Describe what makes you happy and explain why.

It is human nature to long for a happy life. Carrying out activities that we enjoy
bring us happiness and joy. There are a lot of things that make me happy and the
top three are hanging out with my family and friends, reading and spending time
with my pet cat Ginger.

I come from a medium-sized family that comprises five members. My elder

brother and sister are married and currently residing in Singapore and Australia
respectively. My parents are real joys to me as they are both loving and caring.
When my older siblings come back home during the holidays, all of us would go
on a sightseeing tour of the tourist attractions in Malaysia. Since we have strong
family ties, we not only share our happy moments but assist one another to solve
problems too.

I enjoy hanging out with my intimate friends or BFFs - Zoe, Kate and Mia. On a
typical Saturday or holiday, we visit the library to borrow books. We then head
for the swimming pool, where we have a lot of fun playing and laughing. After
that, we go to a shopping center to have lunch, shop, and possibly watch the
latest film. We usually hang out until evening as that makes us happy and
relaxed.

Reading is one of the hobbies that I enjoy the most. Through reading the
newspaper, I not only know what is happening all over my home country but also
abroad. Apart from that, I am also able to improve my language standards and
perform better in examinations. Besides the papers, I also enjoy reading
storybooks with captivating plots. Mystery and detective novels with interesting
and unpredictable plots totally engross me. To me, reading is both entertaining
and rewarding.

Due to the fact the I have a soft spot for animals, especially cats, spending time
with my pet cat Ginger gives me a lot of pleasure. I found him under my fathers
car one morning about two years ago. Mewing pitifully, he appeared skinny and
hungry. I took pity on him and fed him some food. After his meal, I bathed him. I
was glad that my mother allowed me to keep Ginger, which turned out to be an
affectionate cat. Besides that, he is also a close companion and an excellent
hunter.

I am glad to be blessed with my family, friends and cat. I consider myself

fortunate and I enjoy every quality moment that I spend with them. I will most
probably continue to pursue the hobby of reading as it is extremely beneficial.
Since my life would be boring without them, I will always cherish them.

Social networking has caused a lot of problems. How far do you agree?

Social networking, which is also known as social media, is the use of internet-
based applications to make connections with people such as our family and
friends. It is now becoming an important part of our lives. In order to keep pace
with the advancement of technology, almost all of us have learnt how to use
social networking websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat.
Despite its popularity, is it true that social networking has caused us a lot of
problems?

In my opinion, social networking has its advantages and disadvantages. It

actually depends on how we use it.

I believe that social media benefits us because it brings people closer even
though they are from different parts of the world. By using social networking, a
person can communicate with his family and friends wherever they are.
Furthermore, social networking sites are basically free of charge. It is extremely
user friendly and can be used wherever there is internet access. By comparison,
it is more economical than making telephone calls. We are able to share our life
stories and special moments through social networking. For instance, we can see
photos of beautiful scenery and cultural activities posted by users from different
countries. We can also interact with them through the use of chat rooms and also
by posting comments and messages.

Another benefit of social networking is that like-minded people all over the world
are able to discuss important topics and share their points of view. This can
widen a persons personal knowledge as he can discover different things that he
never knew. For example, young people around the world are now more involved
in their countries politics. They also have a more caring attitude towards other
important issues both at home and abroad.
Just as everything has its pros and cons, social networking is no exception. One
of the problems it has caused us is that it allows us to hide behind the screens.
That limits face to face interaction among people. Some of us might think that it
is good enough to be sociable simply through the use of social networking. This
could result in the lack of communication and interpersonal skills when we come
face to face with people. In addition, we tend to neglect the importance of
building a good relationship with friends that we make through social media. For
instance, users can have thousands of friends in their Facebook friends lists, but
how many of them do they see on a semi-regular basis?

Moreover, social networking has taken too much out of our lives. A lot people are
busy with Facebooking or Tweeting instead of interacting with their friends and
family when meeting up. When their elders are talking to them, they are busy
with their social networking sites and tend to ignore their elders. Such insolence
is prevalent especially among todays younger generation. Apart from that,
another serious problem which social media has caused us is distraction. For
example, while studying, students may decide to catch up with Youtube videos or
update their Twitter accounts. This causes concentration problems and
consequently has a negative effect on the students academic performance. The
similar situation is also not uncommon among workers who are on duty. This can
result in their superiors distrust of them.

In conclusion, I agree to a certain extent that social networking has caused a lot
of problems. If it is misused or used in an improper manner, problems can arise.
On the other hand, it can be a useful tool to people from all walks of life if it is
used in an appropriate manner.

Why is having good neighbours important?

Neighbours are people who live next door or near to us. If we live in a
neighbourhood with good neighbours, we are fortunate and blessed. Good
neighbours are extremely helpful and make our stay safer and more enjoyable.
I am lucky to live in a neighbourhood with mostly good neighbours. My whole
family is very close to our next-door neighbours. Just like our family, theirs is
comprised of four members - Encik Ramlan, his wife Puan Aini, his daughter
Fatim and his son Asraf. Fatim and Astraf are in the same age group as me and
my brother. Every evening and weekend, we play together and there is never a
dull moment. We often study together and help one another with our homework
too. In the mornings, our mothers visit the market together. After that, they go
jogging in the park. Since our fathers share the same hobby of fishing, they go
fishing at weekends by a river which is nearby our houses.

Good neighbours can be helpful as well. When my family are away on holidays,
we request our neighbours to keep an eye on our house. They are also willing to
help us water our plants and feed our pets. Neighbours are better than relatives
that live far away is a Chinese proverb that explains the importance of having
good neighbours. Due to the fact that they live in close proximity to us and
spend more time with us, they are more intimate to us. Naturally, they can offer
us better assistance when we face problems.

During the previous school holidays while we were visiting my grandparents in a

village, a burglar attempted to break in our house. It was about midnight and
Fatim was doing her holiday assignment by the window of her room when she
heard rustling noises from our house. Upon looking out of the window, she saw a
burglar trying to prise open a window of our house. At once, she raced
downstairs. Her parents, who were watching television in the living room, were
quite surprised to see her in such a hurry. After informing them what was
transpiring, Encik Ramlan called the police immediately. When the policemen
arrived, the burglar had broken in our house and was ransacking it. The
policemen acted professionally and apprehended the burglar successfully within
ten minutes. We were extremely grateful to them for their benevolence.

Having good neighbours is important because it makes our life in a

neighbourhood safer, happier and more fun. We also tend to have more peace of
mind. Although we can choose our friends but not our neighbours, we must
remember that we get what we give. As the saying goes, do unto others as you
would have them do unto you. Therefore, we should at least try to be good
neighbours in order to build good relationships with our neighbours.

Honesty is the best policy.

Describe an experience when this was true for you.

The proverb honesty is the best policy advises people that it is better to tell the
truth than to lie. I have always believed in the proverb. When I was about eleven
years old, my honesty saved two friends lives.

Charlotte has been my best friend since we were very young. We are extremely
intimate and do everything together. Her father passed on when she was three
years of age and she lives with her mother and elder sister. Since the demise of
her father, her mother is the sole breadwinner of the family. Although Charlottes
mother does all she could to bring up Charlotte and her sister, Charlotte tells me
that her mother is extremely strict with them. At times, she is so harsh that they
find it hard to accept her ways.

