Editorial
Beware when fighting monsters that you do not become a monster.
If you stare long enough into the abyss, the abyss stares back at you.
Friedrich Nietzsche

Ive waited a long time to use this quote in the magazine. Im sure
when we were very young we all believed in monsters to some
extent. I know I did. I believed in ghosts, witches, monsters, and
the supernatural. I was a typical kid afraid of the dark, little able
to distinguish between the fantasy of my imagination and reality.
As a teenager, I once attended a great beach party, but then had to
walk back home. Walking four miles along a coastal path in near pitch darkness
cured me of my fear. My (mostly) rational mind would love to believe that theres
something supernatural, but another night at St Margarets Tower, Berry Pomeroy
Castle cured me of that, too. I saw nothing. No more ghosts.

So where are the real monsters? There may be nothing in Loch Ness, but an angry
lion or a hungry bear will take your life, given the opportunity. History is full of
monstrous people and the gross acts they have committed. However, by catego-
rizing them as such, we risk missing an important point. They were human just
like us and believed what they were doing was justified. In saying this, I dont
mean to excuse or pardon them. Instead, I offer a warning. Given a corrupted
morality or ideology, we are in danger of losing our humanity and doing the
same. When we fight extremism, we risk becoming extreme ourselves.

And what is our defence against monsters? History and education have a lot to offer us.
I always recommend reading around a subject and learning both sides of an argument.

Lets look forward to the next issue, when we are covering Russia in the Napole-
onic period and the conflicts it was involved in. Napoleon, move over! The Rus-
sian Bear is taking over for an issue.
