Sangster wrote religious poetry and hymns
throughout her time as editor of BAZAR, as
well as pious stories for children. She brought
the same serious-mindedness to her editorship
as she had to her career as an author:The role
of editor, she observed, required concentration,
consecration and tireless energy. Sangsters era
included the serialised publication of Thomas
Hardys Tess of the dUrbervilles in 1891;
while another of her most notable issues, in
March 1896, was devoted to the subject of
bicycling for women, as a means of promoting
female independence.

L.A. down yet.When Im there I
try to stay in my hood. 12:00PM I
dont eat lunch. Ive never been a lady
who lunches. I eat a big breakfast and just go
through until dinner. Id like to get into the habit
of snacking. I keep some bananas around, and I
drink a ton of water. I keep water on both sides of
the bed, in my car, everywhere. Sometimes Ill eat the
odd pear. 2:00PM I dont have a typical afternoon. I
havent had a schedule, really, for 25 years, maybe more. I
spend time seeing friends, going to a movie, reading. If Im
in NewYork, I go to museums. I try to take care of all sorts
of business, which should include emails, but I am quite
remiss about all that. I have no social media whatsoever. Dont
like it. I try to check my emails once a month or, at most,
every couple of weeks. 7:00PM I eat dinner. I go out and
meet friends, or I eat alone with a book. Tonight Im going
out with Anna Deavere Smith. Shes an old friend, and shes
usually going in one direction and Im going in another, so
were always catching up. Im blessed with many great old
friends.They all do different things, but we keep finding one another. Its easier to cook in L.A. I dont know why;
I guess its because I have skylights everywhere. I have a little 1917 beach shack in Venice, and I have, like, seven
skylights. I make pasta usually, with some sort of tomato, mint, hot pepper and orange sauce.Thats a favourite. I
have a nice old kitchen with a giant 1934 Magic Chef stove, and I have friends who come over and cook for
me and cook with me. 11:00PM If Im stressed, Ill try to talk myself into a bath instead of a shower; I have
wonderful tubs and nice oils. If I have a night out with my friends, I am in bed around 11 or 12. Otherwise
Im in bed reading by 8. I read in bed even though they say its bad for you. I read everywhere I am.
I dont sleep easily without reading; Ive read up to eight hours in a single night. Its therapy;
mental travel. I read everything. Ive loved Mark Twain since I was a kid. Also Pound;
Cummings; Genghis Khan: Life, Death, and Resurrection, by John Man; and William S.

He shrugged. The old smile returned. Certain
kinds of people, especially perhaps boys from the

affirmation of his brightest dreams. I remember observing
Ghesquire at the end of the cruise show he did for

from a period of exhaustion, from a bruising encounter
with Balenciaga and a trial of self-questioning.The show
took place in a specially made glass box in front of the royal
palace. The runway was constructed of clear panels with
images of water flowing underneath. The new clothes looked
as if they carried the same pacific feel of a clean, easy tomorrow,
an optimism Ghesquire was willing into existence. When he
sprinted down the runway to take his applause, he seemed
almost shy of such optimism, but he was already living it.
As you get older, he told me, your sense of editing gets more

It was the crucial job interview of my 20s, and I had nothing to wear. My dream,
that summer of 1963, was to be hired by Eugenia Sheppard, the womens feature
editor of the New York Herald Tribune and the nations top fashion cop.Two things
I had been warned that Sheppard found unsightly: Old people and pregnant
women. I was young, but I was pregnant.Very.
I stayed up half the night before, sewing an orange-and-purple-striped
knockoff of a Marimekko tent dress. I remembered a pregnant Jacqueline
Kennedy wearing something like it during the 1960 presidential campaign.
That dress freed me to fake confidence. Sheppard even gave me a (back-
handed?) compliment on my choice.
Interesting colour combination.
I got the job.
Dont we all present a fake front in our 20s when were trying to

prime time for harlots. But I actually began to like my short
shorts and matching jackets and, yes, the high-heeled boots
that brought me up in the world. When that look later
rose from the streets into It girls closets, I started to trust
my instincts for dressing more freely, no matter how
old I was.
As a divorce, I began keeping company with a

I still remember the time I first dipped my finger into my mothers pot of Este Lauder Re-Nutriv face cream out of
curiosity. The year was 2004, I was 17 and wanted to find out why one tub cost as much as my monthly allowance.
Thanks to its rich texture, delicate scent and anti-ageing prowess, I quickly equated super expensive face creams as the
epitome of luxury skincare for the 40-something onwards.
Fast forward to the present day and it seems these fancy creams are no longer reserved for mature customers. For
the record, Im referring to the crme de la crme of skincare, consisting of face creams that easily cost $500 a pop.
According to Shaoyuan Han-Montillet, General Manager of Parfums Christian Dior, Singapore, the brand has noticed
a 24 percent growth in its Prestige skincare range among customers in their 30s.And Dior isnt alone in this. La Prairie
and Cl de Peau Beaut have also noticed significant changes in their customer base over the last couple of years:
Currently, at Dior, one in three are under the age of 40, while Cl de Peau Beaut has seen a 30 to 40 percent increase
of women under the age of 40 in their top spenders list. Cosme Decorte has also reported a steady increase of customers
under the age of 35 for its most expensive skincare range,AQ Meliority. All this points to a clear willingness of younger
women to splurge on premium products to fight ageing earlier on.
ER OW

(up to a few days versus a few hours).Active ingredients are usually the ones working the magic
and masks tend to contain an above-average level of active ingredients; thus, the improvements after
application are more visible, explains Dr PorYong Chen,Medical Director of Dream Aesthetics &
Plastic Surgery. However,if you have been sporadic with your usage, only slapping them on when
you need a quick-fix, its time to consider making them mainstays in your routine.A good face mask works as a great
complexion booster and you can use it to compensate any shortfalls of your skincare regime, Dr Por shares before
explaining that the efficacy of face masks comes down to the concentration of active ingredients (the higher the
concentration, the more visible the results) and the delivery method.
Dr Wilson Ho, Medical Director of NOVU Medical Aesthetic Holdings, says that face masks are effective because
they form a blanket over the skin, allowing the active ingredients to penetrate within. But not all face masks are created
equal, so its important to choose wisely. According to Dr Stephanie Ho, Consultant Dermatologist at Stephanie Ho
Dermatology, sheet masks that are made of high quality bio-cellulose or hydrogel masks enhance the penetration of
active ingredients into skin by forming skin-tight occlusion. This means that most of the essences are absorbed by our
skin instead of evaporating into the air, making them perfect for sealing in brightening, hydrating and calming ingredients.
On the other hand, clay masks are better for deep-cleansing or sebum-control properties because of their natural
absorption abilities, adds Dr Por.
If your main concern is hydration, look out for ingredients For those battling clogged pores and shine-prone skin,
like hyaluronic acid, glycerin and ceramides, advises Dr look out for products that are enriched with clay, as
