after Witchcraft, O~cnclesand Magic1

ITistorians and aathropologists have a conllnon interest in the

subject of witchcraft, but until very recerltly their outlooks have
diverged. Historians dealirig with si~teent~h- micl seventeenth-
coiit~ryEurope or Massachusetts cannot but see witchcraft ax
p r t of a, cum~llaitiveprocess with frequeritly a, violent and tragic
climax. Its scale may not have nlatclied the religious persecu-
tions of earlier times, but it is difficult not to see i t in Europe ns
another scourge, a destructive belief liable to run away wit11
reason, as Norman Gohn corlvilicingly slzows below. The a n t h o -
pologists of the 1950s developed insights into tlie fulictiorliiig of
witch beliefs which seemed about as relevant to the Etzropean
experierlce as if they came from another planet. Darigerous in
Europe, the ssine beliefs in Melanesia or Africa apyjeared to be
tame, ever1 d~rnesticat~ed; they served useful furictlio~is nncl were
riot expected to run amuck.
I s the difiFerelluc objectively valid? Does it really result ikon1
