Stoich Lab Report-2

The purpose of the lab was to synthesize magnesium oxide and determine percent yield. Magnesium and oxygen were reacted according to the equation 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO. The theoretical yield of magnesium oxide was calculated to be 0.18g based on the mass of magnesium used. The experimental yield was measured to be 0.21g, resulting in a percent yield of 120%. Sources of error included improperly zeroing the balance and taking measurements when the crucible was too hot.

Stoichiometry Lab
Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to synthesize magnesium oxide and determine percent
yield.
Procedure: The procedure that was followed was from Stoichiometry of Magnesium Oxide.
Data: 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO

Object Mass (g)

Mass of Crucible 12.20g
Mass of Magnesium 0.11g
Mass of Crucible and Magnesium 12.31g
Mass of Magnesium Oxide and Crucible Trial 1 12.43g
Mass of Magnesium Oxide and Crucible Trial 2 12.41g
Percent Yield 120%
Experimental Yield 0.21g
Theoretical Yield 0.18g

Calculations:
1. Mass of Magnesium = Mass of crucible and Magnesium – Mass of crucible
0.11g = 12.31g – 12.20g

0.11g Mg 1 Mole Mg 2 Moles MgO 40.3g MgO

24.3g Mg 2 Moles Mg 1 Mole
MgO

2. Theoretical yield of Magnesium Oxide =

1 𝑀𝑜𝑙𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑀𝑎𝑔𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑀𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑀𝑎𝑔𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑂𝑥𝑖𝑑𝑒
Mass of Magnesium × 𝐴𝑡𝑜𝑚𝑖𝑐 𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑀𝑎𝑔𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑢𝑚 × ×
𝑀𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑀𝑎𝑔𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑢𝑚
𝑀𝑜𝑙𝑒𝑐𝑢𝑙𝑎𝑟 𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑀𝑎𝑔𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑂𝑥𝑖𝑑𝑒
1 𝑚𝑜𝑙𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑀𝑎𝑔𝑛𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑢𝑚 𝑂𝑥𝑖𝑑𝑒

= 0.18g MgO

3. Experimental Yield of Magnesium Oxide = Mass of Magnesium Oxide and the crucible
after trial two – Mass of crucible
0.21g MgO = 12.41g MgO – 12.20g
𝐸𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑌𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑀𝑔𝑂
4. Percent Yield of Magnesium Oxide = × 100
𝑇ℎ𝑒𝑜𝑟𝑒𝑡𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑌𝑖𝑒𝑙𝑑 𝑜𝑓 𝑀𝑔𝑂
0.21𝑔 𝑀𝑔𝑂
120% = 0.18𝑔 𝑀𝑔𝑂 × 100

Conclusion:
The experiment resulted in the synthesis of 0.11g of Magnesium with an excess amount

of Oxygen to form 0.21 grams of magnesium oxide. The percent yield of this lab was 120%

because the theoretical yield was 0.18g while the experimental yield was 0.21 grams.

Sources of Error:
There were two sources of error that could have been made during the stoichiometry lab. The

percent yield could have been over one-hundred percent because the triple-beam-balance may

not have been zeroed properly. In addition, the crucible may have been too hot when the

measurement was taken. This could have resulted in an inaccurate mass due to convection.