Unfortunately one day, Charlotte and her sister had a big argument with their
mother. The next day, Charlotte told me that she and her sister planned to run
away from home. I felt really uneasy about their plan. I persuaded them against
running away and to think twice before they acted. In spite of my persuasion,
Charlotte told me that they had already made up their mind. When I asked her
where they were planning to stay, she replied to say that they would stay at the
abandoned house at the edge of the forest. She also said that I could go and visit
them but I must not tell anyone about their hiding place. She also sworn me to
secrecy.

That very night, Charlotte and her sister ran away from home when their mother
was sound asleep. The next day when she discovered that they were missing,
she was worried sick. Apprehensive about their safety, she lodged a police
report. The police formed a search party to search for the sisters but their efforts
were in vain. In desperation, she asked me whether I knew where they were.
Although I did, I said I had no idea of their whereabouts in order to keep the
promise that I made to the sisters. Their mother was disappointed at my reply
and I felt guilty about lying to her.

The following day, I went to visit Charlotte and her sister. It was a wet morning as
it had been drizzling since daybreak. Upon arriving at the place, I was taken
aback to see the bad state of the dilapidated wooden house, which stood in a
bleak and desolate landscape. Many parts of the house were rotten and its roof
was leaky. The sisters, who appeared to be pale, were glad to see me. Even
though they were tired, weak, thirsty and hungry, they pretended that they were
happy to live in the house.

After visiting them, I felt sorry about their living conditions. Although I promised
to bring them some food and drinks, I went to see their mother instead. I
apologised to her and told her the truth. All at once, the huge weight of keeping
the secret and lying were lifted off my shoulders. Their mother could not be more
grateful to me. Accompanied by the police and me, she went to fetch her
daughters from the house. By the time we reached there, the sisters were almost
dying of dehydration and starvation.

Albeit Charlotte was angry with me for breaking the promise, she eventually
forgave me and realised that I was actually doing the right thing. She and her
sister thanked me for doing them a favour and saving their lives. Their mother
promised to be more reasonable and she does live up to her promise. Until
today, I still believe that honesty is the best policy.

Describe an important family celebration

and how you felt about it.

Last Saturday, my family had an important celebration. It was my fathers

birthday and we celebrated the special occasion by throwing a surprise party for
him. A week prior to the party, we secretly invited our relatives and my fathers
friends to the party.

In the afternoon of my fathers birthday, my elder brother Brian requested our

father to take him shopping in a shopping centre to buy some sports gear. Our
father had no idea that it was just a pretext to get him out of the house. While
they were away, my mother, younger brother Austin and I started to get ready
for the party at home. After decorating the living room with crepe paper and
balloons, we went to a bakery to fetch the birthday cake that we ordered a few
days earlier. Not long after we reached home, the caterers arrived and started to
set up the food in no time.

About an hour later, the guests started arriving. Just then, Brian called to inform
our mother that he and our father would be coming home soon. Mother told him
to stay in the shopping centre a bit longer as not all the guests had arrived yet.
Brian said that he would try his best. After all the guests had arrived, all of us hid
excitedly and waited for their return. Within moments, we heard a car parking,
followed by people walking towards the front door.

You havent been a good son today, have you? my father complained in a
slightly cross tone of voice. He then took out the door key from his trouser
pocket. Inserting it into the keyhole, he continued, You know that I dislike
shopping, especially for long hours. And yet you dragged me all over the
shopping centre. In the end, you bought nothing. Im so tired now.

After my father had turned the key and opened the door, all of us jumped out of
our hiding places and shouted, Surprise! My father was quite flabbergasted to
see so many people in our beautifully decorated living room. For a while, he was
dumbfounded. When he had recovered from his shock, he laughed heartily and
exclaimed, OMG! Its my birthday today. I shouldve seen this coming!

Realising why Brian had taken him all over the shopping centre, he punched
Brians arm playfully and said that he was not a bad son that day after all. All of
us laughed and conveyed our birthday greetings to him. After he had talked to
the guests, the food was served. Next, he cut the cake and served it to everyone
as dessert.

After the meal, all of us gave my father birthday gifts. Before the party ended,
my father made a short speech to thank all the guests for coming and also for
their presents. He also expressed that the greatest gift he had ever received is
his family. Everyone of us applauded.
I love surprise parties and this is the best that I have ever had so far. I was happy
to see my father having such an enjoyable time at the party, not to mention the
delicious food served. Although I was glad to celebrate my fathers birthday, I felt
a little sadness as he had grown a year older and the number of his grey hairs
had increased.

My father has sacrificed so much for the well-being of our family and I love him
dearly. As the only daughter of my family, I want him to be by my side, to be
there for me forever. But I know that this is impossible. Anyway, I wish him
nothing but happiness, health, longevity and many happy returns of the day.

There is a lack of freedom given to teenagers today.

Do you agree?

The majority of teenagers today complain that they are not given sufficient
freedom. Despite their complaints, I believe that teenagers are given more than
adequate freedom. Since teenagers are still dependent on their parents, too
much freedom can be bad for them.

There are many parents who are careerists nowadays. As they are too busy
working, they can hardly stay home to monitor their children. Teenagers often
take advantage of their parents absence to hang out with friends, watch
television, play video games, et cetera. Rather than studying and doing their
homework, they also spend too much time on social networking websites. Since
they have a lot of freedom and barely anyone to supervise them, they tend to
neglect their studies. Their negligence usually have an adverse effect on their
academic performance.

A lot of parents have no idea who their children hang out with. There is a Chinese
proverb which highlights the fact that spending time with decent friends
influences us positively while mixing with bad friends influences us negatively.
When teenagers socialise with true and sincere friends with positive character
traits, their parents minds are put at ease. On the other hand, if they spend time
with undesirable friends with ulterior motives, they can get into serious trouble.
They can be cajoled into doing things that are harmful to their health such as
smoking, drinking and doing drugs. They can also be pressurised into doing
things that are morally unacceptable like gambling and committing crimes,
among many other instances.

Teenagers today are also given a lot of freedom to work and earn their own
money. While working at a young age is beneficial to them as they can learn
about responsibility and the value of money, they may also spend their hard-
earned money on inappropriate things like cigarettes and drugs. Whether or not
teenagers can cultivate good spending habits actually depends on their
upbringing. Thus, parents who teach their children well about good values
normally do not have much apprehension about the way they spend.
Unfortunately, many boys and girls in their teens are provided with too much
freedom when it comes to spending. As a consequence, they spend their money
however they want and often end up making bad choices.

Excessive freedom is also given to teenage children to surf the Internet. While it
is true that they are able to learn about many beneficial things, the opposite is
also true. They can, for example, encounter bad or unsavoury characters who are
capable of swindling and even harming them. Due to the fact that teenagers are
still young, immature and innocent, they are more vulnerable to tricks and
scams.

In a nutshell, I disagree that there is a lack of freedom given to teenagers today.

Although teenagers need a certain amount of freedom to grow and experience
life appropriately, too much of it is definitely unfavourable to them. Since
teenagers freedom is generally controlled by their parents, the latter should
monitor and adjust the amount accordingly so as to maximise the benefits to the
former.

A friend in need is a friend indeed.

Describe how a friend helped you in difficult time.

