Starting Torque of Fan

The document discusses the starting torque requirements of motors used to drive fans. It defines starting torque as the measure of energy required to start the rotation of a body about a fixed axis, where forces act. When a motor starts, it produces a starting torque that is typically 1.5 to 2.5 times the full load torque to overcome friction and get the fan up to operating speed. Formulas are provided to calculate the starting torque required based on the total moment of inertia of the rotating components and the angular acceleration needed during startup. Guidelines for typical motor starting times are also listed based on the number of motor poles.

STARTING TORQUE OF FAN

Torque, also known as the moment of force,

is a measure of energy require to start the
running ability of a body that rotates about
a fixed axis in which the forces acts. When
the motor starts, it has a relatively high
torque, usually 1.5 to 2.5 times of the full
load torque depending upon which type
of machine being driven because of
frequency of start, temperature, type and
amount of lubricant, etc. and such variables
should be taken into account. During the
starting period, the torque first drops slightly n0 = synchronous speed
to the minimum torque, then rises to the n1 = speed at rated power
maximum torque, after which its drop again Fig. 51 Torque and speed charateristic
as shown in Fig.51 of motor

Starting Torque Equation

It is therefore necessary to calculate the starting torque of the fan, it enable us to determine
if the selected motor is able to produce enough torque to drive the fan from standstill to
operating speed without exceeding its design limits.

Starting Torque, Ts = J x α / g Kgm

where :
J = total moment of inertia, kgm2
α = angular acceleration , rad/s2
g = gravity acceleration (9.81 m/s2)

Starting Time Of Motor

The starting time of an induction motor is the most critical factor, an excessively long
starting period causes a harmful temperature rise in the motor. There is no standard
starting time for us to follow, it varies with different manufacturers, structures, frame sizes,
poles and cost of the motor.

Following table shows the guidelines for motor starting time. For actual starting time,
please consult the motor supplier when installing the fan complete with motor.
