Evidence:
i) Identifying or defining a problem, opportunity or project:
I took on a project to define the detailed technical scope for the development of an updated
applet for the calculation of product properties and performance in use. In this project I:
- Reviewed the existing applet with in-house and external users of the applet,
alongside products being offered by competitor manufacturers
- Defined key functionality and design requirements of the applet (e.g. appearance
inline with company website, navigation requirements, calculations available, help
requirements, output format etc)
- Established method for linking the calculations to third-party software to allow a
future-proof method of updating physical property data inputs
- Checked and modified required calculations to be consistent with international
standards definitions
- Wrote an Excel model with VB link macros to act as the validation tool for the applet –
this had to be user friendly so that non-chemical engineer programmers could follow
through the calculations and see the route to the numerical and graphical outputs
- Wrote the full User-Requirement-Specification for the applet, which was passed to
external consultancy programmers for fixed-price costing
In addition, in the last year I have also been responsible for identifying and initiating a project
through an academic consortium for improvement of our supply chain forecasting.
ii) Combining ideas and contributions from different people and disciplines:
I spent several months developing the process design package for a commercial scale
solvent extraction plant. In this project I organised meetings with company chemistry and
engineering experts and pilot rig operations staff to develop detailed process data sheets for
all vessels and equipment required. An example included the design of a large jacketed-
vaporiser vessel where I had to ensure that my design had the required heating duty/ surface
area; was constructed from appropriate materials for pressure and hygiene requirements; had
suitable level/ temperature control; could be accessed quickly and easily for product
harvesting; could be cleaned easily; was constructed from as many off-the-shelf items as
possible to minimise cost; and was safe to operate with appropriate pressure relief.
In addition to this major design work I have co-ordinated multi-discipline teams for the
modification of large scale industrial equipment and in my current role I lead regular
operations and rig improvement meetings for the development of R&D extraction rigs
(attended by operators, chemists, commercial managers and project managers).
iii) Creativity and innovation: developing your own ideas to produce new solutions,
new designs and new technological approaches:
iv) Scientific or technical evaluation and optimisation (of product, process, equipment,
method, project etc against the requirements you identified, or the brief you were
given.):
I was project manager for the re-commissioning of an extraction rig and associated facilities.
This involved:
- Establishing overall goals and timeline required to meet customer plans and logistics
- Identifying project risks and mitigation requirements
- Development of Gantt chart plan and weekly task list updates (with filters for urgency
and ownership of actions)
- Liasing with previous management and operation staff to arrange training for new ops
team
- Liasing with safety team to update, re-test and re-issue safety documentation (inc
COSHH, HEA, legionella assessment, relief systems, access equipment, electrical
systems)
- Supervision of technical trouble-shooting (leak testing, sourcing missing parts)
- Arranging for re-implementation of associated lab analysis methods and systems
- Arranging logistics for raw material & product delivery and handling
- Ownership for communication with customer and internal business (inc customer visit
to observe trial)
- Cost budgeting and monitoring for invoicing customer
Re-commissioning was a success and lead to follow-up on product and further trials with
other customers.
B Evidence that you are able to handle the wider implications of your
work as an engineer
i) Ability to handle health, hazard and safety aspects: to apply appropriate principles,
good practice, meet legislative requirements etc.
As team leader and line manager for physical properties team and extraction operations,
- I arranged HAZOP assessments for large and lab scale plants (also participated as
process engineering rep)
- I co-ordinated risk assessments, legionella assessments, equipment trials and audits
(inc housekeeping, SHE assurance, noise, SHE dossier)
ii) Ability to handle sustainability aspects: these could include environmental, public
concern and other societal issues, recognition of risks etc.
- I have acted as the industrial contact for new extraction technology in an independent
benchmarking study for technologies to extract a compound for malarial drugs
- I have assessed direct and indirect impacts of extraction technology
- In extraction plant design, I have produced summary reports of total environmental
emissions and energy requirements
- I took an MSc module on Sustainability and Environmental Reporting at UMIST
- I represented the company at conferences such as Biorefineries & Renewable
Materials, and Green Chemistry events
In addition,
- I am the Industrial supervisor for PhD project at Imperial College
- I managed CAPE OPEN developments of our in-house software linked to third party
software (Eutech PEL, NEL software and Aspen Tech)
- I am the company representative at an academic-industrial consortium
As part of my team and line management for the extraction and physical property areas I
have been responsible for:
- Regular team and individual meetings
- Personal reviews (6 different direct-reports)
- Competency reviews and establishment of training areas
- Technical leadership for extraction trials and physical property modelling
- Arrangement of training
I have gained additional leadership experience through the project management of extraction
projects.
