KM M CM MM: Basic Measurements

Here are the answers: 1. 5 km 32 m  12 = 62 km 384 m 2. 89 m  6 = 14 m 15 cm 3. 5 kg 445 g  5 = 1 kg 89 g 4. 35 888g = 35.888 kg 5. If a car can travel 180 km 250 m in 3 hours Then in 1 hour it can travel 180 km 250 m / 3 = 60 km 83.33 m In 5 hours it can travel 5 * 60 km 83.33 m = 300 km 416.67 m

Basic Measurements

By Muralee.V.

Measurement is a process to determine the exact size or quantity using a predefined unit.

Length
- Distance between two points on a straight line which can be measured with a
ruler.
- Unit of length include:
1 centimetre (cm) = 10 millimetres (mm)
1 metre (m) = 100 centimetres (cm)
1 metre (m) = 1 000 millimetres (mm)
1 kilometre (km) = 1 000 metres (m)
- To change a metric unit into another involves multiplication or division.
1 000 100 10
km m cm mm
1 000 100 10

Example 1
1. Change
a) 0.54 km into m
b) 546 mm into cm
c) 4 089 mm into m
2. Julia walks to her office everyday. The distance between her office and her house
is 1 km 25 m. Calculate the total distance, in km, she walks from Tuesday to
Saturday.

Solution
1.
a) 1 km = 1 000 m
So, 0.54 1 000 = 540 m

b) 10 mm = 1 cm
So, 546 mm 10 = 54.6 cm

c) 10 mm = 1 cm
100 cm = 1 m
1 000 mm = 1 m
So, 4 089 mm 1 000 = 4.089 m

2. 1 km 25 m = 1.025km
One day she walks = 2 1.025 (go to work and return home)
= 2.05km
Tuesday to Saturday = 5 days
The total distance = 5 2.05
= 10.25 km
Therefore, from Tuesday to Saturday she walks 10.25 km.

Mass
- Quantity of matter in a body
- Unit of mass include:
1 gram (g) = 1 000 milligrams (mg)
1 kilogram (kg) = 1 000 gram (g)
1 tonne (t) = 1 000 kilogram (kg)
- To change a metric mass unit into another involves multiplication or division.
1 000 1 000 1 000
tonne 1 000 kg 1 000 g mg
1 000

Example 2
1. Change
a) 6.458 tonnes into kg
b) 65 603 kg into tonnes
c) 4.543 g into mg
2. Rohayu buys 14 kg of sugar. She uses 55 g of sugar everyday. How many grams
of sugar does she have left after 25 days?

Solution
1.
a) 1 tonne = 1 000 kg
So, 6.458 1 000 = 6 458 kg

b) 1 000 kg = 1 tonne
So, 65 603 1 000 = 65.603 tonnes

c) 1 g = 1 000 mg
So, 4.543 1 000 = 4 543 mg

2. Usage of sugar everyday = 55 g

For 25 days = 25 55 g
= 1375 g
Change into kg = 14 kg 1 000
= 14 000 g
The balance sugar left = 14 000 g 1 375 g
= 12 625 g
Therefore, the sugar does Rohayu left after 25 days is 12 625 g.

Time
- The period between two events.
- Unit of time include:
1 minute = 60 seconds
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 day = 24 hours
1 week = 7 days
1 year = 365 days
1 year = 52 weeks
1 year = 12 months
1 decade = 10 years
1 century = 100 years
1 millennium = 1 000 years
- To change a time unit into another involves multiplication or division.
7 24 60 60
week day hour minute second
7 24 60 60
52 12
week year month
52 12
- Every four years occurs leap year
consists 366 days
February has 29 days
2000, 2004, 2008, . Are leap years

Example 3
1. Solve the following
a) 7 hours 57 minutes 16 seconds + 3 hours 12 minute 46 seconds
b) 2 hours 15 minutes 5

2. Alice can type 720 words in 12 minutes. How many words she can type in 3
minutes?

Solution
1. a)

hour minute second

7 57 16
+ 3 12 46
10 69 62
+ 1 + 1 - 60 60 seconds = 1 minute
11 70 2
- 60 60 minutes = 1 hour
11

Therefore, the answer = 11 hours 11 minutes 2 seconds

b)

hour minute
2 15
5
10 75
+ 1 - 60
11 15

Therefore, the answer = 11 hours 15 minutes

2. Alices typing speed = 720 words in 12 minutes

In 1 minute she can type = 720 12
= 60 words
So, in 3 minutes she can type = 60 3
= 180 words
Therefore, Alice can type 180 words in 3 minutes.

The 12-hour and 24-hour system

- Time can be expressed in 12-hour system or 24-hour system

The 12-hour System

- using three or four digits with a dot
- abbreviation a.m.(ante meridiem) or p.m.(post meridiem) is usually used
Example: 4.45 a.m. Before noon

hours dot minutes

11.04 p.m. After noon

hours dot minutes

- a.m. = after 12 midnight until before 12 noon

- p.m. = after 12 noon until before 12 midnight

The 24-hour System

- expressed in four digits without any dot
- abbreviation a.m. and p.m. are not used in this system
- the time range is from 0000 hours to 2400 hours
Example:1532 (read as fifteen thirty two hours)

hours minutes

- both 0000 hours and 2400 hours can be used to denote midnight.
- When comparing the two systems, in both systems the values are similar from
morning to noon. But, from the afternoon to midnight, time values in the 24-hour
system are added by 12 hours.
o Example:
5.56 a.m. = 0556 hours
5.56 p.m. = (0556 + 1200) hours
= 1756 hours

Example 4
1. Express the following time in the 24-hour system
a) 3.45 a.m.
b) 11.37 p.m.
2. Express the following time in the 12-hour system
a) 0326 hours
b) 2224 hours
3. On Tuesday, Nurma took a express bus at 7.30 p.m.. The bus arrived at her
destination on Wednesday at 5.30 a.m.. How much time was taken by Ahmad to
complete her journey?

Solution
1.
a) 3.45 a.m. = 0345 hours
b) 11.37 p.m. = (1137 + 1200) hours
= 2337 hours
2.
a) 0326 hours = 3. 26 a.m.
b) 2224 hours = (2224 1200) hours
= 1024 hours
= 10.24 p.m.

3. The time taken from 7.30 p.m. to midnight (Tuesday) = 12.00 7.30
= 4 hours 30 minutes
The time taken from midnight to 5.30 a.m.(Wednesday) = 5 hours 30 minutes
Total time taken = 4 hours 30 minutes + 5 hours 30 minutes
= 10 hours

Test Yourself
1. 5 km 32 m 12 = km
2. 89 m 6 = .m cm
3. 5 kg 445 g 5 = kg
4. Change 35 888g into kg
5. If a car can travel 180 km 250 m in 3 hours. How far will the car travel in 5
hours?
