BACKGROUND
Some 40 Million tons of reusable plastic cutleries are thrown away every year.
Most of them are thrown after single use. This plastic can take up to 1,000 years
to break down in the environment. Meanwhile, they collecting our oceans, adding
to an already long list of environmental concerns we face today.
As you are aware plastic contain complexes, several of which are neurotoxic and
carcinogenic. These leach into food. In fact, even the so called food grade cutlery
is that, where the leaching is living permissible levels of 60 parts per million
(ppm). When you know that the substances that leach can cause cancer and
impact your nervous system, why should we allow even one part per million!
Plastic are graded into 7 types. These are graded from No. 1 to No. 7. Amongst
which 2, 3 & 5 are okay for limited use but, 1, 3, 6, & 7 (polycarbonate) are to be
avoided. The plastic spoons and forks used for eating are made up of No. 1 grade
plastic. No. 1 grade plastics are made up of Polyethylene Terephthalate
(PET/PETE) which is a kind of polyester. The longer the PET is left in liquid the
faster it leaches Antimony which is used as catalyst and flame retardant in PET. As
well as, warm temperature fastens the leaching process. Ingestion of higher
amount of Antimony exhibits respiratory problems and skin irritation, and among
females, it results in menstrual problems and miscarriages- while there are no
evidences regarding these problems due to small amounts of Antimony released
from PET products (such as water bottles), we prefer not to be exposed to it at all.
There are many options available in the cutlery but the most used are the plastic
cutlery. But now there is one more alternative available which is not only healthy
and nutritive but also eco-friendly at the same time.
Narayana Peesapaty, started a kick-starter campaign of edible cutlery in
Hyderabad in 2010. With a background in forest management, Peesapaty
previously worked at the International Water Management Institute’s crop
research center and says he wanted to use a raw material that won’t put much
pressure on water resources. For this reason Narayana Peesapaty invented the
edible cutlery which will help reduce the use of water for cleaning the cutlery and
instead consuming it.
The edible cutlery is made of flours of Jowar (Sorghum) blended with rice and
wheat. They contain no chemicals/preservatives/fat/plasticizes, emulsifiers,
artificial color or milk products. In fact they contain nothing that is not a plant
product (except salt, which is added for taste). They can also be made gluten free
and with many other grains that are easily available in other countries. None of
them will need preservatives or emulsifiers or fat at all. They are simply baked in
high temperatures. It is 100% natural, biodegradable/ vegetarian and Vegan.
These edible spoons are available in different tastes too- sweet, savoury and
plain. These products come with nutrition and disintegrate in less than 3 days, if
you throw them on moist soil or pour water on it. While plastic ones can be
brought back to market with a wash, these are single time use product. So, with
these products, you can be sure that you are the first to be putting into your
mouth and not like those plastic ones which might have already been put in
someone else’s mouth!
They also have plans of introducing other cutlery products like the forks, soup
spoons, dessert spoons and even chopsticks.
They would also be introducing the salad bowls, all of which were made at
prototype scale and waiting for each shape to come up one by one within 2017.
Everything is custom made and designed locally.
