Overfishing has led to depletion of fish stocks around the world. Decades of overfishing have caused fish populations to decline by up to 90% in some areas. If overfishing continues unmanaged, scientists predict that oceans could be nearly empty of fish by 2048. Overfishing not only threatens biodiversity and ocean ecosystems, but also damages economies and food security as fish populations decline. International cooperation is needed to set sustainable catch limits and rebuild depleted fish stocks.
