Assignment 1

1) What assumptions were made in the derivation of the design equation for:
a) the batch reactor?
b) the CSTR?
c) the plug-flow reactor (PFR)?
d) the packed-bed reactor (PBR)?
e) State in words the meanings of -rA,. rA; . and rA . Is the reaction rate -rA,
an extensive quantity'! Explain.
2) Consider the liquid phase cis- and trans- isomerization of 2-butene is written symbolically
as in the following equation:
AB
If the volumetric flow rate is 10 dm3/min and the reaction rate, k , is 0.23 min-1, calculate the
time to reduce the number of moles of A to 1% of its initial value in a constant-volume batch
reactor for the reaction.
3) Use the mole balance to derive an equation analogous to Equation ( 1-7) for n fluidized
CSTR containing catalyst particles in terms of catalyst weight, W and other
appropriate terms. Hint: see the given figure.
