INDUSTRY OVERVIEW
WHAT IS STOCK MARKET?
A stock market or equity market is a public market (a loose network of
economic transactions, not a physical facility or discrete entity) for the
trading of company stock and derivatives at an agreed price; these are
securities listed on a stock exchange as well as those only traded
privately.

WHAT IS STOCK EXCHANGE?

 A stock exchange is an entity which provides "trading" facilities for stock
brokers and traders, to trade stocks and other securities. Stock
exchanges also provide facilities for the issue and redemption of
securities as well as other financial instruments and capital events
including the payment of income and dividends. The securities traded
on a stock exchange include shares issued by companies, unit trusts,
derivatives, pooled investment products and bonds.

 To be able to trade a security on a certain stock exchange, it has to be

listed there. Usually there is a central location at least for
recordkeeping, but trade is less and less linked to such a physical place,
as modern markets are electronic networks, which gives them
advantages of speed and cost of transactions. Trade on an exchange is
by members only.
P a g e | 35

 The initial offering of stocks and bonds to investors is by definition done

in the primary market and subsequent trading is done in the secondary
market. A stock exchange is often the most important component of a
stock market. Supply and demand in stock markets is driven by various
factors which, as in all free markets, affect the price of stocks (see stock
valuation).
P a g e | 36

DIFFERENT SEGMENTS OF STOCK MARKET

BSE & NSE
 NSE Stands for National Stock Exchange. It has more than 2000 stocks
from different sectors listed with it. It is fully automated electronic
order processing exchange. Nifty is major index of NSE and it comprise
of 50 scripts from different sectors. NIFTY - NATIONAL FIFTY is an
"index". What is an index? An index is basically an indicator. It gives you
a general idea about whether most of the stocks have gone up or most
of the stocks have gone down. The Nifty is an indicator of all the major
companies of the NSE.

 BSE Stand for Bombay Stock Exchange. It is India's Oldest Stock

Exchange with listing of over 4000 scripts with it. This not fully
automated yet but progress towards full automation is underway.
SENSEX is major index of BSE and it comprise of 30 scripts from
different sectors.SENSEX - SENSITIVITY INDEX :An abbreviation of the
Bombay Exchange Sensitive Index (Sensex) - the benchmark index of
the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

MCX & NCDEX

 Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX): is an independent commodity
exchange based in India. It was established in 2003 and is based in
Mumbai. It has an average daily turnover of around US$1.55 billion.

 National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange Limited (NCDEX): is an online

commodity exchange based in India. It was incorporated as a private
P a g e | 37

limited company incorporated on April 23, 2003 under the Companies Act,
1956.

MCX SX
 MCX Stock Exchange (MCX-SX) is an India-wide electronic platform for
trading in currency futures under the regulatory control of Securities and
Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and Reserve Bank of India (RBI). It is
jointly promoted by Financial technologies and MCX. It started
operations on the 6th of October 2008 .

FUTURES AND OPTIONS

FUTURES
Futures trading is different from investing in the stock market or bonds since
you don’t actually own anything. In futures trading, you are speculating on
the future direction of the price in the commodity you are trading. This is
different for beginners in futures trading; it is like a bet on the future price
direction. The terms "buy" and "sell" merely indicate the direction you
expect future prices will take. He or she must only deposit sufficient capital
with a brokerage firm to insure that he will be able to pay the losses if his
trades lose money.

Futures trading is a sort of insurance plan for those who are trading and
investing.A farmer may sell futures on his wheat crop if he thinks the price
will go down before the harvest; conversely, a bread manufacturer may buy
futures if they think the price of wheat is going to rise before the harvest.
Regardless of the price movement, both are guaranteed their price. The final
P a g e | 38

component of the equation is the investor in futures trading who looks for
changes in the futures markets and seeks to gain advantages by buying or
selling at a profit.

OPTIONS
The power of options lies in their versatility. They enable you to adapt or
adjust your position according to any situation that arises. Options can be as
speculative or as conservative as you want. This means you can do
everything from protecting a position from a decline to outright betting on
the movement of a market or index. The two types of options are calls and
puts:
A call gives the holder the right to buy an asset at a certain price within a
specific period of time. Calls are similar to having a long position on a stock.
Buyers of calls hope that the stock will increase substantially before the
option expires.