The first of May last year is indeed a memorable day for me as it is the day
Sarah, my best friend, lent me a helping hand in a difficult time.
Since that day was a public holiday, Sarah came to my house so that we could do
our geography project together. As the saying goes, two heads are better than
one. My parents had gone out to attend to some urgent business then. While we
were busy doing our project, my younger brother Liam was playing outside our
house. All of a sudden, Sarah and I heard Liam screaming in pain. Astonished to
hear the scream, we ran out of the house to check on him. To our horror, Liam
had fallen into the drain outside our house. As the drain was quite deep, he was
having trouble getting out of it.

Panick-stricken, I did not know what to do and felt like crying. Just when I was
about to cry, Sarah calmed me down. She suggested that she would call the
ambulance and I would call my parents. I nodded in agreement. As promised, she
called an ambulance at once while I called my parents. Upon knowing what had
transpired, my parents were extremely anxious about Liam. They decided to
come home immediately.

While we were waiting for the arrival of the ambulance, Sarah and I talked to
Liam and comforted him. Seated on the bottom of the drain, Liams legs seemed
to be in great pain. He begged us to take him out. As much as I wanted to help
him, Sarah advised me against it. She said it was better to let the paramedics lift
him out as he might be suffering from broken bone injuries and we might
deteriorate the condition. I believed Sarah was right and felt really sorry for Liam,
who was crying bitterly. Sarah ensured him that help would arrive soon. To
distract him and alleviate his sufferings, she told him humorous stories.

Not long after, an ambulance arrived and so did my parents. The paramedics did
their job in a professional manner and lifted Liam out of the drain without injuring
him any further. He was then rushed to hospital. After my father had driven the
rest of us to hospital, the doctor informed us that both of Liams legs were
broken and he had to be hospitalised for treatment. But since he was young, his
legs should recover quickly with no permanent damage. Our tension were
assuaged by the doctors report and we heaved a sigh of relief.

I conveyed my gratitude to Sarah for her help. She said that was what friends
were for - both good times and bad times. Her assistance strengthened our
friendship ties and we hope to remain as best friends forever.

Truly Malaysian. Describe what this means to you.

Being citizens of our beloved country - Malaysia, we should be truly Malaysian
not only in our feelings but also in our actions. Different Malaysians have
different opinions regarding the meaning of truly Malaysian. To me, being truly
Malaysian means portraying the Malaysian spirit wherever I am.

Being truly Malaysian is about showing respect and being loyal to the country. I
should fight to bring glory to the country and be proud to be a citizen of
Malaysia. A true Malaysian also obeys the rules and laws of the country. I will act
with dignity wherever I am and follow and teach others that rules are there for
the good of the people and country.

Besides that, being kind to our fellow Malaysians reflects the truly Malaysian
spirit. We will not tarnish the countrys good reputation by being disrespectful or
hateful to one another. We must also respect other peoples views and opinions
and avoid putting down others to make ourselves feel better.

As citizens of the country that is renowned for its multi-racial society, true
Malaysians should also respect the different customs and cultures of one
anothers races. We should also have the interest to find out and learn more
about one anothers ways of life so as to better understand one another and live
harmoniously.

Since tourists are guests to our country, treating them well is also one of the
characteristics of a true Malaysian. The tourism industry benefits our country
economically and provides direct jobs to our community. It also helps in our
infrastructure development, educational growth and to fund conservation efforts.
In addition, it allows both the tourists and the local community an opportunity to
experience other cultures, which broadens understanding. Tourists treated with
courtesy and warmth get a good impression of Malaysia and are more likely to
visit our country again or even recommend it to their friends and relatives. This
further promotes tourism in our country.
Since true Malaysians are also patriots, we can also show our patriotism through
our actions. Upholding the five National Principles, supporting domestically-
manufactured products, using our national language - Bahasa Malaysia, singing
our national anthem loudly and confidently whenever required, refraining from
committing acts of vandalism on public property or littering in public places
indiscriminately, flying our national flag - the Jalur Gemilang on National Day
and all formal occasions, among many others, are all examples of the truly
Malaysian spirit.

In conclusion, the truly Malaysian spirit epitomises the good values of the
Rukun Negara and respects the symbols of the country. Apart from being the
good role model for others, a true Malaysian is friendly and kind as well as
hospitable to visitors to the country.

Is tuition necessary? Discuss.

Tuition is the act of teaching, especially to people in smaller groups or

individuals. It is extremely common among Malaysians, especially primary and
secondary students. When asked if tuition is really necessary, different people
have different opinions. From my point of view, tuition is necessary and I provide
my reasons below.

In this competitive world, students undoubtedly need some extra assistance to

help them perform better academically. Tuition is necessary to complement their
school work, especially when it comes to the more difficult topics and challenging
areas. Additional practice is required to help improve the students'
understanding. Through having private tuition, students are able to obtain extra
helpful tips from their teachers and thus they are more likely to excel in their
studies.

When having tuition, students get to learn in smaller groups or on a one-to-one

basis. This is certainly advantageous to timid students as they get the
opportunities to speak up and ask questions. In a typical Malaysian public school,
a class usually comprises about 45 students. Among so many classmates, the
shy and introverted ones normally find it difficult to ask any questions they have
while attending classes. Such problem can be solved through having tuition.

Furthermore, students are able to get personal attention and develop good study
skills with their teachers' help. Since the group is small, it would be easier for
teachers to spot students' weaknesses and help strengthen them. In other words,
through close collaboration with their tuition teachers, students are able to learn
and improve more effectively.

Through receiving tuition, students get to occupy their time wisely. This is
especially true for latchkey kids. Undeniably, it is better for students to spend
their time studying and revising for examinations rather than wasting time
socialising with the wrong crowd. Things can go really wrong when students get
into wrong company.

Even though tuition fees can be expensive and tuition may take up too much of
students' time, the benefit far outweighs the negatives. Through having tuition,
students are able to acquire unrivalled mastery of a particular subject. Therefore
I firmly believe that tuition is absolutely a necessary tool for students to
strengthen their weaker subjects and boost their self-confidence and morale.

Last Saturday night, my parents went to their friend's wedding dinner. I wished I
could follow them as I hate to be home alone. Unfortunately, only my parents
were invited so I could not go. Before leaving the house, my parents comforted
me and told me that they would come back as early as possible.
After my parents had left the house, I decided to watch a film. I switched on the
computer and inserted a DVD. Just when I was about to start watching, I heard
the horrible sound of the howling wind. Out of curiosity, I took a glance through
the window and saw the trees outside bending over from the strong wind.
Thankfully, it was only the wind. I put on my earphones and began to watch the
film.

After several minutes, it started to rain cats and dogs. The raindrops beat hard
on the roof and the noise was deafening. I looked through the window again.
Suddenly, there was a flash of lightning followed by a loud clap of thunder. The
sudden clap gave me a fright. I quickly shut and locked the window. I also
checked all the other windows and doors to make sure that they were locked. A
loud thunder roared again and the electricity supply was cut off! There was a
blackout. I was nervous as this happened abruptly and there was pitch dark all
over the house. The beating sound of the rain on the roof became clearer.

Quickly, I calmed myself down and decided to search for my torch. I walked
slowly in the dark, trying to find the way to my bedroom. When I was
approaching my bedroom, I thought I heard a horrible cough coming from
somewhere. I panicked and knocked my head against the wall.

"Ouch! My head!" I cried in pain.

