Curriculum Expectation:
Demonstrate an understanding that plants grow and change and have distinct
characteristics. (pg. 70)
Specific Expectations:
2.5 use scientific inquiry/experimentation skills (see page 12), and knowledge
acquired from previous investigations, to investigate a variety of ways in which
plants meet their basic needs
2.7 use a variety of forms (e.g., oral, written, graphic, multimedia) to communicate
with different audiences and for a variety of purposes (e.g., make illustrated entries
in a personal science journal to describe plant characteristics and adaptations to
harsh environments)
3.3 describe the changes that different plants undergo in their life cycles
Resources:
Safety Consideration:
• Remind the students the water stays in the cups or on the plants, if water gets on the
floor, it needs to be cleaned up before anyone slips on it
Teaching Activities:
Introductory activity:
• Ask the students “What do you know about plants” and write their ideas
on the board
• Play Youtube video (3.46 minutes):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkFPyue5X3Q&list=PL_J-
AyLJZjWCV8hONkunXn6RdvQfVX65N&index=1
• Hand out worksheet, have a volunteer read each section (Seed, Sprout,
Seedling, Adult Plant)
• Ask the students to make predictions (draw in the circles provided on the
worksheet) on what the plant will look like at each step in the cycle
Development strategies:
• Planting:
• Explain to the students we are going to plant our own seeds and
observe them throughout the next couple weeks
• Going outside to plant
• Give each student a Styrofoam cup and have the students shovel dirt
into their cups
• Randomly give students different types of seeds
• Have students dig a little hole in soil, sprinkle seeds, push into
soil/cover seeds with soil, water seeds (explain each step before
handing out cups)
• Remind students of safety concerns (see above)
• Give students “Watching Seeds Grow” worksheet and have them fill
out the first box
Concluding activity:
Evaluation:
• Hand in copies of their prediction sheet
• Observational during lesson and concluding activity
Modifications:
Extension:
• Throughout the lesson we will add to the “Watching Seeds Grow” worksheet
Follow-up Ideas:
• Throughout the unit, we will refer back to the “Watching Seeds Grow” worksheet
dating when the plant begins to grow and becomes an adult plant
• Sing the song throughout the lesson to ensure learning
• Review the stages again with the body movement
• Discuss what plants need
• Use computers to explore more about plants (either a topic of their choosing, or an
assigned topic like photosynthesis)
Lesson Plan 2
Curriculum Expectation:
Demonstrate an understanding that plants grow and change and have distinct
characteristics. (pg. 70)
Specific Expectations:
3.1 describe the basic needs of plants, including air, water, light, warmth, and space
Resources:
• Photosynthesis worksheet
• Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUBIQ1fTRzI
Teaching Activities:
Introductory activity:
• Ask the students “what do plants need to survive?”
• Write ideas on the board
Development strategies:
• What Plants need:
• Show Students this song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUBIQ1fTRzI
and repeat song afterwards
For a Plant to Stay Alive
It needs 5 things I would not lie
It needs water so it can grow
And it needs warmth so you know
Plants need space they can’t be tight
The sun helps plants by giving light
Don’t forget to give plants air
Repeat the needs if you dare
Need 1: water
Need 2: warmth
Need 3: light
Need 4: space
Need 5: air
Concluding activity:
• Ask the students to name something they learned
Evaluation:
Modifications:
Extension:
Follow-up Ideas:
Curriculum Expectation:
Demonstrate an understanding that plants grow and change and have distinct
characteristics. (pg. 70)
Specific Expectations:
3.1 describe the basic needs of plants, including air, water, light, warmth, and space
3.4 describe how most plants get energy to live directly from the sun
Resources:
• Photosynthesis worksheet
• Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1Ymc311XS8
Teaching Activities:
Introductory activity:
• Ask students what plants need and sing song again
For a Plant to Stay Alive
It needs 5 things I would not lie
It needs water so it can grow
And it needs warmth so you know
Plants need space they can’t be tight
The sun helps plants by giving light
Don’t forget to give plants air
Repeat the needs if you dare
Need 1: water
Need 2: warmth
Need 3: space
Need 4: light
Need 5: air
• Ask students where the plants get their food?
Development strategies:
• Photosynthesis:
• Photosynthesis | The Dr. Binocs Show | Learn Series For Kids --
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1Ymc311XS8
• Hand out Photosynthesis worksheet
• Read over together, and complete the diagram in the bottom
individually
• Draw Diagram on board and take it up
• Parts of plants
• Read through “parts of plants” worksheet together and pointing
out all of the parts on the fake flower
• Have the students complete the diagram and return to the carpet
to take it up
• Read through “parts of a flower” worksheet and point out each
part on the fake flower
• Have students complete diagram and return to carpet
Concluding activity:
Curriculum Expectation:
Demonstrate an understanding that plants grow and change and have distinct
characteristics. (pg. 70)
Specific Expectations:
3.8 identify examples of environmental conditions that may threaten plant and
animal survival
Resources:
Teaching Activities:
Introductory activity:
• Sing plants need song:
For a Plant to Stay Alive
It needs 5 things I would not lie
It needs water so it can grow
And it needs warmth so you know
Plants need space they can’t be tight
The sun helps plants by giving light
Don’t forget to give plants air
Repeat the needs if you dare
Need 1: water
Need 2: warmth
Need 3: space
Need 4: light
Need 5: air
• Remind students they need all these things in moderation, just like how
we can’t eat too much food
• Write the word “adaptation” on the board and have students explain what
it means
• Adaptation: The process by which a species becomes better suited to its
environment
Development strategies:
• On the carpet:
• google pictures of each land and have the students guess what the
plants need to survive in these areas (ex. Large water supply in
desert, large leaves to soak up sun in wetlands, etc.)
▪ Tundra
▪ Wetlands
▪ Jungle
▪ Desert
• Go through the worksheet and guess the answers
• Independent work:
• Hand out worksheet that is separated into the four land sections
and have the students using the worksheet and pictures they saw
to draw what they think the plants would look like in that
environment
Concluding activity:
Curriculum Expectation:
Demonstrate an understanding that plants grow and change and have distinct
characteristics. (pg. 70)
Specific Expectations:
1.1 assess ways in which plants are important to humans and other living things,
taking different points of view into consideration
3.5 describe ways in which humans from various cultures, including Aboriginal
people, use plants for food, shelter, medicine, and clothing
3.7 describe the different ways in which plants are grown for food
Resources:
• Dandelion Muffins
• Plant use worksheets
Teaching Activities:
Introductory activity:
• Write out observations for plants – hand out plants

Development strategies:
• Plant Use:
• Hand out “How we use plants” workshee
• Split into seven groups and give each group a topic (food,
medicine, housing, clothi
• ng, electricity, trees, corn) and give those students half a piece of
chart paper
• Have the student summarize that part using point form and
presenting what they found
