Narrative Structures

An open narrative is when there are usually many characters and no

foreseeable ending. This means that it could go on forever.
Furthermore there are many more characters and they all change in
the importance of the drama following the story line. As there are
many characters there isnt one single story line as it continuously
change. The story line is always in chronological order as it goes
along with time. An example of this is Toy Story.

A closed narrative when there is a voice telling the audience what

the character is thinking about. These thoughts are only expressed
for the main characters; this is because there are only a couple of
them. These characters arranged in order from the most important
main character to the least. As there is a voice the audience is able
to understand what the character is thinking about throughout the
whole film. An example of this is Thor.

One the other hand a multi-strand narrative can have two or more
isolated groups of characters existing at once. This is because there
are several storylines within one film; this is why the audience will
not only be concerned about the action and outcome of each strand.
Instead they have a concern with how the strands relate to one
another. An example of this is Avengers.

A point of view (POV) narrative is when there is a narrator who tells

the story without revealing what the characters thoughts and
opinions are. They do this by giving an unbiased point of view so
that the audience can decide for themselves what the character is
thinking and what the outcome of the film will be. An example of
this is Forest Gump.

Plot devices

Plot twist: A plot twist is a unexpected change in the story which

complete effects thye rest of the movie.

Deus ex machina: A character or thing that suddenly enters the film

and solves a problem that had previously seemed impossible to
solve.

Red herring: In a film it is something unimportant that is used to

stop people from noticing or thinking about something important.

In media res: This is when something in the middle of the narrative.
