CHAPTER 1

THE BIRTH OF RIZAL

 Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda = Full name of Jose P. Rizal

 Born on Wednesday night, June 19, 1861 near the Lake Shore of Calamba, Laguna.

 Baptized three days later in the Catholic church of the same town.

 he was the 7th of the eleven children of Francisco Mercado Rizal and Teodora Alonso
Realonda
 Rizal recounted that the day of his birth was a Wednesday between eleven o’clock and
midnight.
 St. Joseph- patron saint of laborers and soldiers.
 Protacio- second first name of Rizal

RIZAL’S PARENTS
Francisco Mercado
• Rizal’s father was born in Binan, Laguna on May 11, 1818.
• At the age of eight he lost his father and grew up into manhood under care of his
mother.
• Well- educated in terms of what was the standard in those days.
• Studied Latin and Philosophy at the College of San Jose in Manila.
• After his parent’s death, he had already moved to Calamba where he became a tenant-
farmer of the Dominican-owned hacienda.
• He was described as a silent but industrious and independent man.
• Died with the old age at 80.
• The Spanish term “Mercado” means MARKET a name adopted by his paternal great
great grandfather, who was a full blooded Chinese and who likewise married a Chinese
girl.

Teodora Alonso Realonda


• younger by 8 years than her husband
• Born in Manila on November 8, 1826.
• studied at the College of Santa Rosa
• Described as an intelligent, cultured and likewise a woman of strong character.
• She did not only speak Spanish fluently but was also a Mathematician.
• She was a “REMARKABLE WOMAN”.
• Descended from the royalty or from Lakandula, the last native king of Tondo.
• Her great grandfather was of Japanese ancestry married a Filipina named Benigna and
whose daughter married a Filipino-Chinese lawyer from Pangasinan. The couple had a
daughter by the name of Brigida who married Lorenzo Alberto Alonso, a prominent
Spanish-Filipino mestizo from Binan. Teodora Alonso, Rizal’s mother was their daughter.

The Rizal Children


Eleven children: nine girls and two boys

1. Saturnina (1850-1913)

• the oldest of the Rizal children


• Her nicknamed was Neneng.
• Studied in La Concordia College at Santa Ana.
• Married to Manuel T. Hidalgo from Tanauan, Batangas.

2. Paciano (1851-1930)

• Older brother of Rizal


• Acted like a second father to Jose
• Enraged and angered over the Gom-Bur-Za execution.
• Joined the Philippine Revolution after his brother’s death as a general
• Retired as a farmer in his place in Los Banos.
• Survived by the two children of his mistress.
• He never married and died as a bachelor at the age of 79.

3. Narcisa (1852-1939)

• She was the second girl in the family and was nicknamed as Sisa.
• She married Antonio Lopez , a school teacher in Morong.

4. Olympia (1855-1887)

• She was the third girl and Ypia was her pet name.
• She married Silvestre Ubaldo, a telegraph operator from Manila.

5. Lucia (1857-1919)

• She was the fourth girl


• She married Mariano Herbosa who died of cholera in 1889. Mariano Herbosa was
denied a Christian burial because he was Rizal’s brother-in-law.

6. Maria (1859-1945)
• Biang was her nickname.
• She married Daniel Cruz from Binan.

7. Jose (1861-1896)

• The hero was nicknamed Pepe.


• It is known that he lived with Josephine Bracken an Irish girl from Hong Kong and who
bore him a son who died a few hours after birth.

8. Concepcion (1862-1865)

• Her pet name was Concha.


• Died in sickness when she was only 3 years old.
• Her death was mourned greatly by her family, especially Jose.
• He described the death of Concepcion as his first sorrow.

9. Josefa (1865-1945)

• She had a unique nickname. She was called Panggoy and died as an old maid at the age
of 80.

10. Trinidad (1868-1951)

• Trining was her pet name and like Josefa she never married and died at the age of 83.

11. Soledad (1870-1919)

• She had a pet name Choleng.


• She married Pantaleon Quintero from Calamba

 Rizal in his infancy was sickly, frail and small for his age.
 He was given the tenders care by his parents.
 one of the happiest events in Rizal’s early childhood was the journey with his father to
Antipolo on June 6, 1868 in order to fulfil his mother’s religious vow which was made on
his birth, who at that time of this trip. Had given another birth, his sister Trinidad
 He was very thrilled with the riding in a barge in the Pasig River.
 From Antipolo they went to Manila to visit Saturnina who was then studying at La
Concordia in Santa Ana.
 He experienced his first sorrow when his sister Concha died in 1865.
 He cried bitterly over the loss of a sister who was then only three years old.
 Rizal manifested artistic talents and at the age of five began to draw sceneries, objects
and people using pencil.
 Later he would mould in clay, objects that caught his interest and fantasy.
 Rizal also showed the potentials of a scientist. He loved nature.
 A poet and an artist at heart, it was easy for him to see beautiful things and to admire
them.
