Sample Problems:
1. A single phase generator has a synchronous impedance of 0.3 + j2.8 ohms. It is supplying 450 A
to a load at 24 kV and 0.75 pf lagging. Find the percent voltage regulation at above condition.
2. A 25 kVA, 440V, wye connected, 3 phase generator has a synchronous impedance of 0.5 + j1.6
ohms per phase. Calculate the power angle in electrical degrees at full load, 440V and unity
power factor.
3. A 200 kVA, 2.4 kV, wye connected, 3 phase alternator has a synchronous impedance of 0.7 +
j8.82 percent based on its ratings. Find the percent voltage regulation at full load, 2.4 kV and 0.8
pf lagging.
4. A wye connected, 3 phase generator has a synchronous impedance of 0.2 + j2.54 ohms per
phase. It delivers 48 A at 0.8 leading to a 3 phase load. If its no-load emf is 1.469 kV per phase,
find the terminal line to line voltage.
5. A 10kVA, 230 V, wye connected, 3 phase generator has synchronous impedance of 0.5 + j1.2
ohms per phase. What must be the power factor of the load so that the voltage regulation at full
load and 230 V is zero?
6. A 2.5 MVA, 13.2kV, wye connected 3 phase alternator has synchronous impedance of 0.5 + j6.3
ohms per phase. The alternator supplies a 3 phase load at 7,621<0 volts per phase. If the no load
voltage is 13,331 <34.7 volts line to line, find the armature current in amperes.
7. A 3 phase, wye connected generator has a power angle of 15.4 degrees and synchronous
impedance of 0.5 + j10 ohms per phase while delivering 300A to its 3 phase load at a lagging
power factor and 13.2kV line to line. Find the no load emf in volts, line to line.
8. A 1.5 MVA, 2.3kV, 60Hz, 3 phase, wye-connected generator has a synchronous impedance of
0.06 + j1 ohms per phase. Field current is 60 A at 125 V DC. Find the percent efficiency of the
alternator at full load, 2.3kV and 0.9 pf lagging at the above condition. The core and friction
losses are 25kW and 18kW, respectively.
9. A 1MVA, 2.3 kV, 60Hz, 10 pole, 3 phase delta connected generator has a synchronous
impedance of 0.42 + j0.67 ohms per phase. Field current is 60A at 125VDC. The core and friction
losses at rated load, 2.3kV and unity pf are 21.5kW and 17.5kW, respectively. Find the no-load
emf of the generator, line to line in volts.
10. Find the efficiency of the generator at rated load 2.3kV, unity pf of problem #9
11. A 10MVA, 6.9kV, 14 poles, 3 phase, wye connected generator has synchronous impedance of
0.06 + j1.76 ohms per phase. Its no-load voltage per phase is 5,055V, terminal voltage per phase
is 3,983V and power angle is 13 degrees. Find the output MW of the generator.
