    CHARACTER ANALYSIS FOR VOCAL INTERPREATION AND

    PERFORMANCE
    YOUR NAME: James Smith
    NAME OF CHARACTER: Sweeney Todd/ Benjamin Barker
    NAME OF PLAY: Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
    WHO?
    AGE: 41
    HEALTH: I am not the healthiest as I have been in jail for the last
    15 years in Australia, and I have been travelling on the boat for
    more than a month. I havent been eating the best, and have
    been sick a lot during the last couple years.
    FAMILY AND SOCIAL BACKGROUND: I was the youngest in my
    family while growing up. I had an older brother and sister. My
    parents were middle class, and my mother was a stay at home
    mom, while my dad owned a barber shop above our place making
    money for us. My family was well known around this part of
    London. We had made a name for our shop, and got along with
    everyone. When I was a teenager, my family was supposed to
    head out on a trip to North England to go to my cousins wedding,
    and the fastest way to get there was a boat. But I ended up not
    going as I missed the boat and I was in love with this girl I just
    met named Lucy. I didnt want to leave her as we would be gone
    for 1 month. My family ended up never returning leaving me
    alone. I ended up writing to my other family in North England and
    they said that the ship had never made it. This forced me to take
    over the barber shop so I could make money. I was so lost with
    losing my family and the only person I had to turn too was Lucy.
    We ended up getting married, which made me very happy as I
    loved Lucy a lot, and felt she really cared about me, and also my
    family never coming back home.

    GEOGRAPHIC BIRTH AND UPBRINGING: I grew up in London,


    England on Fleet Street. This is where I have lived my entire life.
    When I was around 25, I was committed a crime that I did not do,
    so I got sent to the jail in Australia. This was my first time out of
    the country.
    MENTAL CONDITION: Unstable, as I have been sent away to jail in
    Australia for 15 years for committing a crime I didnt even do.
    EDUCATION: Not much, was home schooled from my mother.
    VOCATION: Barber before I went away to Australia, and when I
    came back I started becoming a barber
    AVOCATIONS: Drinking ale, killing innocent people so I can give
    their meat to Mrs. Lovetts, walking to streets to find Judge Turpin
    or the Beadle.
    MILITARY EXPERIENCE: none, we were never in a time for war
    when I was in England.
    FINANCIAL CIRCUMSTANCES: I had money before I went to jail in
    Australia, but when I came back to England I end up having
    nothing at all.
    YOUR ESSENCE: Dark, miserable, creepy
    WHO ARE THE OTHER PEOPLE IN THE SCENE? Mrs. Lovetts (Nellie)
    HOW DO YOU SPEAK TO THEM AND BEHAVE TOWARD THEM? I
    speak to her as I am higher authority, and behave toward her that
    I dont really care about her. I just want to know where my wife
    and daughter are, and when I find out my wife is dead, and my
    daughter has been adopted by my worst enemy, Judge Turpin,
    then I really only care about getting revenge on Turpin, and using
    Mrs. Lovetts along the way.
    HOW THEY SPEAK AND BEHAVE TOWARD YOU? She speaks to me
    as I am her friend, and that we have known each for a while.
    HOW DOES THAT AFFECT (OR REFLECT) YOUR THOUGHTS, YOUR
    FEELINGS, YOUR WORDS AND YOUR ACTIONS? This affects my

    thoughts because I just want to be reunited with my family, as I


    have went through a hard time with my family all my life. I lost
    my mom, dad, sister and brother when I was teenager, and now I
    cant be with my wife and daughter after 15 years. This is making
    me go crazy, and the only thing I care about is being with them. I
    will do anything to get be with them again, such as kill Judge
    Turpin.

