PERSUASIVE ESSAY

The goal of a persuasive essay is to convince the reader to accept a point of view or persuade the
reader to take action.
A persuasive essay is most effective when the writer supports his or her position with evidence
from experts. You will need to do some research and cite facts and sources in your paper.
We have studied the 5-paragraph essay form, with particular attention to the thesis statement. Be
sure that your introduction paragraph ends with a 3-point thesis statement. That thesis statement
will be the organizing statement for your essay.

WRITE A FIVE-PARAGRAPH PERSUASIVE ESSAY ON ONE OF THE TOPICS LISTED BELOW.

1. Your principal wants to invite a celebrity speaker to your school. Think about the
celebrity you would choose to have speak; then, write an essay in support of this person.
Be sure to include convincing reasons and details to support your choice.
2. Girls and boys often enjoy playing the same sport. Some people believe that girls and
boys should be able to play on the same team. What is your opinion on this issue? Write
an essay stating your opinion and supporting it with convincing reasons. Be sure to
explain your reasons in detail.
3. It has been said that television has little real educational value. What is your opinion on
this issue? Write an essay stating your opinion and supporting it with convincing reasons.
Be sure to explain your reasons in detail.
4. Suppose Congress wants to make a new national holiday honoring an important person or
event. Choose a person or event you would like to honor. Write an essay that will
convince members of Congress to accept your choice.
5. Your principal has asked students to suggest a school rule that should be changed. Think
of one rule that you would like to have changed. Write an essay that will convince your
principal that this rule should be changed. Be sure to support your opinion with
convincing reasons and evidence.
6. Your school principal is considering a new policy that will require all students to wear
uniforms. What is your position concerning this issue? Write an essay stating your
position and supporting it with convincing reasons. Be sure to explain your reasons in
detail.

Organization
- Include a strong introduction paragraph that begins with a grabber, describes the issue, and
ends with a 3-point thesis statement
- Use the 3-point thesis statement to guide your body paragraphs.
- Begin each body paragraph with a topic sentence that relates back to your thesis statement.
- Support your topic sentences with relevant and reasonable details
Ideas/Content
- Remember your audience. Who are you attempting to reach?
- Anticipate the counter-argument. Your argument gains power when you acknowledge the
opposition and effectively refute it.
- Use persuasive language.
- Citing experts add power and strength to your positions.
Sentence Fluency
- Read your essay out loud. Youll be able to hear fluency problems.
- Keep it simple!
Voice/Word Choice
- Use specific, persuasive language.
Conventions:
- Keep verb tense consistent
- First person is acceptable when writing a persuasive piece. Be careful not to overuse it!
- Even though you are writing about your opinion, the tone of the paper should be formal. Avoid
slang.
- Remember that sentence fragments and run-on sentences impact fluency.
- If you cite experts, include in-text citations and a works cited page.
Presentation
- The paper should be 1 to 3 pages long.
- Double space
- Use Times New Roman font, size 12
- Type your name and the date in the top right corner of the first page.
- On the second or third page, type your last name and the page number separated by a hyphen in
the top right corner.
- Proofread! Use spell check!
