March saw the highest number of deals and total deal value in the past 12 months for emerging markets M&A. There were 769 deals totaling $60.5 billion in March. The largest deal was the $10.8 billion merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular. The financial and oil & gas sectors also had sizable deals in March. While March activity increased, overall Q1 2017 deal volume and value declined compared to the previous year.

IdeaCellular,inwhichthelocallycontrolledcompanywasvaluedat$10.8billion.

Asidefromthisexceptionallylargetelecomdeal,itwasthefinancialsectorthathadthe
biggesttransactionsoverallforatotalof$7.1billion,halfofwhichwasattributableto
domesticdealsinChinaandHongKong.Theoil&gassectorcamenextwithdealsworth
$6.5billionfollowingpurchasesofminorityinterestsinexplorationfieldsinMozambique
andRussia.

IPOsinChinaandHonkKongincreasedto58inMarchbutweresmallerinvalue
comparedtopreviousmonths.HouseholdappliancesmakerOppeinHomeGroupraised
$300millionfromitsflotationinShanghai,makingitthetopIPOthismonth,whileinIndia
retailerAvenueSupermarts(DMart)secured$280millionfromitsduallistingonNSEand
BSE.