After groping around in the dark for a while, I managed to find my torch in my
bedroom. I switched on the torch quickly and went to the kitchen to get a few
candles and a lighter. I lit three candles and placed them in the living room. Then
I sat on the sofa, waiting for the electricity supply to resume. I usually liked it
when it rained, especially during the night because the weather would be cool
and I could sleep soundly. But not tonight - there was a blackout and I was home
alone. I blamed my parents for leaving me at home all by myself.

I fell asleep on the sofa. A sudden knock on the door woke me up. I looked
through the window to see who it was. The electrical power had not resumed yet
and I could hardly see clearly. All of a sudden, I saw a face staring back at me at
the window. Assuming that it was a stranger with some evil intentions, I
screamed and took to my heels. As I was running away, I heard my mother
calling my name and asking me to open the door.
Upon hearing my mother's voice, I was relieved. After unlocking the door, I was
delighted to see my parents in the doorway.

"Mum, Dad! I'm so glad to see you!" I exclaimed, hugging them tightly.

It was actually my father who was peering through the window to see why I lit
candles. After learning what had happened, my parents consoled me and sent
me to my bedroom. It was already 12 midnight then.

The power came back on at the crack of dawn.

After the incident, I was reluctant to be home alone again, especially at night. It
was indeed a frightening and unforgettable experience. I certainly hope that
such incidents will not recur.

It was a hot afternoon as the scorching sun was shining brightly in the sky. I was
about to take a nap but the heat from the sun was unbearable. I sat on my bed,
feeling sleepy. I turned around and looked at my study table. It was in a mess.
Books and stationery were strewn all over the table. So I decided to tidy them
up.

When I was arranging the books, suddenly a photo fell out of a book that I was
holding. I picked it up and looked at it. It was a picture of my best friend, Ben,
and me. I began to recall how Ben became my best friend.

I could still remember that it was the first day in my new school and I was in form
4. My class teacher made an arrangement for me to sit beside Ben. I had been
kicked out of my previous school because of my discipline problems. Starting
from that day, I often disturbed other classmates when the teachers were
teaching. Although the teachers had already given me warnings, I was as
stubborn as a donkey and ignored them. All the teachers complained about my
bad attitude and behaviour in class and my classmates did not like me, except
for Ben. He tried his best to influence me positively and helped me. But I refused
to listen to him.

Ben was the top student in our class. He also excelled in sports and was a role
model to other students. Compared to me, he was totally a different person. But
he did not give up on me and kept trying to guide me. Until one day, something
happened and I decided to turn over a new leaf.

That day, the school bell rang and it was time to go home. When I was walking
home and passing by a bus stop, I saw two junior students waiting for their
school bus. I walked towards them and bullied them. I did not notice that two
seniors were coming. One of the seniors grabbed my collar and pulled me away
from the two juniors. He was actually the two juniors' elder brother.

"Hey! How dare you bully my brothers!" he shouted at me. I was quite shocked
to hear that.

The seniors began to hit me on my face and stomach. I suffered from

excruciating pain and fell to the ground, begging them to stop. I felt dizzy and
could see the anger in their eyes. Suddenly, I saw someone running towards us.
He tried to stop the two seniors but was unsuccessful. He then shielded me
against the attack. When I took a closer look, I realised that it was Ben!

"This is what you deserved for bullying my brothers!" the juniors' elder brother
said furiously through gritted teeth. Soon, they left.

Ben helped me up, took my arm and led me to the bench. There were bruises
and wounds all over my body. Ben decided to take me to his home, where he
applied ointment to my bruises and dressed my wounds. I was extremely grateful
to him for his assistance. At the same time, I was regretful and shameful for what
I did to the juniors.
From that day, Ben and I became intimate friends. We always do our homework
and revisions together. After a period of time, the teachers were pleasantly
surprised to see that my exam results had improved by leaps and bounds. They
were also glad that my conduct had improved tremendously.

One day, Ben gave me a call and wanted to see me in the park near to our
neighbourhood. He told me that he and his family were going to move to Perak
as the company that his father was working in decided to transfer him to the
Perak branch. Before we went home, he advised me against backsliding and
encouraged me to study hard for a brighter future. We embraced each other
before we parted.

I was extremely grateful to Ben for helping me. He was like an elder brother and
a teacher to me. He had taught me so much. I listened to him and so I became a
better person.

Describe an outing with your friends.

Last year during the first semester holidays, I went on an outing with my
classmates and best friends, Ariff and Adam. Adam's father won a trip to Penang,
which came with a hotel suite stay for three people for two nights. As he was
busy with his work, he decided to let us go on the trip instead. We were
overjoyed to hear the good news.

From Kuala Lumpur, we went to the 'Pearl of the Orient' by coach. The journey
took about five hours. After checking in the five-star and high-rise hotel, we
proceeded to our suite which was located on the top floor. Upon seeing the king-
size bed, I jumped onto it as I had always loved staying in hotels. Adam and Ariff
giggled at my silliness. We then went to the balcony to enjoy the superb
panorama of George Town, Penang's capital city. We could also see the blue sea
as the hotel was located by the beach. The views were simply breathtaking.

After unpacking our stuff and having our baths, it was almost dinner time. Since
all meals were provided throughout our stay, we went to the hotel restaurant as
we were famished. A buffet dinner was served and we had a variety of delicious
food. When the meal was over, we brought our torches and strolled along the
beach, where we collected some colourful and pretty seashells. Occasionally, we
saw jellyfish that were stranded on the beach. After the stroll, we retired early
that night because we felt tired.

The next morning, we woke up to a sumptuous and nutritious breakfast. Next, we

went snorkelling in the shallow sea. It was a wonderful feeling swimming among
the exotic and flamboyant sea-fishes. We also had a chance to explore the
spectacular coral reefs. In the afternoon, we had a karaoke session. The karaoke
machines were part of the leisure facilities of the hotel. As we were fans of the
latest hits, we had a good time singing them. Influenced by his parents and
having a great voice, Adam could even render golden oldies.

When evening came, we went to play at the beach. We met a group of teenagers
in our same age group. They were camping by the beach. When we met them,
they were playing Frisbee. We greeted them and they invited us to join them in
their game. We had a lot of fun together. We were glad to have made new
friends. After the game, we rested and watched the enchanting sunset together.

On the third day, we decided to use the health spa facilities of the hotel. We
swam in the Olympic-sized swimming pool and did some workout in the
gymnasium. We also took a sauna. A friendly reflexology professional gave each
one of us a foot massage. We felt mentally relaxed after the reflexology session.

At noon, we checked out of the hotel. We went back to Kuala Lumpur by coach as
well.

Overall, it was a happy trip for us. We considered ourselves extremely fortunate
to be able to enjoy this free trip and stay in a luxurious hotel where everything
was provided free of charge. I had had a wonderful time with my friends and
wondered when such a rare opportunity would come again in future.

There are many famous people in the world who are in the entertainment line,
science field and so on. The person I admire in particular is actor Tom Hiddleston.
He was born in Westminster, London, as the middle child with two sisters.

Tom Hiddleston is best known for his role as Loki in the films 'Thor', 'The
Avengers' and 'Thor: The Dark World'. In 'Thor', Loki was the main antagonist,
striving to claim the throne of Asgard and was willing to kill his brother, Thor and
father, Odin for it. In the end he failed and was sucked into an abyss and later
reappeared in 'The Avengers', seeking to claim the Earth as his own with the help
of the Chitauri, an alien race with a massive army but was defeated by the
Avengers, comprising Thor, Ironman, Captain America, Hawkeye, Hulk and Black
Widow. He was later sent into jail by Odin in 'Thor: The Dark World' and later
joined forces with Thor to defeat Malekith, leader of the dark elves, only to be
seemingly killed by the Kursed. He was later seen impersonating Odin.

