Aventilatorissimplyamachine,asystemofrelatedelementsdesignedtoalter,transmit,anddirectenergyinapredeterminedmannertoperformusefulwork.We
putenergyintotheventilatorintheformofelectricity(energy=voltsampstime)orcompressedgas(energy=pressurevolume).Thatenergyistransmitted
ortransformed(bytheventilatorsdrivemechanism)inapredeterminedmanner(bythecontrolcircuit)toaugmentorreplacethepatientsmusclesinperforming
theworkofbreathing.Thustounderstandmechanicalventilatorsingeneral,wemustfirstunderstandtheirbasicfunctions:(a)powerinput,(b)powertransmission
orconversion,(c)controlscheme,and(d)output.Thissimpleformatcanbeexpandedtoaddasmuchdetailasdesired(Table21).