A put gives the holder the right to sell an asset at a certain price within a
specific period of time. Puts are very similar to having a short position on a
stock. Buyers of puts hope that the price of the stock will fall before the
option expires.

days, and plus three days.

WHAT IS KYC
P a g e | 41

 Know your clients (KYC) is the due diligence and bank regulation that
financial institutions and other regulated companies must perform to
identify their clients and ascertain relevant information pertinent to
doing financial business with them. KYC is typically a policy
implemented to conform to a customer identification program
mandated under the Bank Secrecy Act . Know your customer policies
are becoming increasingly important globally to prevent identity theft
fraud, money laundering and terrorist financing. In a simple form these
rules may equate to answering twelve questions, but this is the tip of
the iceberg and regulators now expect much more.

 One aspect of KYC checking is to verify that the customer is not on any
list of known fraudsters, terrorists or money launderers.

 Beyond name matching, a key aspect of KYC controls is to monitor

transactions of a customer against their recorded profile, history on the
customers account(s) and with peers.

 Know Your Customer processes are also employed by regular

companies of all sizes, for the purpose of ensuring their proposed
agents', consultants' or distributors' anti-bribery compliance. Banks,
insurers and export credit agencies are increasingly demanding that
customers provide detailed anti-corruption due diligence information,
to verify their probity and integrity.

WHAT IS BACK OFFICE?

 Refers to systems that do not deal directly with the customer such as
inventory management and accounts payable. Administration and
P a g e | 42

support personnel in a financial services company. They carry out

functions like settlements, clearances, record maintenance, regulatory
compliance, and accounting. When order processing is slow due to high
volume, it is commonly referred to as "back office crunch."

WHAT IS DEMAT A/C?

 Demat refers to a dematerialised account.

 Just as you have to open an account with a bank if you want to save your
money, make cheque payments etc, you need to open a demat account if
you want to buy or sell stocks.

 So it is just like a bank account where actual money is replaced by shares.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN

DEPOSITORY AND DEPOSITORY
PARTICIPANT?
 A depository is a place where the stocks of investors are held in
electronic form.

 The depository has agents who are called depository participants (DPs).
P a g e | 43

 Think of it like a bank. The head office where all the technology rests
and details of all accounts held is like the depository. And the DPs are
the branches that cater to individuals.

 There are only two depositories in India -- the National Securities

Depository Ltd (NSDL) and the Central Depository Services Ltd (CDSL)

WHAT IS CDSL & NSDL?

 NSDL, the first and largest depository in India, established in August 1996
and promoted by institutions of national stature responsible for economic
development of the country has since established a national
infrastructure of international standards that handles most of the
securities held and settled in dematerialized form in the Indian capital
market.

 CDSL commenced it’s operations during February 1999.CDSL was

promoted by Bank of Baroda, Bank of India, State Bank of India, HDFC
Bank in association with Stock Exchange Mumbai.

RTGS &NEFT
 Registration and activation of payout of funds through RTGS
/NEFT is subject to receipt of copy of cancelled cheque from
client.
P a g e | 52

.1. What is RTGS System?

 Ans The acronym "RTGS" stands for Real Time Gross
Settlement. RTGS system is a funds transfer mechanism where
transfer of money takes place from one bank to another on a
"real time" and on "gross" basis. This is the fastest possible
money transfer system through the banking channel.
Settlement in "real time" means payment transaction is not
subjected to any waiting period. The transactions are settled as
soon as they are processed. "Gross settlement" means the
transaction is settled on one to one basis without bunching
with any other transaction. Considering that money transfer
takes place in the books of the Reserve Bank of India, the
payment is taken as final and irrevocable.

 Q.2. How RTGS is different from

National Electronics Funds Transfer
System (NEFT)?
Ans NEFT is also an electronic fund transfer system that operate on a
deferred net settlement (DNS) basis which settles transactions in
batches. In DNS, the settlement takes place at a particular point of
time. All transactions are held up till that time. For example, NEFT

settlement takes place 6 times a day during the week days (9.30 am,
10.30 am, 12.00 noon. 1.00 pm, 3.00 pm and 4.00 pm) and 3 times
during Saturdays (9.30 am, 10.30 am and 12.00 noon). Any
transaction initiated after a designated settlement time would have
to wait till the next designated settlement time. Contrary to this, in
RTGS, transactions are processed continuously throughout the RTGS
business hours (9.00 am to 4.30 pm on week days and 9.00am to
12.00 noon on Saturday).
