Lesson Description:
The teacher will begin by reading a read aloud book to the class related to Remembrance
Day/soldiers/peace. After a discussion on the topic and review on how to write a letter,
students will write a letter to a Canadian soldier for Remembrance Day.
Materials/Resources: Considerations:
● Read aloud book (A Poppy is to Provide examples of letters *below
Remember/Peace) This lesson can take place over a few classes
● Chart paper so students have enough time to complete it.
● Variety of paper (for good copy)
● Letter template
● English notebooks
● Pencil
Accommodations:
● Provide examples and letter templates
● Help students organize their ideas
● The letter can be as long or short as students desire
Assessment:
● Observation
● Success criteria checklist
● Letters (evidence)
Motivational Hook/Intro:
● Read aloud book about Remembrance Day/peace
● Discuss Remembrance Day -When is it? What is it? Why is it important?
● Tell students they will be writing letters to thank military members for their hard work
Activity:
● Invite students to sit on the carpet
● Show an example of a letter and ask students to identify components of a letter
○ Heading, greeting, body, closing, signature
● Brainstorm what students can write about in their letters (write on chart paper as a
class)

Share a little about yourself
(Name, age, city. Your family, sports, weather, hobbies, music, movies, pets)
Express your thanks for their service
(Bravery, courage, dedication, protection, keeping us safe, bringing peace, etc.)
“Sincerely, …”
● Students will write a rough draft of their letter in their english notebook
● Students will write a good copy on their choice of paper or the template provided
Closing/Extensions:
● Draw a picture to send with your letter
● Send the letters in the mail
Extensions: research the many different duties of military members, interview a military
member
