Research Methodology: Diana Vanegas

This document outlines the goals, learning outcomes, format, lecture series, recommended reading, and evaluation of a research methodology course. The course was originally designed to provide methodological elements for engineering involvement in research and development but has been expanded to also cover the different options for senior projects. By completing the course, students should be able to understand the different project modalities, make an informed decision about their own project, and develop their project idea in a standardized written format. The course will include lectures, discussions, activities, homework, and peer reviews. Evaluation will be based 50% on homework and assignments and 50% on a class project.

Department of Food Engineering

College of Engineering
Universidad del Valle
Our Goal
This course was originally
designed to:
“Provide methodological elements useful for
engineering involvement in the areas of research,
development, manufacture and quality”.

2
Our Goal
We need to expand to:
“Provide methodological elements useful for engineering
involvement in the different modalities for the senior project (i.e.
Trabajo de Grado)”.

1. Research thesis
2. Monograph
3. Entrepreneurship project
4. Industry internship

3
Original Learning Outcomes

By the completion of this course you should

be able to:
 Access the available academic databases and efficiently
find technical literature
 Design experiments to answer scientific questions or
address problem statements
 Use statistical tools to analyze experimental results
 Plan and conduct studies for improving processes and
products

4
Updated Learning Outcomes

By the completion of this course you should be able to:

1. Have a good understanding of each of the different options to conduct your

senior project and what is expected from you in any case.
2. Make an informed desision regarding the modality for your project.
3. Know the what, why, how, and hwo of your specific project.
4. Develop your idea in a standardized writen format.

5
Format

This course will include lectures, team discussions, in-class

activities, homeworks and two peer-review excercies. In
order to do well in this class, it is essential to prepare for
class by reading assigned materials, to work on homework
and short assignments, to have active attendance, and to
participate in class discussions and activities.

I’ll try to bring as many guest speakers as possible

6
Lecture Series by the instructor

 What is the motivation behind your work?: Understanding the “big picture”
 Finding the right literature: Don´t go down the rabbit hole
 Background and gaps in the knowledge: what is nobel about your project?
 Writing tips and self editing
 The scientific method and the engineering design process
 Objectives and hypothesis
 Methodology
 Expected outcomes

I’ll invite at least two guest speakers to talk about entrepeneurship and industry internships

Recommended Reading

Due to the multi-disciplinary nature of the course material,

text and supporting information will be provided by the
Instructor and will be taken from numerous textbooks and
current journal articles (journal articles will be selected by
the instructor). Information from textbooks will be provided
by the instructor in the form of electronic files.

Course Evaluation
How about this?

 Homework and in-class assignments 50%

 Class Project 50%