What I like about Tom Hiddleston is that he brings out the character Loki really
well. He plays Loki with so much compassion and really brings the character to
life from the comics to the big screen. I love the way he acts, taking up each
scene with much anticipation and compassion. In 'Thor', he was first seen as a
person who will do anything to seize power. The way he acted as Loki in 'The
Avengers', bringing out the mad and evil side of Loki, really caught everyone's
attention. Throughout the movie, he showed how power-hungry Loki could be
and that he would take whatever it took to seize control of the Earth. In 'Thor:
The Dark World', he showed that he had a reason to help Thor and that he loved
his stepmother, Frigga, deeply. He demonstrated the love when he used magic to
smash furniture against the walls when he found out about her death.

When he first signed up for 'Thor', he tried out for the character Thor but was
found to be unsuitable. But during the interviews, he showed so much
determination and was seen as the perfect person to play Loki.
In real life, he is known to value his fans and always entertains them well. He will
tweet with them on Twitter and he even has a group, called "Loki's Army", going
after him. That is how much Tom Hiddleston has influenced the world of
entertainment as one of the best villains to ever take on the big screen. During
interviews, he would always be jovial and tell jokes. Even his own fellow actors
like Natalie Portman and Chris Hemsworth say that he is a fun and supportive
actor, even though he is the eldest among the trio. Two of his personality traits
that I admire are that he always does his best and he is extremely humble.

To sum it up, Tom Hiddleston is one celebrity I really admire and I would love to
meet him one day. I hope that my dream would come true in the near future.

The Internet, which became available to the general public in the year 1991, is
currently a worldwide phenomenon. In our modern world, most people depend
on it so much that it would be extremely difficult to live without it. Hence, I do
agree that the Internet is mostly a good thing.

Also known as the information superhighway, the Internet provides us

information on almost anything with great ease. It is like we have the world at
our fingertips. Just name it - online library, books, journals, newspapers,
information on health, education, gardening, vehicles, astronomy and so forth -
they are all available on the Internet. With the satellite maps of virtually
anywhere on earth, we know how to get to places and never be lost again, even
in a strange city.

The business world depends heavily on the Internet nowadays. Business deals
are discussed and transactions carried out through the Internet. Online shopping,
which was unheard of decades ago, is currently becoming the norm. A lot of
people prefer online shopping to visiting shops or department stores due to the
security and convenience that the former provides. Many of the online sellers
promise next-day delivery of purchased goods. Thanks to the advancement of
technology - the Internet, buyers today no longer need to get out of their houses
to get something. Similarly, Internet or online banking enables individuals to
perform banking activities at home via the Internet. Days when people had to
exit their homes to pay their water and electricity bills were gone. Consumers
can now pay their utility bills and make most other payments online with only a
few mouse clicks.

People lacking the time or means to travel out of their homes or countries to
further their studies can now do so using the distance learning or e-learning
method. There are many online universities and even prestigious traditional
universities offering online courses. Students taking such courses are able to
learn remotely through the Internet without being in the regular face-face
contact with a teacher in a classroom. Since interactions between the students
and teacher are done online, their locations do not pose a problem. E-learning
programmes are usually more affordable and furthermore, students are allowed
to progress at their own speed. Therefore, distance learning education offers
much more flexibility compared to traditional tertiary education.

The Internet has tremendously improved the way we communicate with one
another. Nowadays we are able to communicate with people across the globe at
high speed. In the past when people communicated via correspondence, letters
could take days and even weeks to arrive at their destinations. Presently, we are
able to see people who are faraway and speak to them in real time, as if the
person is right in front of us, through videoconferencing and video calling. Online
chatting and instant messaging allows the real-time transmission of text
messages from sender to receiver and vice versa, while emailing allows the
delivery of both long and short messages within seconds.

In a nutshell, although some people may misuse the Internet for bad intentions, I
believe that it is mostly a good thing if we use it wisely. Undeniably, the Internet
is a rich resource for learning. Let us do the right thing and make the Internet a
blessing instead of a curse.

Describe an unforgettable incident that you saw on your way home from school.

It was a hot afternoon and the heat from the scorching sun was quite
unbearable. I was cycling home from school after arranging the books in the
school library as I was a librarian. The road was quiet. I felt hungry and was
looking forward to reaching home and having my late lunch.
When I was cycling along the roadside, a motorcyclist appeared out of the blue
and roared past me. He had almost knocked me down and I was rather taken
aback by his sudden appearance. I then noticed there was a passenger behind
the motorcyclist and they were heading for a lady, who was walking on the
pavement at the side of the road.

The motorcyclist then stopped beside the lady. After dismounting from the
motorcycle, the pillion rider tried to snatch the lady's handbag but she resisted.
Feeling furious, he took out a knife and brandished it at her. On seeing the knife,
the lady was scared and apprehensive of getting hurt. Having no alternative, she
let the mugger have her handbag. After getting hold of the handbag, the mugger
shoved her. He shoved her so hard that she fell into the ditch. The obnoxious
criminal then mounted the motorcycle. His accomplice, who was also the
motorcyclist, sped off and they escaped from the scene.

I was shocked at what I saw. The robbery happened so fast that before I could do
anything to try to foil it, the whole incident was over. I ran to help the lady. When
I reached the part of the ditch where the lady fell into, I saw her seated at the
bottom of the ditch. She had scratch marks on her arms and legs and was
groaning in pain. I then realised that she was pregnant. I assisted her to get out
of the ditch. I felt sorry for her as she was in a state of shock. I comforted her.
Soon, a car stopped beside us and a man emerged from it. Upon seeing the
condition of the lady, he asked me what had transpired. I related the whole
incident to him. The benevolent man then offered to take the lady to hospital. As
I was an eyewitness to the crime, he requested me to come along in order to
help lodge a police report.

The doctor who examined her said that apart from some superficial scratches
and minor bruises on her limbs, she was doing fine. The baby she was conceiving
was healthy as well. I was glad to hear that. A few days later, she came to my
house to thank me personally for lending her a helping hand. However, the
snatch thieves were never apprehended. I would never forget this incident or the
snatch thieves' faces as long as I live.

A Road Accident

Every day, we learn about road accidents through coverage in the mass media
such as television, radio and newspapers. As we all know, the majority of road
accidents are caused by reckless drivers and not by faulty vehicles.

Last Thursday, while I was walking home from school by the side of a highway in
Kota Damansara, I witnessed a terrible accident which happened right in front of
my eyes. The accident involved a huge lorry and a bus. The lorry, which was
travelling on the second lane, was loaded with steel while the bus was packed
with passengers and travelling on the third lane. Before the accident occurred,
the lorry was ahead of the bus and the distance between them was close. The
bus was travelling at a high speed of about 160 kilometres per hour. All of a
sudden, the lorry swerved to the third lane. Upon seeing the sudden change, the
bus driver tried to brake but it was too late. Subsequently, the bus rammed into
the back of the lorry. The impact of the ram was so strong that both vehicles
were badly dented and dragged some distance before they came to a halt.

