Kindergarten and 1st Grade- Hoop Guard Game

o Students get a partner and try to toss a bean bag in their
partners hoop; the partner tries to deflect it
o If the bean bag lands in the hoop, the student gets 1 point
o The bean bag cannot slide it or bounce in

1st or Second Grade

Mirror A Partner
o Students take turns copying each other, moving slowly.
o For 4-5grades, students can copy partner using the equal part of
the body; for example- if a lift up my right arm, my partner facing
me, has to lift up her right arm)
Hook-Ups or Positive Pretzel Twists
o Partner points to different fingers to try to lift up (dont touch the
fingers, just point!)
o Reach arms out, thumbs down, fingers pointing out; cross wrists,
high five hands and clasp fingers together; bring the top of your
combined hands through towards the opening near your chest.
Using Both Hands, switch #2 to #5 and vice versa
Criss-Cross Plank (same as K and 1)

Duck, Duck, Goose

Students pair up and line up in the middle (vertically)
Dome cones (different colors) mark the safe zones, where students
must get to, if they say goose and avoid getting tagged
o Students on the right side, run to the right safe zone, and
students on the left side, run to the left safe zone.
Each student taps the other ones shoulder until someone says
goose, take turns saying goose
3rd-5th Grades
True/False Game
Same set up as Duck, Duck, Goose, except one side is true and
the other side is false.
The teacher reads out different questions and the students have to
recognize if the statement is true or false.
If the statement is true, then the student on the true side runs to
the safe zone and vice versa.

Hoop Pass
Students Pair Up and get 1 hula-hoop and 1 ball
They must bounce pass the ball into the hoop (lying on the ground) to
their partner
After awhile, students can move around the hoop, trying to score a
point (360 degrees)
This is a modified version of four square

Addition Tag
Students pair up.
Each student starts by holding out 1 fist.
The pair counts to three and then holds out a number on his or her
hand (1,2,3,4,5)
The students must add the two numbers and whoever says it out loud
first, takes off speed walking. The other student must also speed walk
and try to tag their partner.
Once their partner has been tagged, the game starts over.
o Extensions:
o 1. Have students use 2 hands and add the 4 numbers together
o 2. Have students use 2 hands, add their 2 numbers separately,
and then multiply the 2 numbers together
o 3. Have students get into groups of 3 and do the same thing.

Math/Spelling Partner Catch

Each student pairs up and gets one gator ball or any kind of ball that is
catchable
Each student takes turns calling out a number and throwing the ball to
his or her partner. For example, I call out the number 12 and give my
partner a nice high toss. My partner then has to come up with an
addition or subtraction problem that equals 12 and say it out loud
before catching the ball. So, 6+6 or 4+8 or 14-2, etc.
o You can reverse it and have students call out an addition,
subtraction, or multiplication problem to their partner and their
partner has to answer it before he or she catches the ball.
You can do the same thing, but have students spell 3 letter words,
before catching the ball.
o Extension: 1. One partner turns around and has to listen for the
word, spin around and catch the ball and spell it.
o 2. Have students spell the word backwards.

Planets & Asteroids

o Students get into groups of 4, with 1 soft soccer ball and 1 gator
ball
o 2 students dribble the soccer ball (planet) away from their other
2 partners with the gator ball (asteroid)
o The students with the asteroid can only pass to each other
(cannot run/walk/move with the ball) and try to hit the planet. If
they hit it, then the partners switch turns.

2-5 Grade
Oh Deer!
Divide students up into 2 groups and have them stand facing each
other on opposite side lines.
Instruct one group of students that they are the HABITAT and the
other group are the DEER. The habitat group cannot move, until a
deer comes and gets them.
Instruct both groups that there are 3 main important things that
animals need to survive: food, water, and shelter.
Show them the symbols {food-rub your belly, water-cover your mouth,
and shelter-make an O above your head}
Each student will choose a symbol and instruct students to turn around
so that they cannot see each other.
On the count of 3, students will turn around. The deer will have to
run and find a habitat that matches their symbol and return with it
back to their side.
Discuss with students: What happened to the habitat? What happened
to the deer population? What do you think is going to happen next?
If a deer cant find a habitat, it dies and becomes part of the habitat.
You can also discuss survival of the fittest.

Teacher-Led Dance Warm-up

You will need a dance mix of songs for this activity.
Start by having students follow you and copy your dance moves (can
be exercises as well-jumping jacks, squat jumps, push ups, etc.)
After 30 seconds or so, call on a student. Everyone in the class will
have to find that student and start copying their dance moves or
exercises. After 30 seconds, the student will call on the teacher again,
etc.
Mix it up where you stand, so that students have to find where you are
in the gym. Learn the actual dance moves for the songs to make it
more entertaining for the students!

Teaching Games for Understanding

Grid System
o Each grid contains up to 7 students; 3 in the inside, 4 on the
outside
o Teach defense and offense, moving to the open space
