UNIVERSITY OF WATERLOO

Department of Mechanical & Mechatronics Engineering

ME 770 Experimental Methods in Fluid Mechanics
Winter 2018

Course Policies and Procedures

Instructor:   Dr. S. D. Peterson
ERC 3007;  ext. 38722; peterson@uwaterloo.ca

Textbook: Tavoularis, S. Measurement in Fluid Mechanics, Cambridge
ISBN: 9780521815185

Van Dyke, M. An Album of Fluid Motion, Parabolic
ISBN: 9780915760022

Other graduate and undergraduate fluid mechanics texts by, for example, Panton,
White, Batchelor, etc. may be of use. In addition, techniquespecific books, such as
Particle Image Velocimetry by Willert et al. may be useful.

Prerequisites: The   material   in   ME   770   assumes   familiarity   with   undergraduate   fluid   mechanics
principles and engineering mathematics.

Course Outline: It   is   the   goal   of   ME   770   to   familiarize   the   student   with   experimental   practices,
methodologies, and techniques in the thermal sciences.  Topics include an overview of experimental
design and uncertainly; flow visualization techniques; steady and unsteady pressure measurement;
fluid velocimetry; and wall shear stress techniques.

Grading: Grading will  be based upon a  series  of projects  over the  course of the  semester,

including one term project, as well as a midterm and a cumulative final exam. The approximate
grading scale is:

Small projects/homework 35%
Term project 25%
Midterm exam 15%
Final exam  25%

Small Projects: Several small projects/homework assignments will be assigned over the course of the
semester on the various topics covered in lecture. All projects are to be performed individually and
each person should submit their own report. Plagiarism or any other form of cheating will result in
immediate failure of the course and escalation to the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Term Project: For the semester project the student must propose and conduct a fluid mechanics
experiment. The experiment can be related to your topic and project, though it should stand alone
and be reasonable to complete in one semester. Note that it is not required that the experiment be
related to a thesis topic, but the onus will be on the student for procuring any necessary equipment.

The overall project grade will be based upon the quality of the written report (written in journal
style) and oral presentation, depth of analysis, and technical correctness. Note that while the web is a
great tool, despite popular perception, Google does not know everything.  Rather, focused searches
using scientific citation indexes and some time in the library will provide far more researchgrade
information. Examples of scientific citation indexes available are Scopus and ISI Web of Science.

Exams: There will be a midterm  exam during one of the lecture slots  (approximately  1.5

hours). There will also be a 2.5 hour cumulative final exam.

List of Topics: The tentative  list of topics  to be covered in this  course are: experimental  design,

analysis and uncertainty, flow visualization, laser Doppler velocimetry, particle image velocimetry,
hotwire anemometry,  pressure measurement, and wall shear stress measurement. This list can be
adjusted based upon class interest.