    WHAT?
    WHAT IS THE EVENT (THE HAPPENING OR THE OCCASION) IN
    WHICH YOU FIND YOURSELF? I have just got off the boat, and
    came to my old house to see if my wife and daughter are there.
    WHAT HAPPENS IN THE COURSE OF THIS EVENT? I go inside my
    house, which has now turned into a pie shop and I see Mrs.
    Lovetts working there. She tells me my wife has died, and my
    daughter is adopted by Judge Turpin. She ends up giving me my
    razors back from when I was a barber before I left.
    WHAT DO YOU EXPECT TO HAPPEN? I expect my wife and
    daughter to be excited that I am back home.
    WHAT DO YOU WANT TO HAPPEN? I want to be reunited with my
    family.
    WHAT ACTUALLY OCCURS? They arent there. My wife has
    poisoned herself, and my daughter is now adopted by Judge
    Turpin.
    WHAT ARE THE NON HUMAN ELEMENTS IN THIS ENVIRONMENT,
    INCLUDING ANIMATE AND INANIMATE OBJECTS, ARCHITECTURE
    AND FURNISHINGS, MECHANICAL OBJECTS AND EVERY OTHER
    THING YOU ARE USING, WEARING, CARRYING OR OTHERWISE

    EXPERIENCING? We are in Mrs. Lovetts pie shop. Its very dark in


    here with wooden walls, wooden furniture, and a black stove. Its
    very dusty in here, with a lot of cobwebs and insects. On the
    counter, there is a rolling pin, moldy dough, pies, and knives.
    Behind the counter there is a black stove. And a door to go back
    to where the rest of the house is. In front of the counter, there is a
    table with stools in front of it for customers to eat their pies.
    There is a huge window in front of the tables, so all the people on
    the street can see the pie shop. The outside I am wearing white
    button up with black pants, and boots. Mrs. Lovetts is wearing a
    black dress with a white apron. The pie shop is very plain, and
    dirty, and all just one colour. When Mrs. Lovetts gets my razors,
    she brings it to me in a wooden box. My razors have white
    handles, and are very shiny. They havent been used in years.
    HOW DOES THAT AFFECT YOUR THOUGHTS, YOUR FEELINGS,
    YOUR WORDS AND YOUR ACTIONS? This makes my words very
    limited. I dont say much, and I ignore Mrs. Lovetts a lot. I cant
    believe what I have just heard and its taking a lot for me to
    handle this.
    WHERE?
    WHERE IS THE EVENT? Mrs. Lovetts Pie shop
    WHAT NATION? England
    WHAT REGION? London
    INDOORS OR OUTDOORS? Indoors
    WET WEATHER OR DRY? Dry, but some rain has leaked into the
    shop as it hasnt been kept up over the years.
    COMFORTABLE TEMPERATURE OR UNCOMFORTABLE?
    Uncomfortable. The temperature is really hot in here from all the
    pies.
    PUBLIC OR PRIVATE? Public. There is a huge window into the pie
    shop from the street.

    FORMAL OR INFORMAL? Informal


    PLEASANT OR UNPLEASANT? Unpleasant. The pie shop smells,
    and it is very hot in here.
    FAMILIAR OR UNFAMILIAR? Familiar. I have grew up in this house,
    which is now turned into a pie shop.
    SAFE OR DANGEROUS? Dangerous, I know if Judge Turpin sees me
    he would send me back to jail. Thats why I gave myself a new
    name as Sweeney Todd.
    HOW DO THOSE ELEMENTS AFFECT YOUR THOUGHTS, YOUR
    FEELINGS, YOUR WORDS AND YOUR ACTIONS? This affects me as I
    am finally home, and my family is not here. This destroys me. I
    dont know what to do, as I have suffered the last 15 years
    without being with them.

    WHEN?
    THE YEAR? 1842
    THE TIME OF YEAR? It is in October.
    THE TIME OF DAY? Around 2pm.
    THE DAY OR DATE OR MOMENT OF PARTICULAR SIGNIFICANCE?
    Sunday October 12th 1842
    HOW DOES THAT AFFECT YOUR THOUGHTS, YOUR FEELINGS,
    YOUR WORDS AND YOUR ACTIONS? This affects my thoughts,
    because I have been locked away for 15 years, and I have been
    locked away for so long that I am bitter about being back home. I
    also havent seen my family for 15 years, so I just want to see
    them and be reunited.
    WHY?

    WHY ARE YOU THERE YOUR REASONS AND NOT THE REASONS
    OF OTHERS? I am here because I have been released from prison.
    I was locked away for 15 years and I got out on good terms. I
    came back here to be reunited with my family. I gave myself a
    new name so that when I came back to England, no one would
    know I am back. I look different from 15 years ago, and my hair is
    much longer. I have also gained some weight. I changed my
    name because I know if Judge Turpin knows I am back from jail he
    would send me back in a heartbeat.
