Personal Literacy History Assignment

My personal literacy history is kind of round trip that has two components since I am a
bilingual person. I am originally from Turkey and my mother language is Turkish. It has been
more than 5 years that I live in USA. I never thought that I was going to be able to speak one
more language other than my own language. Every story has something behind it and that story
is a cumulative of experiences like mine. I am a type of person who likes being outside and doing
sports forever. I am always watching sports and traveling to see new places and meet with new
people. When it comes to my literacy history, I would like to state that I am at good my literacy. I
was able to start reading when I was 6. According to my parents I started reading a lit bit earlier
than my classmates because my parents were always reading book at home. They were also read-
ing some kids book with me to help me learn reading quickly. With their help I was able to write
when I was in 2nd grade. I honestly did not like writing that much because of the letter m. For
some reason I was not able to write that letter out and that was my reason to not like writing that
much. It is obvious that people need help when they learn how to write and read. Since I am an
ESL person I most of the time read in Turkish. I like reading novels especially ones that are giv-
ing some social messages. The book that have impacted my literacy is called Yank
Budaylar (Burned Wheats) by Ahmet Gnbay Yldz. In that book he was mentioning about
the people and their educational problems that was taking place in Turkey during 60s. I really
liked to read that novel even it was more than 1000 pages long. I believe that literacy history of
are automatically improving. Another impact on my literacy history is writing stories in my Turk-
ish language art class. My teacher was requiring us to write a story for each week on whatever
topic that we like. At the beginning it was boring for me to write because I did not know how to
write story. After several classes and lectures, he taught us how to write story. In my opinion writ-
ing story is a big chance for people to improve their literacy skills. In addition this, the school
people go to is also affecting the literacy. For example my school was a good school and the
teachers and other students had a good literacy skills. They were writing and reading well. I could
say that the school that I have attended had a positive impact on my literacy history. I believe my
previous and current oral and written literacy experiences impacted my current attitudes, prac-
tices, uses and literacy instruction in the classroom. In classes I always try to make my students
think critically and talk about topic that we are learning at that time. This is a perfect opportunity
I also believe that my literacy history affects my teaching in positive way like I stated before. Since
I have a good literacy, I can explain the topic that I am teaching very well. I can also communi-
cate perfectly with my students. If there is a good communication then the audience or students
are more likely getting the message easily and they understand the person who is lecturing or
teaching.
Due to my literacy history, I will try to make sure that my students are doing what people with
good literacy have done earlier. I will be supporting them with variety of information to help
them increase their literacy skills. Students need explicit information and more visualization in
classes since they like to see then do whatever we ask them to do.