After the accident, some passers-by and many drivers stopped theirs cars to give
the victims a helping hand. Just like me, they were shocked by the tragedy.
Immediately, I ran to a nearby phone booth and called 999 to inform the relevant
authorities about the accident. I also called for an ambulance. Although we
managed to rescue a few of the victims, many of them were trapped on the bus.
About 15 minutes later, the police, firefighters and a few ambulances arrived at
the scene and started the rescue work at once. While the police were controlling
the traffic and talking to the eyewitnesses, the firefighters were helping the
victims to exit from the bus. They were then treated by the paramedics at the
roadside before being rushed to hospital.
It was a horrifying scene that made me sick when the dead victims were taken
out of the bus. Some of them had their stomachs ripped apart while some had
fractured skulls, among other fatal injuries. Not long after, the large amount of
diesel fuel on the ground that was leaked from the oil tanks of the two vehicles
somehow ignited. On seeing the blaze, everybody panicked. After requesting
everyone to stay away from the fire, the firefighters managed to put it out and
stop it from spreading. Luckily, no one was injured and the rescue work resumed.

A few hours later, all the victims were pulled from the wreckage and the rescue
operation ended. The deceased were sent to the hospital mortuary, where they
were claimed by their next of kin.

I learn a valuable lesson from the tragic accident - all road users should observe
traffic rules strictly to reduce accidents to a minimum. Otherwise, many innocent
civilians are injured and even killed. A road users carelessness, negligence and
recklessness can bring pains and sufferings not only to himself but a lot of other
people as well. Hopefully, such tragic accidents will increase public awareness of
the importance of obeying traffic regulations and reduce accidents.

relatives. I cant imagine my life without them. But there is one, who will always
be in the first place in my heart. Her name is Anna and she is my closest friend.

Like most teenagers she pays a lot of attention to her appearance and likes

being the centre of attention. Her biggest dream is to become a singer and I truly
believe that one day shell make her wish come true. Anna has won many prizes
and has taken part in many concerts, because she sings really incredibly.

As a normal human being, however, Anna also has her shortcomings. She never
goes on time to her dates. Sometimes she is absent-minded and inconsiderate
and that makes people think she never takes things seriously. But this is not true.
She has a strong sense of responsibility and you can always rely on her.

Another characteristic she has is that shes gregarious, sensitive and emotional.
She also gets confused easily and doesnt forget those who have caused her
harm.

The thing I admire most about Anna is that she is protective and likes to look
after people. Believe it or not, once she ever saved my life! Ill never forget that
day. We went swimming in a pool. Suddenly, my left leg went dead I couldnt go
on swimming. I lost consciousness. When I opened my eyes I found myself lying
and Anna holding my hands. She, herself had pulled me out of the water. That
was a real narrow escape from the death, and if she werent there, I would have
drowned.

For me, friendship is the most important thing in the world. I am proud to say
that I have such loyal and helpful friend one in a million.

Haze: A Danger to Health

The haze is a constant phenomenon faced by Malaysia and her

neighbouring countries. The haze is basically pollution of atmosphere, which is
clogged with pollutants and other substances from forest fires.

The haze is a direct effect of forest fire in Kalimantan and other parts of
Indonesia due to slash and burn method of farming. The Indonesian authorities
appear to have no power to control farmers from practising such methods. The
haze is further worsened by open burning practised by most Malaysians. Open-
field burning of rice straw by the rice planters and open burning of dried leaves
and garbage done by the public are a few examples that done by Malaysian.
Many are ignorant of the health effects of open burning.

During the haze, hospitals and clinic often report a dramatic increase in
respiratory problems, lung infections and asthma attack. The Air Pollution Index
(API) usually indicates the hazardous and dangerous levels of pollution during
this period. The haze has long-term side effects. Prolonged inhalation of polluted
air will result in serious lung infection which particularly affects the elderly.

The government must play its role to reduce the haze treat. It has to
cooperate with the Indonesian authorities to stamp out forest fires. The culprits
must be brought to justice, either through healthy fine or prison sentence.
Constant vigilance would ensure the perpetrators do not repeat their offence.

The government should also raise the public awareness of the dangers of forest
fire. Continuous campaign of the cause, solutions and steps-need-to-be-taken to
reduce the haze need to be promoted through all types of social media like
television, radio, newspaper and even via internet. The authorities should also
provide assistance to farmers and introduce more sophisticated forest clearing
methods.

In Malaysia, strict laws must be imposed to penalise those who practise

open burning. On-going campaigns on the dangers of open burning should be
intensified. Individuals too have a role to play. They must participate in every
campaign and stop burning. Students can advise their parents not to practice
open burning.

Every individual has to remember that we do not own the world, but
instead we lent it from our future generations. We must protect our world so that
our grandchildren woulh have a healthy earth to live.

The Importance of Studying English

Although the government has repeatedly told us of the importance of

English, many students are still not bothered about studying it seriously. There is

learner, which is Enhance Proficiency in Bahasa Malaysia, Strengthen the
English. English is the most important and the most useful language in the world
today. There are many reasons why you should study the language properly.

First and foremost, English will definitely help you a lot when you want to
further studies. Almost all books at university are written in English in all
subjects. Plus, it is a compulsory for any candidate to pass English with credit
before entering any universities. So, if you are poor in English, you will blow you
chance for better education or worse, you are going to have a big problem
studying at university.

The second reason why you have to study English well is that it will help
you to get a job. When you go for a job interview, the interviewer will surely talk
to you in English. The first impression you should give in order to success and
have the job is, to respond in English fluently. Your chances of getting the job are
very slim if you stutter while interviewing.

A good command in of English will also help you greatly in your job. If the
company you work is actively involved in international trade, you have to speak
to prospective customers in English. Miscommunication might occur if your
English is bad. And this will put your company at risk and you will likely be
dismissed if this happen.

Good English will also help you a lot when you travel. Every country in
the world studies English. Even the roadside stall-holders in China speak fairly
good English! At least some of the people you meet on your travels in other
countries can understand English. The language is certainly practical when you
are lost in your trip. Communication problem will not happen if you can converse
well in English. Inevitably, English is one of the languages used in any airport in
the world in making announcement. Knowing English well, therefore, make
travelling overseas easier.

Besides all these, entertainment is one of the major advantages you will
experience if you good in English. You will enjoy televisions best programmes.
We must admit that many of the best programmes are produced by the
Americans and British companies. High self confidence influenced by the
programmes will indirect inculcate in yourself when you are fluent in the
language. Quality time is worthily spent if you understand and enjoy the
programmes.

Based from all the above elaboration, I hope that students will see the
importance and realise how importance the language is for their own future.
Although it is a second language in our country, it is now a main language all

PULAU PINANG, Thu An elderly businessman and his wife foiled a robbery
attempt by two men armed with a screwdriver and a knife. The victims were
reported safe from any bad injury.

Tan Ah Wok, 60 and his wife were taking a morning walk near their home
in Helen Heights yesterday when two men on a motorcycle stopped them under
the pretext of asking for directions. As Mr. Tan was giving directions, one of the
robbers pointed a knife at him and ordered them to keep quiet. He then relieved
Mrs. Tan of her jewellery and instructed Mr. Tan to hand over his ring and watch.
When he refused, a struggle ensued. Meanwhile, his accomplice grabbed a
helmet and hit Mr. Tan on the head with it. On seeing this, his wife started
screaming.

