Tutorial 6 DC Motor

This document contains 4 problems related to DC motors: 1. A DC shunt motor has a back EMF of 189 V, develops 37.3 kW of power at full load, and produces 203.5 Nm of torque. 2. A DC series motor operates at 520 V, has a back EMF of 453.75 V, and produces 12 Nm of torque at 3560 rpm. 3. A 15 kW DC shunt motor will operate at 1160 rpm under full load conditions. 4. Inserting a resistance of 86.53 Ω into the field circuit of a 200 V shunt motor will increase its speed from 500 rpm to 700 rpm under constant

Tutorial - DC Motor

1. A voltage of 230 V is applied to armature of a d.c. shunt motor results in a

full-load armature current of 205 A. The armature resistance is 0.2 .
Determine the:
a. Back EMF.
b. Output power developed by the motor if the rotational losses are 1445
W.
c. Torque at full-load speed of 1750 rpm.

[189 V, 37.3 kW, 203.5 Nm]

2. A d.c. series motor consumes a 6.5 kW when it draws the armature current of
12.5 A. The armature resistance and field resistances are 3.3 and 2
respectively. Calculate:
a. The supply voltage.
b. Back EMF.
c. Torque developed if the speed is 3560 rpm, by assuming the stray loss
as 1.2 kW.

[520 V, 453.75 V, 12 Nm]

3. A 15 kW dc shunt motor has armature and field winding resistances of 0.25

and 200 respectively. Its no-load speed is 1200 rpm and it draws a current
of 10 A when connected across a 300 V source. Calculate the speed of the
motor at full load. Assume that there is no change of flux from no-load to full-
load.

[1160 rpm]

4. A 200 V shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.4 and a field resistance
of 200 . When driving a load of constant torque at 500 rpm, the armature
takes 25 A. What resistance must be inserted into the shunt field circuit, to
increase the speed from 500 to 700 rpm, assuming the magnetisation curve to
be linear?
