Executive Summary

Our ENV107 Lab class was conducted on 14th June 2016. The experiments and discussion
solely focused on water quality. Experiment was conducted on 6 samples of water from different
sources (MUM, NSU, Shantinagar, Distilled water, Sea water, Turag River) to initially test the
quality of water for each of the samples.
Before conducting the experiments, it was explained that, generally no presence of color, smell
and turbidity initially explains that the quality of water is better than the water that consists
smell, color and turbidity. The main factors that were to be considered are pH Level in the water,
level of Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Electricity Conductivity (EC), Total Dissolved Solids
(TDS).The standards for each of these factors were given and they are stated in the following
table.

Factors

Standards

1. pH Level

6.5-8.5

2. Dissolved Oxygen (DO)

4.5-8.5 (mg/l=ppm)

3. Electricity Conductivity(EC)

</= 250 ms/cm

4. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)

100 (mg/l=ppm)

Interpretations:

Generally, to test water, 3 properties are taken into account, namely Physical Property
(Color, Smell, Turbidity), Chemical Property and Microbiological Property. This test that was
conducted had no scope of finding micro-organisms.
From the results of the given table, it can be concluded that NSU water has a good balance of
all the factors compared to that of other sources and next stands MUM, according to the
given standards.
On the other hand, Sea water sample and Turag River water sample has TDS which amounts
way beyond the given standard.. High TDS levels may indicate elevated levels of ions that
may pose a health concern, such as arsenic, agricultural or industrial chemicals, etc. These
sources also have the presence of high level Electricity Conductivity which indicates high
level of salinity. If the water contains very large amounts of solutes and ions, then the water
becomes such an efficient conductor of electricity

Dissolved oxygen refers to the level of free, non-compound oxygen present in water or other
liquids .In water, dissolved oxygen is an essential factor for aquatic life and water quality.
A dissolved oxygen level that is too high or too low can harm aquatic life and affect water
quality. Turag lake water sample consists the least amount of Dissolved Oxygen, which is as
low as .15 compared to the given standard of (4.5-8.5 mgdl=ppm). This may mean that, it
greatly affects aquatic life in it as well the water quality.
