FAQs for PYP Teachers

What is the Primary Years Program?

The Primary Years Program (PYP) is an International Baccalaureate program
designed for children age 3 - 12 that focuses on the development of the whole child
in the classroom and in the world outside. The program uses guided (teacher
supported) inquiry as a way of learning.

How will students learn?

The Primary Years Program uses a guided inquiry approach to student learning
that involves students in questioning, exploration, research, and critical thinking
with the guidance of their teacher.

How are students assessed?

The main objective of assessment in the PYP is to provide feedback on the
learning process. Teachers and students are actively engaged in assessing student
progress. Self-reflection is an important component of on-going assessment and
final assessments for each unit of inquiry. This approach recognizes the importance
of assessing the process of inquiry as well as the products of inquiry.

What are my roles as the PYP Teacher?

As a PYP Teacher, I will need to plan the curriculum using the Unit Planner and
use the Inquiry Cycle to guide my students in the inquiry-based learning. I will
work together with my students and other Community of Learners in the school to
make sure that everybody is learning new things every day. We do this by
collaborative planning and sharing of information.