One of their neighbours, R. Subramaniam, who was taking his dog for a
walk, heard the screams and when to investigate. On seeing Subramaniam and
his dog, the robbers fled. I was taking my dog for a walk when I heard someone
shouting for help. Knowing that something was wrong, I ran there as fast as I
could. Before I reached the scene, the robbers fled on a motorbike. They were
probably afraid of my Rottweiler.

Mr. Tan, who suffered a small cut on his head, was given outpatient
treatment at a private clinic. He said that it was a horrified experience as he
never expected the two men would attack his wife and him. He thought that they
were lost and needed help. He also mentioned that the guard who in charge
nowadays easily allowed the strangers to enter their residents. State CID Chief
Supt Harun Din advised him and the people to be more careful in giving help to
strangers. The guard also must be stricter in letting people from entering any
residents without proper permission.

He added that the suspects, aged between 25 and 30, were believed to
be illegal immigrants. He said there had been similar incident last week when
two men approached a factory worker who was on her way home after work. The
duo then relieved her gold chain and cash. He advised the residents to be alert
and reports to police any suspicious-looking characters lurking in their area.

On 7th September 2011 at 10.30 a.m., I was walking alone Jalan 2/14
which is next to the childrens playground. As I was about to cross the road to
enter the park, I saw a car driving swiftly down Jalan 4/14. It was a Honda Civic
with the number plate BEH 9110. Another car, a Toyota Vios 1.5 with plate
number WHM 4657 came out of Jalan 4/14 as well. The Honda Civic was driving
too fast that make it did not have time to avoid collision.

The accident caused a loud crash. The Honda Civic hit the Toyota Vios on
the drivers door. The door could not be opened and the driver had to get out
from the passengers door. The driver of the Toyota Vios was lucky as he survived
with no physical injuries. Both air bags popped up when they collided to each
other. They both were fortunate as their car was not badly damaged and dented.

The Toyota Vioss windscreen was shattered to pieces. The Honda Civics
headlight and signal light were smashed. There was plenty of glass on the road.
The two drivers startled to argue. The driver of the Honda City was a woman.
They blamed each other and the argument stopped when her mobile phone
rang. Most of the passerby slowed down their vehicle to watch the accident.
Some pedestrian came by and offered help.

As it happened, I ran into my house which is close by. I called the nearest police
station and in ten minutes, a police car drove up. I told the police officer I had
witnessed the accident and offered to come out to the station to give a
statement. The cars were towed to the side of the road first, and then were
brought to the police station before to workshop. Pictures were taken for
insurance claim.

In my opinion, the driver of the Honda City is to blame for the accident. She was
driving too fast and did not pay any attention to vehicles coming out from the
side road. The driver of the Toyota Vios should have stopped at the junction.

The Story of My Life is an autobiography written by Helen Keller. It tells us how

Helen Keller, who was deaf, blind and mute, defied the odds to become one of
the most celebrated personalities in the world. The story was set in Alabama in
1997.

In the first half of the book, Helen Keller writes about how she was
afflicted with scarlet fever while she was still a baby and how illness left her deaf,
blind and mute. The story outlines the frustration Helen Keller experienced as a
child alone in a dark and silent world unable to communicate with anybody.
The author then goes on to say how her life changed with the arrival of her new-
employed teacher and nanny, Anne Mansfield Sullivan.

The second part of the book relates how Helen Keller studied the deaf
and dumb language and learnt how to write using Braille and then went to
college and graduated. The story goes on to say how she spent the rest of her
life helping the deaf and dumb all over the world.

I enjoyed reading every page of the book. I found some sections of the
book, especially those that deal with the early part of her life, poignant and
touching. It made me realize how difficult life must be for the handicapped. It
also made me realize how fortunate I was. It has made me more sympathetic
towards the plight of those who are less fortunate than I am, especially the
handicapped who has given up hope in the face of misfortune, and the severely
handicapped who have lost the will to live.

The story is very touching and informative. It arouses the feelings of the
readers. I admire Helen Keller for her determination and diligence. I appreciate
the painstaking efforts taken by the teacher. The book has a good moral lesson
for all. It shows the triumph of the human spirit in the face of indomitable
obstacles. It makes us wonder whether Helen Keller was just another victim of
fate or whether her birth has a special significance. Was Helen Keller fortunate or
unfortunate? Helen Keller was unfortunate to have suffered the cruel twist of fate
but the world is fortunate to have had a person like her. Her life shining example
to prove the adage, where there is a will, there is a way.

Report about the School Canteen

I am writing this report is to draw your attention regarding the school

canteen. Many of the students of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Permata are
unhappy about the conditions at the school canteen. There were lots of
complaints regarding this issue.

In the first place, there are insufficient tables and benches. Our
school has a student population of over 1 000. There is only one period of recess
time for all forms. More than 80 per cent of the students go to the canteen
during recess to buy food and drinks. Unfortunately, there are only about twenty-
five tables and fifty benches which can accommodate less than half the number
of students. As a result, many students have to stand while eating.

The food sold at the canteen not only expensive but lacks of variety. The
menu is the same every day. For the past five years, ever since the present
canteen management took over, students go back to the same food.

The hygiene and preparation of food leave a lot to be desired. The food
and drinks are not covered. They way canteen attendants dress speak volume
about hygiene. With their lackadaisical attitude, the food they sell would one way
or the other become contaminated.

My fourth complaint about the canteen pertains to the etiquette of the

canteen workers. They are rude and arrogant. They often shout at students. The
students are always on the receiving end of their bad moods.

We hope that conditions at the canteen will improve. The canteen should
provide better amenities. There should also be a different menu everyday so that
students will not have to taste the same food day in and day out. Cleanliness
should be given top priority.
 We hope that you will look into our complaints and take steps to remedy
the situation. The students are prepared to boycott the canteen if their
complaints go unheeded.

Dear Sir,

Uncollected Rubbish and Clogged Drains

I am writing this letter is to attract your attention to the above title. As the
representative of the community, I am calling to tell you that the 300 odd
residents living in Taman Sentosa are extremely unhappy about the lackadaisical
attitude of the local town council towards the uncollected rubbish and clogged
drains in our area.

2. The rubbish in our area has not been collected for more than a week. The
rubbish is supposed to be collected on alternate days but this has not been the
case. The town council workers collect the rubbish according to their own whims
and fancies. The uncollected garbage has attracted not only flies and mosquitoes
but also wild dogs which had attacked the residents on several occasions. These
stray animals also scatter the rubbish and make the roads dirty and smelly. As a
result, residents have to bear the discomfort of stench from the garbage and risk
their health.

3. We are also disappointed with the town council workers for not clearing
the clogged drains which are filled with rubbish. The drains would usually
overflow when there is heavy rain and the rubbish would then flow into the
compounds of our houses. Besides, putting up with the unbearable stench
emitted from them, the residents have to spend hours cleaning their compounds
of rotten vegetables, food leftovers and other rubbish.

4. Due to dengue outbreak recently, we are really concerned about the

residents health especially the children. Fogging service also was not done
accordingly to the schedule. The fogging authority only did their job whenever a
case of dengue aroused. They even fogging the neighbourhood late at night that
caused us to leave the residents. They need to consider the residents who have
babies and also to those who need to wake up early in the morning for work. The
fogging also caused the people to have breathing problem when we were not
told the exact time of fogging.

5. We have made numerous appeals to the Municipal Council to look into

our complaints but to no avail. We have been putting up with this predicament
for more than a week. We hope the health authorities would do something to
check these health hazards.

