Developmental Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Hannah Stern Date: 3/6/17

Group Size: 20-25 Allotted Time 1 hour Grade Level 3rd grade

Subject or Topic: States of Matter

Common Core/PA Standard(s):

Standard 3.2.3.A1 Differentiate between the three states of matter, classifying a substance as a
solid, liquid, or gas.

Learning Targets/Objectives:
The third grade students will identify the properties of each state of matter by recording observations of
each sandwich bag on a worksheet.

Assessment Approaches: Evidence:

1. Formative Assessment 1. States of Matter worksheet answers

Assessment Scale:
Teacher will identify if students understand each state of matter using their States of Matter worksheet.

Rubric
3 points All three chosen examples for solids, liquids and gases are correct.
2 points 2 chosen examples are correct.
1 point 0-1 chosen examples are correct.

Subject Matter/Content:
Prerequisites: Understand that observing uses the 5 senses appropriately.
Key Vocabulary:
1. Solid Shape and volume do not change, they are fixed.
2. Liquid Substance that takes the shape of its container and stays the same volume.
3. Gas Takes the shape of the container and its volume will expand to fill the container.
Content/Facts:
1. Atoms are packed tightly together in solids, which makes it difficult to go through. For
example, you cannot walk through a solid wall unless something were to physically break its
shape.
2. Gases do not stay put because they are always moving.
3. Liquids cannot be handed to someone without a container.

Introduction/Activating/Launch Strategies: Have 3 sandwich bags set out on each groups desk to create
interest in the activity.
One bag with just air
One bag with ice
One bag with water

Development/Teaching Approaches
1. The teacher will explain to the students that they will be learning about the three states of
matter, which are solids, liquids and gases.
2. Tell the students that matter is anything and everything around us that takes up space. Give
examples such as a desk and water.
3. Begin by having the students watch the BrainPop video about the three states of matter.
4. After the video, discuss what each of the three states of matter are by making a chart on the
board. Each column will have one state of matter (solid, liquid, gas).
5. In each column, write the definition of each state of matter, while explaining what each means.
6. After doing this, give each student the observation worksheet.
7. Explain to the students that they will work in groups with the people at their table to make
observations of each of the 3 bags placed in the middle of the table. Have the students list the
state of matter for each bag on the worksheet along with their other observations. Observation
worksheet
8. As students are doing this, go to each table assisting them with their observations by asking
questions such as How does the bag with ice cubes feel when you hold it? and What do you
think would happen if you squeezed the bag with air?
9. When students finish making observations, allow students to raise their hand and discuss their
observations of one of the bags and which state of matter goes with that particular bag and
why.
10. Next, go back to the chart created on the board and ask students for examples of each state of
matter, while listing these examples.
11. After listing examples, tell the students that each group will find three things in the classroom
that is an example of each of the three states of matter and bring it to their table.
- An example of a solid could be a pencil.
- An example of a liquid could be a water in a water bottle or from the sink.
- Because gases would be difficult, tell students that as a group they can draw an example of
a gas such as a balloon that has air in it, which is gas (they can use the chart that lists
examples for ideas).
12. Instruct them to fill out the States of Matter worksheet.
13. After all the groups finish gathering their examples, let each group show the class what they
chose for each state of matter and why that particular example fits using the properties.

Closure/Summarizing Strategies: Then, end with a picture of slime. Explain to the students that this
picture is a clue to the activity they will be doing the next day. Allow some student to guess what they
will be learning about the next day using the picture.
(Non-Newtonian Fluid solid + liquid)

Accommodations/Differentiation:
If I have a student with a visual impairment, I will have the student sit closer to the screen when
playing the BrainPop video. Depending on severity visual impairment, a student with the ability to see
will benefit from sitting closer to the screen and students with no visual ability will be able to hear the
video at its best. When writing observations, the student will verbally say their observations out loud
and another student in the group can record their observations on the same paper together.
Materials/Resources:
1. States of Matter BrainPop video -
https://www.brainpop.com/science/matterandchemistry/statesofmatter/
2. 20 - Observation Worksheets
3. 3 sandwich bags per table, sealed and labeled with a number.
(20 students 5 groups altogether with 4 students in each about 5 of each sandwich bag)
- First sandwich bag will have water in it.
- Second sandwich bag will have ice in it.
- Third sandwich bag will have air in it.
4. 5 trays one for each table and the three bags will be placed on top
5. 20 - States of Matter worksheets

Reflective Response:
Report of Student Learning Target/Objectives Proficiency Levels

Remediation Plan (if applicable)

Personal Reflection Questions

1. How could I change the lesson if I were to do this again?
2. Did the students meet the objectives?
