    Math 107 Online Gateway Tips

    ALWAYS use the PREVIEW link to double-check what your answers really look like.

    You can use ∗ for multiplication (optional, but helps); ^ for powers; ln, sin, cos, tan, arctan, arcsin for the
    corresponding functions; pi for π ≈ 3.14159265..., and e for e ≈ 2.71828 . . ..
    For ex you may enter either e^ x or exp(x)

    Inverse trig functions can also be entered as, for example, sin^ (-1)(x) for arcsin(x).
    √
    x could be entered as either sqrt(x) or x^ (1/2)

    Common Gateway Errors

    I. Parentheses in products, quotients, and exponents. Remember that 1+x2 is supposed to be

    1/ ( 1+x^ 2 )

    Without the parentheses, that would be interpreted as 1 + x2 .

    Likewise, “1/2x” means 2 · x. If you need 2x , then type

    1/(2x) or 1/(2*x) or (2*x)^ (-1), etc.

    e^ x^ 2 would be read as (ex )2 ; if you need ex instead, the input must be

    e^(x^ 2)

    II. Parentheses around the argument of a function.

    If you type in “ sin 2*x” that would be interpreted as (sin 2) · x. If you would like sin(2x), then use

    sin(2x)

    Similarly, “e^ 2 x” without any parentheses results in (e2 )x, or, for example, just “sin 3+x” means (sin 3) + x.

    III. Powers of trig functions. If you enter “tan^ 2(x)” that would be interpreted as (tan(x))2 . The same result if you
    type in “(tan(x))^ 2”.

    However, if you input tan^ (-1)(x), then it will become arctan(x). If you actually need tan(x) then use 1/tan(x) or
    (tan(x))^ (-1)
    IV. Indefinite integrals. Do not (for once) add “+C” in your answers. Also, pay attention to what the variable of integration
    is. It is not always “x”, could be any of y, t, z, v, w, etc.
    V. Definite integrals. You won’t be permitted to use a calculator, but remember that you do not have to enter answers in
    decimal notation. For example, “sin(1)+sqrt(1357)-pi+e^ 2” is acceptable.
