This 3-story multi-use building has an art studio Mansard
on the main floor, and residential space on the second roof
and third floor. The architectural style Second Empire
Patterned
was popular in the 1860s and 1870s. It is also called shingle roof
the French Second Empire style or Mansard style.
The style began in France, but was popular in the Decorative
United States at the same time. The design is window
contemporary modern, and was also called the surrounds
General Grant style. It is distinguished by its
crested mansard roof and elaborate detail. (PHMC)

Concept statement
The theme of the Stark residence is simple and restrained.
The Scandinavian and modern design style will complement the
Starks artistic and hip personalities.
The color palette will be centered around neutrals of
black and white that will emphasize both the Scandinavian, as
well as the modern style. There will be subtle hints of grey,
and splashes of earthy brown tones scattered throughout
the interior to bring in warmth and comfort.
the scandinavian style furniture has clean lines and is all
about simplicity. The textures are diverse with cool, crisp
leather furniture pieces mixed with the soft feel of wool
accents. The use of lines and geometric elements will help
create a modern atmosphere.

detection shall not be required.
CODE STUDY: Part II
Building codes are important in residential design for the protection of public health and safety, as
well as environmental protection. The codes integrated into a building at construction ensure the
buildings quality, safety and energy performance for the life of the building. (Dorsey)
Historical tragic events have taught us lessons on how to update the codes so there is a minimum
level of acceptable compliance of the building occupants life safety. In 1942 the Cocoanut Grove dinner
theater in Boston, MA caught fire and killed 491 people. This was due to many factors, such as an
excessive number of occupants, combustibility and flammability of the interior finish, and obstructed

furniture and walls. The artwork is very simple in design and geometric shapes to match with the Scandinavian and
modern design style. The accessories are from Scandinavian designs that are made simplistic as well. They are
made of natural materials and silver colors to go with the theme of the home.