Dear John,

How are you? Im sorry to hear that your cousin had dengue fever. This
problem seems to have become very serious all of sudden. We always feel that
the problem is not our concern until someone close to us is affected.

My neighbours daughter who was in Standard 6 last year could not sit for
UPSR examination because she was down with dengue fever on the eve of the
exam. Fortunately, the authorities gave her an exemption so she is now in Form
One. There were also a few students taking the examination in the hospital.

According to the news, students made up nearly 30 per cent of the 1 500
suspected cases over the first three weeks of the year. About 53 per cent of 621
confirmed cases last year comprised children and youth under the age of 24.
These statistics are quite worrying. This has prompted the health ministry to
increase checks on aedes breeding grounds in school and public areas. The
construction sites are largely to blamed. The problem is made worse by the rainy
season. The stagnating water attract the mosquitoes to lay egg and breeding on
the areas.

The authorities have taken various steps to control the situation. Fogging
has been carried out in many public areas and most of the housing estates.
Contractors at the construction sites have been instructed to take appropriate
actions and warned to clean up. They could be fined up to RM 3 000 for breeding
aedes mosquitoes. Lot of campaigns through the television, radio and
newspapers were taken to make people aware of the issue and take precaution
rather than cure them.

Before the long holidays for the Chinese New Year, schools all over
Malaysia carried out a clean-up campaign of the school compound. The
residents association in my housing are also organised a family day clean-up of
the housing estate. There were huge piles of rubbish especially old tyres and
containers littered by the hawkers near the might market site.

The situation in Malaysia has improved since the end of January. There
have been no reports of new cases of dengue. So, dont worry. You can bring your
family for a holiday here in June. Im looking forward to seeing them again.

Your school is having a month-long A Healthy Body Campaign. As President of

the Health Club of your school, you decide to give a speech on the Tak nak
Campaign recently launched by the government.

A very good morning to our dear Principal, Mr. Hasnan bin Jaafar,
teachers and students.

Recently, our former Prime Minister, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi

launched an anti-smoking campaign called Tak Nak. You can now see this short
and rhyming catch phrase Tak Nak everywhere on billboards, posters, TV ads,
and sometimes I even hear it on the radio. Though some people have criticised
our government for setting aside a staggering sum of RM100 million over 6 years
for the campaign, it is nothing compared to the huge amounts that tobacco
companies spend to promote smoking.

But in this war against smoking, money definitely talks; it is necessary for
the Tak Nak Campaign to constanly remind us of the hazard of smoking because
about 50 Malaysian teenagers light up for the first time every day. In fact, some
of these youth progress steadily from this to regular use, with addiction raking
hold within a few years. And this is despite the warning on every pack of
cigarettes that states unequivocally Smoking is dangerous to your health.

What can the Tak Nak Campaign do to combat this? Their aggressive
advertising creates media awareness among the public, especially among the
fashionable young crowd, that smokers have yellowed teeth and suffer from
shortness of breath and tells them that it is not cool to smoke. It is also not
responsible of them to affect non-smokers with second-hand smoke.
 Also, there is a succession of infomercials on TV and in the papers
showing the debilitating effects of tobacco addiction on the body and gruesome
statistics of smoke-related deaths. We are now familiar with the graphic pictures
of damaged lungs on billboards which should scare people into not smoking. This
works, as I know some of my friends are quitting now, or trying to reduce the
number of cigarettes they smoke per week.

However, I feel any anti-smoking campaign is more effective if other

people and organisations are actively involved too. Yes, the first step has been
taken by the top, but sad to say, many of our politicians smoke themselves.
Nearer to home, so do some of our parents and teachers.

These adults have to be good role models by not smoking themselves. If

they do smoke, they should tell their children and students that they regret that
they ever started, and then take steps to quit smoking as soon as possible. They
must practise what they preach.

On a more positive note, I commend the Malaysia Amateur Athletic Union for its
zero-tolerance of smoking because they know that smoking and health just do
not mix. How can our sportsmen excel if they cannot stop smoking.

Dear teachers and students, thank you for your attention. Let me end my speech
by reiterating that smoking is a bad habit, so make Tak Nak your mantra. If you
have started smoking, say Tak Nak and quit! And if you havent started smoking,
say know that smoking not only damages your health but you are also literally
burning your money.

Nowadays, the use of Internet is increasing especially among adolescence

or more accurately, students. The Internet issue is discussed by the adults and
parents. Most of them are worried that the use of Internet is dangerous to their
kids. Some others said that Internet may bring benefits to their children
especially to those who will be sitting for an examination.

On my opinion, Internet has both benefits and drawbacks. First of all, let
me talk about the benefits first. As we know, Internet is mostly used by
students. By surfing internet, students can visit various websites to assist their
studies. The examples of popular websites are tutortv.com , unicliq.com , and
tutor.com.my. They can visit the websites and revise their studies in more
exciting way. Some of them are free. Students can visit it anytime they want.
The websites also provide useful notes and exercises. At the same time, students
can get additional information that they cannot find it in books. For instance,
they can go to 'Google' or 'Yahoo' search engines to search for more ideas to
write an essay. In short, Internet provides vast informations and knowledge which
is very beneficial for the students.

Next, Internet also provides lots of social networks such as Facebook ,

Twitter, MySpace and many other. Through these social networks, we can add
more friends and make new friends. We can also know friends from other country
as these social networks are used internationally. Other than adding friends, we
can also strengthen our relationship with our friends and family who are staying
far away from us using Skype. We can see them in front of our eyes eventhough
they are actually far away from us through web camera.

Besides, Internet also offers entertainment. We canwatch videos of our

favourite artists by just one click through 'Youtube' website. We can also watch
favourite movies without paying. Plus, there are many artists born from
'Youtube'. So, fans can know more about the artists from Youtube. Meanwhile,
4shared.com provides tracks, videos and files that can be downloaded for free!
Internet users can enjoy themselves at anytime watching their favourite artists'
performance for free.

Internet doen not only offersbenefits for students but also to those who
want to gain more money. It also provides business opportunities. As for
example, mudah.my gives a wide room for surfers to promote anything they
want to sell. Through this, people with no job can gain money and support their
lives by doing the online business.

However, as I said earlier, Internet also brings bad effects to its users.
Firstly, it can encourage cyber crimes. Besides that, students who spend too
much time on Internet may neglect their studies and do not finish their
homework. This should be avoided as studies are important especially to
teenagers.

Although Internet can add more friends to our list, yet, it still can develop
anti-social behaviour. Not all of the users use Internet to make friends, some of
them only play video games or just sit down watching videos on You tube. They
will only sit and ignore what is happening around them. The worst thing is, they
may not realise that there is an earthquake out there! This anti-social behaviour
may leads to health problems. The users will just stay at home and sit in front of
computer and this will cause them to be lazy couch potatoes. It will also lead to
obesity.

Next, most students will not attracted to surf knowledgeable websites, but
wasting their time on other non-beneficial things. Wasting time on Internet can
cause students to neglect their studies. Not only time is wasted but also money.
With the uses of more electricity non-stop, utility bills may increase dramatically.
We just not pay for the electric bills but also internet monthly bills.

The conclusion is, everything has its own benefits and drawbacks. However,
it depends on how we are using it. If we spend more time using it for benefits, we
will get positive effects. But if we use it more to non-beneficial things, we will get
negative effects. So, it depends on you.
