Tutorial Sheet – 09

1. A shunt generator has an induced voltage on open-circuit of 127 V. When the machine is on load
the terminal voltage is 120 V. Find the load current if the field-circuit resistance is 15 Ω and the
armature resistance is 0.02Ω. Ignore armature reaction. [342 A]

2. A separately excited generator, when running at 1200 rev per min, supplies 200 A at 125 V to a
circuit of constant resistance. What will be the current when the speed is dropped to 1000 rev per
min if the field current is unaltered? Armature resistance is 0.04Ω, total drop at brushes is 2 V
and ignore change in armature reaction. [166.16 A]

3. A long-shunt, compound generator delivers a load current of 50 A at 500 V, and has armature,
series-field and shunt-field resistances of 0.05Ω, 0.03 Ω and 250 Ω respectively. Calculate the
generated EMF and the armature current. Allow 1 V per brush for contact drop.[506.16 V, 52 A]

4. A shunt machine, connected to 250 V supply, has an armature resistance (including brushes) of
0.12 Ω, and the resistance of the field circuit is 100Ω. Find the ratio of the speed as generator to
the speed as a motor, the line current in each case being 80 Amperes. [1.08]

5. A series motor of resistance (armature + field) 1 Ω runs at 800 rev per min at 200 V with a
current of 15 A. Find the speed at which it will run when a 5 Ω resistor is connected in series
with armature and taking the same current at the same supply voltage. [475.7 RPM]

6. A 200 V shunt motor develops 23 h. p. when taking 20.2 kW power. The field resistance is 50 Ω
and armature resistance 0.06Ω. What is the efficiency and the power input when the output is 10
h. p.. (take 1h.p. = 746 W). [74.2%, 10.04 kW]

7. A 250 V d.c. Shunt motor on no-load runs at 1000 RPM and takes 5 A. The armature (including
brushes) and shunt field resistances are 0.2 Ω and 250 Ω respectively. Calculate the speed when
motor loaded and taking a current of 50 A, if armature reaction weakens the field by 3%.
[993.7 RPM]

8. A 220 V d.c. shunt motor has an armature resistance of 0.5 Ω is excited to give constant main
field. At full load motor runs at 500 RPM and takes an armature current of 30 A. If a resistance
of 1Ω is placed in the armature circuit, find the speed at (a) full load torque (b) double of full
load torque. [426.8 RPM, 317 RPM]

9. A 240 V series motor takes 40 A when giving its rated output at 1500 RPM. Its resistance
(armature + field) is 0.3 Ω. Find what resistance must be added to obtain rated torque at (a)
starting (b) 1000 RPM. [ 5.7 Ω, 1.9 Ω]
