set another
milestone on Friday, 12th August 2011 when over 20 lakh people traveled on the Metro throughout the day. This was
the first time that DMRC carried over 20 lakh (Two Million) passengers on a single day. Thus, fulfilling DMRC
Managing Director, Dr E Sreedharans dream of achieving this magical figure a good five months ahead of his
projected target of December 2011.
Delhi Metro recorded the highest ever ridership figure of 20, 66,925 on 12th August 2011, which surpassed the earlier
record set on 01st August 2011, when 18, 30,944 people traveled by the Metro. For the last two months, Delhi Metro
has been registering an increased ridership. The average daily ridership which used to be 14 lakh in May 2011
jumped to 15 lakh in June 2011 and further to over 16 lakh in July 2011.
The Delhi Metro network which was just 87 kms in January 2010 added another 110 kms in a period of over next one
year and has been considered as one of the fastest Metro expansion in the world. DMRC today spans over a network
of 187 Kms and 143 Metro stations including the Airport Line. The daily operations of Metro from January 2010 to till
date has also increased manifold and it was repeatedly ensured by Dr E Sreedharan that the city continues to get one
of the most punctual, reliable and comfortable Metro system in the world. In its efforts, the Delhi Metro not only
increased the peak hour frequency to an all time high of 2.3 minutes but also kept on increasing the length of trains
from four coaches to six coaches. The process of converting four to six coach trains started in December 2010 and till
date 74 six coach trains are running on Line 1, 2, 3 and 4, out of a total pool of 200 train sets. This has enabled
DMRC in ensuring that more and more commuters are now using Metro comfortably in reaching out to their
destinations in Delhi-NCR region. Another 26 six coach trains will be added by the end of December 2011.
On Friday, Metros each of the six lines grossed highest ridership in individual capacity too. The linewise breakup of
ridership for 12th August 2011 is given below:
25-Dec-02
(Metro started its
114,835 1 Lakh
operations on this
day)
The above figures indicate the addition of over three lakh passengers in a short span of two months and growing
popularity of DMRC as a well trusted Mass Rapid Transport System in the country. In fact, DMRC has added over five
lakh passengers in last one year i.e, from September 2010 to August 2011.
