions. If you are absent the day of the test, you are required to make up the test within one week. Extended
absences will be given special consideration. Be sure to discuss your plans with me.
DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES
For major classroom disruptions, the following procedure will be implemented.
1st Offense - Student will be issued a warning.
2nd Offense - Student will be kept after class for 1 minute and have to listen to Mr. Ms infamous lecture on the
importance of school and your future.
3rd Offense - Student will be assigned a 25-minute detention and the parents will be called.
4th Offense Student will be given a deans referral.
