Introduction
Growing Pechay (Brasicca rapa) is an annual biennial herb.
The leaves are smooth, 30 cm long, broad at the tip narrowing
gradually at the base extending downward to the upper end of its
elongated, thick and whitish stalks. The leaves are erect,
flowers are pale. Using organic farming in planting pechay is
difficult to manage. Maintaining moisture content, application of
organic fertilizers, removal of weeds, grasses and other debris
is difficult to attain. Due to pechay plant who are sensitive
when it comes to vegetative stage. This study focuses on the
result in applying organic fertilizers in pechay wherein it
affects the size and growth of pechay. Organi fertizers gives
soil nutrients and absorbed by plants for them to complete their
photosynthetic processes or life period. But climate change is
one who affects the growth of different life stages of pechay.
Maintaining of 30-40 days pechay will be harvested, but due to
changes of our climate pechay dont favor to grow well because
its favorable climate is cold climate and in shady areas wherin
they can not expose to direct sunlight.
Farming methods like growing pechay is needed by the
community . Through this, our community will try organic farming
which uses all organic materials that can not affect our
surroundings. And for them to be aware that using organic
farming, production of crops increased.

Objectives

To produce good quality of pechay using organic fertilizer.


To promote the development of organic farming.
To identify pests and natural enemies.

Review of Related Literature


When selecting pechay, look for heads with light green,
crisp leaves. The fresher the pechay, the higher the nutrient
content. Before you eat pechay, remove the leaves from the core
and soak them in a bowl of cool water with a splash of white
vinegar. Rinse them under running water after three minutes of
soaking. This process kills bacteria and removes potential
pesticides or dirt. Like most leafy vegetables, pechay loses some
of its nutritional value when cooked. Eat it raw for the highest

level of nutrients. One serving of pechay is 1 cup of chopped


leaves, or about 3.8 ounces.
Loaded With Vitamins
One cup of raw, shredded pechay has 20.5 milligrams of
vitamin C, 60 micrograms of folate and 32.6 micrograms of vitamin
K, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture National
Nutrient Database. The serving of pechay also has small amounts
of other vitamins such as vitamin A, niacin and vitamin B-6.
Vitamin C Improves Your Immune System
Ensuring your diet is high in vitamin C helps your body
fight free radical damage and build a stronger immune system. One
serving of pechay provides a significant percentage of your
recommended dietary allowance of vitamin C. Men should get 90 and
women should get 75 milligrams of this vitamin in their diet
daily. One cup of pechay provides about 22 percent of the RDA for
men and about 27 percent of the RDA for women. Pregnant women
should have 85 milligrams and breast-feeding women should have
120 milligrams. One cup provides about 24 and 17 percent,
respectively, of the RDA for these two demographics.
Folate's Role in Healthy Cells
Folate contributes to the production of DNA and plays a role
in cell division. Adults should get 400 micrograms of this B
vitamin per day; pregnant women need 600 micrograms, and breastfeeding women need 500 micrograms daily. Although most Americans
get enough folate in their diets, it's especially important for
pregnant teenage girls and women, or those who are planning to
get pregnant, to consume this vitamin. One cup of pechay provides
15 percent of the recommended amount for adults, 10 percent of
the RDA for pregnant women and 12 percent of the recommendation
of breast-feeding women.
Vitamin K and Bone Strength
Getting enough vitamin K contributes to the clotting of your
blood and might also help to strengthen your bones as you age. If
you're deficient in this vitamin, you have a greater risk of
developing bruises. Adults should get 90 micrograms of vitamin K
in their diets per day. One cup of pechay provides about 36
percent of the daily recommended amount.

Methodology

Climatic and Soil Requirements


Pechay can be grown from low to mid elevations throughout the
year. Production is best, however, during the dry season in sandy
to clay loam soil, with a pH of 5.5-6.5.
Planting
A1-ha production area requires kg seeds.
Pechay can either be sown directly in soil or transplanted.
Direct seeding is carried out by broadcasting or by sowing in
rows. Cover seeds to a depth of about 1 cm by raking or spreading
additional topsoil. Water immediately after sowing. Plant spacing
should be 10 cm between plants and 20 cm between rows.
If transplanted, sow seeds initially in seedbeds. Transplant
seedlings 2-3 weeks after sowing at a distance of 10 cm between
plants and 20 cm between rows. Transplant preferably in the
afternoon and water immediately. Mulch with grass clippings
or rice straw.
Fertilization
Apply seedlings with starter solution using urea (46-0-0) at
the rate of 2 tbsp/gal of water. Side-dress along the rows at the
rate of 1 tbsp/plant one week after transplanting.
Pest and Disease Management
Damping-off, soft rot and clubroot are the most important
diseases of pechay, while diamondback moth and aphids are the
major insect pests. Spraying hot pepper extract can control these
pests. When seedlings begin to wilt, reduce watering immediately.
Uproot and burn disease-infected plants to prevent spread of
diseases. Cultivation is also necessary to minimize weeds.
Harvesting
Harvest as early as three weeks after planting or between
30-40 days after sowing. Harvest preferably in the afternoon to
minimize postharvest losses.Upon harvesting, wash the plants,
trim old leaves and remove roots. Grade according to size and
quality, and pack in strong rigid containers with holes at the
sides to allow aeration. Pack with the base of the plant to the
sides of the baskets. Maintain turgidity by lining the basket
with paper.

We harvested 5.42 kilos of our pechay. This results to the


application of organic fertizers which is our study. For that
result 1.5 meters 5 meters, we conducted that study in which
the productivity is high.

Conclusion
Therefore applying organic fertilizers in pechay has an
increase in result and by that it is safe and it dont affect our
surroundings. And we able to determine the different pest that
attacks our pechay and the natural enemies itself. Having time to
visit is one of the reason why pechay favors to grow. As we go
organic farming, helping our world to be better and safe.
