Procedure:: R'-Firing Circuit: The Resistance Rmin Is Used To Limit The Gate Current To Its

The document describes a procedure for observing waveforms and voltages using a CRO and DC voltmeter across a load by varying a potentiometer. The same procedure is then repeated for RC and UJT triggering circuits. Precautions are given to never connect a thyristor across the supply without a current limiting resistor or short circuit the load to prevent excess currents and damage. The theory section explains that a minimum resistance Rmin is used in an R-firing circuit to limit the gate current to its maximum value based on the peak supply voltage and maximum gate current.

PROCEDURE:

1) The connections are made as per the circuit diagram.

2) The CRO and DC voltmeter are connected across the load.
3) The supply is switched ON.
4) By varying the potentiometer the waveforms are observed.
5) The corresponding voltages are noted down.
6) The same procedure is repeated for RC and UJT triggering also.

PRECAUTIONS:

1) Never connect the thyristor across the supply when gate is ON because
there is no current limiting resistor and excess currents may flow
through the resistor.
2) Never short circuit the load because it causes large currents and charges
the device.

THEORY:

‘R’-Firing circuit: The resistance Rmin is used to limit the gate current to its
maximum value. If Ig(max) is the maximum gate current and Vm is the peak
supply voltage, then Rmin is given by

Rmin >= (Vm/ Ig(max))
